Nothing is more effective than a well-timed e-celeb video essay + fanart spam for a game's success. Every single non-slop game that succeeded in the past few years can attribute its success to these factors. But good luck getting those.

just look at this photo, there is so much to it. even between the two of them

>she's in some dingy bedroom, a hand-me-down headset, early 2010s 720p webcam

also did they ever explain why they did this really weird Q&A in the first place?
You know how delusional people like to imagine themselves going on talk shows or joe rogan? It looks like sasquatch was suffering from this delusion, wrote down a fan-fiction interview, and demanded that his wife play along.

never understood how to learn from a finished project (beyond mabe structuring the same for a new project).

say i make all my code similar to it, then my project just ends up looking like an edited version of the template, in which case i may as well use the template. at least that would be more "honest".

i don't get blows new game. so you push objects around to solve puzzles? that's it?
>>
>>550745703
i'd still have to code for probably a year on top of it, but the foundation for all the major systems are 90%~ right there in the template, and it has its own conventions built to be built upon, think like
>[TEMPLATE] object
>[TEMPLATE] attribute
etc.
so a lot of what i'd make would be within scope of, and become part of, the template in a way.
>>550745970

It's called getting older. When you were young, social connections happen naturally though school. In adulthood there is nothing forcing you to see or interact with people.
You need to prioritize planning times to meet friends, and work to maintain those connection. Unironically I suggest scheduling reminders to text specific people once a week. Even better is to schedule regular activities with them, like working out twice a week, or going to a movie once a month.

i just realized why i have 100s of game ideas yet nothing works. it's because i'm a programmer and not an artist. when i think about the programming part i can evaluate how much work it takes, what is possible, what i can do. but for the art, i can't. i can come up with ideas but i cannot make any judgements about the quality of the idea. if i'd have a background in art i could evaluate what type of assets/styles i can make and which ones i can't. this is what actually makes ideas work, when you can validate that you can actually make them. and i can't do that if i don't have art skills.

Working on a new feature, one suggested by a player. Applying "stickers" to dice faces that effect the roll or do things when that face is used.

I plan to put these in the "Cage" section of the shop screen, which is obsolete. These will also take the place of the dice bag feature (Not popular with players), but the different dice combos and flavors will stay.

Feels good to be working on a feature again, but this has added a good amount of complexity to my dice logic.
>>
>>550763168
A true artist isn't going to be that pragmatic. You're still thinking like a programmer.
The good stuff is born when you have both an artist (someone with a vision) and a programmer (someone actually in touch with reality) having a back-and-forth battle with technical limitations where the programmer forces the artist to make compromises and the artist pushes the programmer to push technical limits in order to get closer to the artists' vision.
>>
>>550763520

>>550742936
>>

Well, you can still evaluate your capabilities. You're doing it right now
>>
>>550763618
i more and more feel like i shouldn't even be the idea guy, but the one making stuff work.
>>
>>550763168
What you mean to say is that you're not a designer. Design requires that you have a reasonable understanding of the design space, which for the design of a video game, includes needing to know all the technical limitations and requirements for visual assets.

Friendly reminder that game design is the hardest part of game development.
>>
>>550763618
I actually think it's the opposite. It must be a relationship where you respect the others labor, making the work easier for each other. I can't stand seeing developers put so much unnecessary work into stuff
>>
>>550763734
And there's no shame in that, if you feel your place is in the programming department and you're good at it, then start applying for jobs at a game studio. If you find a decently small indie studio you'll still get to throw in your own ideas and you're almost guaranteed to have at least some when you're trying to work around technical limitations to make something work.
Carmack for instance was purely a programmer, through and through. Not a single story or gameplay idea in his head. But he would have never managed to make Doom without Id Software as a whole. If it weren't for Romero and Hall with the necessary expertise in the other fields of game design, there wouldn't be a game, and Carmack would have been stuck working on financing software for the rest of his life, even though he enjoyed videogames and wanted to work on them.
>>550764027
Yeah, that's a better way to put it. I didn't mean it like the programmer and artist telling each other to stop, but the programmer gives 110% for the artist so he doesn't have to dial back his vision as much for the technical limitations.
>>
>>550763923
>hardest
bruh i know artists who get a mental breakdown when they have to install a browser
>>
>>550763734
Not everyone is cut out to be an indie (independent) solo video game developer who are small business owners and need to make all these kinds of decisions for themselves. If you have the skills, you should go be an employee at a larger studio.

This is false. For starters, Unity is a problem for which there is no solution.

You know, it’s funny, because eventually we’re going to reach a point (I’d argue we are almost already there) where you won’t even be able to find developers knowledgeable enough to maintain engines like Unity.

Retards like you will just start using Unity to try and make new versions of Unity. It will be a rather shitty future for technology as software incompetence will erase any gains in hardware performance.

I disagree. It was relatively easy to put together the backbone of my game. I say backbone instead of engine because it’s not a general purpose editor like unity. But if I wanted to I could take the majority of the components I built and use them for another game.

The only truly difficult part was learning how to program shaders since I had no knowledge about that starting out.

I'm not going to study physics to understand on an expert level how light and sound work when I could be working on my fucking game instead, I will gladly use whatever the fuck the people who actually know and care about that stuff put together for me to use in Unity/Godot regardless of how poorly optimized it might be. The fact is that I could probably develop several full games in the time it took me to learn on a level necessary to code my own implementation of a sound/physics engine that's more optimized and accurate to life than what already exists.

"Making components for future games" is a nodev fantasy. It sounds good on paper, but doesn't happen in practice because there's always potential for improvement through refactoring. It's very rare that a structure will port over cleanly in its entirety. Even if you can do it, it's usually not worth it because with the extra time spent adding too many mostly unnecessary future-proof interfaces results, you could've just rewritten the whole thing better because it's specifically designed for the current game at hand.

Graphics is hard because there is so much complexity per-platform that doesn’t need to be there but it is. Ironically I would say that’s what’s great about Unity because it tries to unite different standards in a universal way, but in my opinion it does it in poor taste. I prefer how SDL does everything (but you still have to program your own graphics, fucking gay)
>>
>>550777250
>"Making components for future games" is a nodev fantasy.
What lol
That is literally industry standard. Not just in games but in all kinds of software. Even indie devs are prone to copy and pasting things that worked from their previous project even if they don’t know why they worked.
>>
>>550777370

You're copy-and-pasting, and then modifying and hacking at it. It's not going to be a perfectly clean and portable module/library like you're imagining. It's going to be a mess and you're going to need to refactor bits. That's the industry standard.

Yeah that's the point. Of course things will have to change from game to game, hopefully for the better. The big win is changing and improving will be less work and time than rewriting, else you've failed to make reusable things.
If you want a more modern example, look at Naughty Dog's GOAL engine.

I do think amateur devs refactor too much.
Sometimes you have to accept less than perfect code and ship.
It's a problem with amateur devs because they don't have the deadline panic a studio will have of needing to ship to keep the lights on. Sitting alone in your room makes you complacent with devving forever.

How are your games doing, anons?

I've just released my own game engine. You can believe me when I say that it's the best tool on the market for building UI-heavy games(whether it's twine-like text games, VN, or RPGs). And of course it's absolutely free to use so give it a try.

There are two main philosophies it follows:

Easy to use: You don’t need to install anything or write a single line of code. Just use the Editor’s forms to create your own game or modify existing ones. The engine already handles all the basics you’d expect from an RPG: characters and party, items and inventories, VN-style scenes and branching events, quests, gallery, skill trees, crafting, and more.

Built to be extended: If you do want to go deeper, it’s designed so you can plug in your own custom UI and systems with a bit of Javascript, without fighting the engine or rewriting everything from scratch.

So, you don't have any more excuses not to make your dream game.

How to access Dryad Engine
Download the engine here(windows or linux version): https://mega.nz/folder/cRUjSZLD#m55VFuI-7q138TZZYGtbuQ
Extract the zip file and run 'dryad-engine' executable. It already includes the Tutorial game.
[Optional]Lewd Mod :
To access spicy animated scenes with Riko, download the lewd mod here: https://mega.nz/file/MEUgFBjA#Ud76Auk0Aj98C9AsFHFfxzoImDM3gDDYhEdtg_XOeGw
Do NOT extract the .zip. Instead put it inside [path/to/engine]/assets/install. Then in the engine main menu press the 'Install' button in the top left corner and choose the mod to install. When starting a new game, make sure to check in the lewd mod before pressing the play button.

well, C is too hardcore for my small brain and it also feels like focusing on graphics and competing with Unity and Unreal which I'm not even thinking about. because
1) it's much better at the job and comes with powerful data-driven architecture and not shitcode your average dev produces working in Renpy or Unity. You use forms instead to manage your data.
2) it comes with already prebuilt systems like characters and party, items and inventories, VN-style scenes and branching events, quests, gallery, skill trees, crafting, and more. (that are also extendable) so you don't waste your time on writing tons of boilerplate code.

>It works
Hell yeah bros.

Got the sticker system working, now you can apply small modifiers or effects to specific dice faces. This has various effects, from changing the number rolled, to giving gold.
I especially like how the sticker stays in it's place on the dice roll. I have some animations to polish up, but overall I'm really happy with the system.
I know it's not the most unique feature, but I think it will go over players better then the dice bag, which no one buys.

In other news, I've gotten some great motivation from players recently, which is feeling great. I've got the next 10 days off from work as well, so I can really get stuff working well for DD66.

This is the kind of meme trash that will be forgotten in a year. The indie scene is an insult to video games as a medium.
>>
>Recent research on visual style and player experience suggests that what matters most is how well a visual style fits the game’s narrative and emotional goals, rather than simply realism. Some game developers' takes explicitly tackle the effects of art style on video game narrative and perception, pointing out that art style greatly influences mood and player experience.

And yet I am not sure about keeping the new one. It's cut down by half, yet a few parts are no longer easy to read as I had to make certain variable's generic sounding. Couldn't make it sound like it belonged to one thing or the other. It kinda makes sense but requires a bit more thinking. I'm not really sure about using it, it's a smaller script but it loses ease of readability. I spent maybe an hour or two on this, idk.

Thank you anon, by the way, I am almost 100% sure that negative review comes from reddit because I tried to post there a few hours ago to share my game and what I get? someone immediately making stuff up: "Your slider for sfx are not working", sure... then I got that negative review a few minutes later. Does anybody here remember when I launched my first game Fiend Heart and got mixed reviews? well, at that time, I made the same mistake of sharing my game on reddit and when I did that, I noticed how suddenly I started to get negative reviews, which dropped the game reviews to a mixed 55%, and now, without the influence of that God-forsaken place, it's sitting at 72%

Seriously, in all this years working in my projects, I always read that advice of "posting in Reddit", and everytime I tried it's just a painful experience only comparable to someone hammering a nail into one of my testicles. I never got something positive out of that site when marketing a game and I am not trying anymore over there.

I spoke to a guy a while back who decided to quit gaming entirely because nobody made games in the genre he liked (realistic stealth games like splinter cell). He was a retard though because he refused to try indie games since he didn't like their graphics but that's beside the point.
It got me thinking just how many people like that are there, who might also be willing to try indies but are not because nobody makes them in the genre they want.
The rougelike/friendslop market contraction won't last, eventually it will get too saturated and/or audience tastes will change. But by that point, too many genres will have been pushed out of "viability" and too much of the audience will be lost.
Is this what Gaben wanted?

Twitter, Tiktok, Instagram and YoutubeShorts are the ones that work, I read that posting on Bilili (chinese youtube) can work but I don't know that language so I not trying for now.

Other options to gain wishlist are:

- making a demo for steam.
- participate with the demo on festivals.
- convince a streamer to play your demo.
- steam next fest, but next fest should be the last thing you do in your marketing campaign.

beautifully made, complex systems, sandboxy

i guess it comes down to the fantasy? not many people want to lead a colony of asexual blue guys based on finnish mythology? im sure the game is fun to play...
>>
>>550819598
it seems like the dev was following a city builder tutorial and then swapped out the generic villagers for generic goblins and thought that'd be enough.
But he doesn't realize the goblins clash with the generic fantasy and the whole thing turns people off.
He needed custom art that actually fit goblin aesthetics.

balatro but its chess. every round you have to win the chess match but you can only take your surviving pawns into the next round. between round you can open chests with random chess pieces. also the enemy gets increasingly stronger combination of pieces.

Tfw as Ive devved longer and longer that I now can see where devs cut corners.
>game I enjoyed for a long time
>notice quality drop off further into the game
Originally written off as weird design choice but now I'm sure they were sick of working on the game or were pressed for time or noticed they were getting stuck devving to long and just rushed certain content out asap. No beautifully done map for one area. Questionable decision on the unlocks for certain things. And iirc the story just feeling rushed later on compared to early on.

>>550820274
yeah it's a little sad to see it's not received very well. Game design, programming and art seem all high quality. Maybe it's thematically too sterile. needs some carnal fantasy fulfillment like kidnapping humans, defending the colony from orcs, raiding etc. I want to avoid its mistakes, it's tragic to see a labor of love get not appreciated

Had the idea to set up a blend file so I could roughly line up meshes and curves and still get a nice single map mesh with no gaps and consistent sizes easily without needing to stick to a grid. Left is the export, pretty good other than a bit of wonky shit where stairs will go. But god damn though, there's a lot of geometry nodes now.

No, I was alludong to the fact some people can't be ripped off of games they've permanently attached themselves to. I think this genre might be one of them, the kinda genre where people eack up thousands on a single game or so I think. Void War, despite all the hubbub, didn't do as great as the noise suggested. It still sold well just not as greatly as it seemed it would have. I think with FTL many of the fans are just bent on never letting go off it. Might be the same logic with 4x, citybuilders, basically anything with huge time investments, maybe even any niches where the first game was so well done that it's got an iron grip on the playerbase

social needs are more important than success. actually ambitions can ruin your social relationships and make you extremely lonely. loneliness hurts and leads to depression, meaning you'll get done less and feel way less motivated to do anything.
would you rather talk to somebody who has time for you and listens or to someone who's obsessed with their ambitions and doesn't ever "have time" and never really cares about what you have to say?
if anything, this thread helps you to cope with loneliness. no, going hermit will not make you more productive, it'll make you even more depressed.

How long do you think thr current indie slop market has left? Sentiments like picrel are starting to become more and more frequent. For now, they're still mostly fringe, but it's still rising even among normalfags. The problem is that I don't think the market will recover. Too many passion project devs have either been driven out economically or socially who won't be there anymore to fill the void and thus rebuild consumer trust.

Not gonna happen. It's been shown to be too profitable in the past for people to stop trying. Just like Bitcoin will never drop below 10k again, since it went to below 10k and then to 100k people will always use that as a reference and buy it long before it gets to that point.
You can thank Toby Fox, Notch and all other indie devs who became millionaires for now pulling the ladder after them.

But the market is systemically built to disadvantage said projects. I doubt they all have the same hype pull like Silksong did. And if they all will also bomb, then those devs will also leave. Which hardly leaves anybody.

>>550824384
I don't agree. Even in this thread we see massive shilling of "stop making passion projects and make disposable small scale slop games!". More and more devs are waking up to this, it's why all the industry vets are making slop too, like the Timesplitters guys who are makng some basic word game or some shit. Most devs will either give up, correctly assuming they won't be rewarded for their efforts, or give in and make slop while it's still hot. And once the slop market crumbles, there won't be anyone to fill the void. Legitimately delusional devs might survive but the problem is that their games are also too detached from general tastes and too niche, and thus they won't get the disgruntled audience.

As someone with industry experience, you'll quickly find most of the people in the industry are either trans linux programmers or blue hair feminist 3d modelers etc.
the vast majority of people who actually make a career out of gaming are well educated city folk with degrees, you can't just show up and throw a tantrum when you realize half your coworkers are libs or your project will crash and burn and you will never get hired again

Okay let me give you a different counter-argument.
I am working on a passion project, so for me it would be IDEAL for the market to crash under the weight of endless slop before I release my game, because everyone will flock to my game after seeing the love and passion poured into it, journalists will have headlines with "indie games are still alive!" and so on.
BUT, the universe is against me so this will NEVER happen.
I rest my case.

>LOD
>chunking
it's completely useless to have lod and it's completely useless to have chunking if your map is finite / small enough to fit in memory and vertex buffers only offer you extra bloat data. your entire tilemap doesn't need more than 6 vertices to form a single large quad, but you have a quad per tile and probably a couple of millions of tiles total, see the issue? the way to do it properly is to represent your tilemap on the cpu as an unsigned integer array and 16 bits is likely plenty enough as it gives you 65535 different tile types and on the gpu side of thing this can just be represented as an integer texture which you use for lookup and then you do all the actual drawing in a fragment shader. no need for chunking, no need for lod, use the hardware like it was intended.

The /agdg/ general must purge fascist rhetoric: it's not censorship, it is a restoration of its intellectual space. This denazification is a moral hygiene: removing dehumanizing symbols that corrode collaboration, rehabilitating an atmosphere where creativity and genuine dissent can breathe.

Moderation must be methodical, guided by transparent norms and consistent enforcement. Community engagement is essential; guidelines should be collaboratively calibrated and paired with education on why such content harms.

Use a proportional toolkit: targeted removals, contextual warnings, and a fair appeals process. Decisions must be justified, upholding intellect over incitement.

This is a commitment to /agdg/’s future - a hub of technical excellence and ethical reflection where pluralism, trust, and humane curiosity allow artistry to thrive.
