Nasu has always liked blending fantasy with sci-fi, which makes sense since he's the sort of otaku who would have grown up being exposed to the era where the industry was making a lot of these sort of OVAs that blend scifi with magic. Even in FSN, you can already see the logic. Using magecraft is often depicted as though you're executing lines of code, of course this isn't as noticeable for western fans who had to rely on mirror moon translations who botched a bunch of ruby texts among other things.So yeah, this is really only a 'new' thing if your main exposure were the Fate anime which had to strip out a bunch of expositions and/or the mirror moon fan TL.Alien threats also aren't new. Nasu has long played with the idea of there being some far off threat from beyond earth, just that up until recently, he didn't get to focus on them. But they've always been there in the setting. Planetary Defence Excalibur isn't new either.
