None of the scouts understand what she means and they just brush the question aside. Toru is always disappointed and rejects them.Then, she meets the Producer by miracle. He realizes she has potentials and hands her his card immediately. Recognizing him as the young man from her childhood, Toru asks him the same question: Will I be able to fly? The Producer responds that if she wants to, she certainly can. Toru is pleased because it is the first time someone has given her a real answer. At the end, she decides to climb that jungle gym again, but this time as an idol with the Producer.

This news shocks Toru, as she is now certain the Producer is the same young man who helped her climb the jungle gym when she was a child.The Producer wants to understand Toru better, so he asks her to keep a journal and write down her feelings about her work. Toru, being herself, barely writes anything at all. But one day, she writes that she is going somewhere. This worries the Producer, so he runs out of the office to look for her. When he eventually finds her and scolds her a little, Toru subtly implies that she is upset that he forgot they had met before. Later, the Producer talks about the jungle gym again. He remembers that the boy was stuck and said he wants to climb to the top even in his dreams, so the Producer helped him. Toru is now completely certain he is the man she remembers. She says she is glad they both kept climbing because the top is finally getting closer, which leaves the Producer even more puzzled.Toru eventually wins WING, and they meet at the park again. Toru decides to come clean and tell the Producer that they have actually met before, but the Producer replies that he still has no idea what she means. Toru does not mind though, because until she is ready, she is fine with him taking his time to remember.

It feels like you are 70% certain of what she means, while the remaining 30% is left ambiguous, leaving room for endless imagination. It is very easy to self insert as the Producer because both you, the reader, and the Producer are trying to figure out what Toru means at the same time. That is a huge part of the fun of reading her story.Another thing that surprised me is how upfront Toru is about expressing her love. It has been a while since I reread both STEP and WING, and I had forgotten how blunt she can be, at least relative to how she usually behaves. I think that is mostly because there was a period between PSSR2 and PSSR6 where the writers seemed to dilute the PLove content. It felt quite bizarre for a wedding PSSR to not focus on PLove, but I digress. Anyway, WING. does an excellent job of establishing who Toru is. Perhaps talking less about the jungle gym would have tightened the story, but that is just nitpicking on my part.

The Producer tells her the instructor wasn't being serious, but Toru insists on continuing. She says that even if she doesn't understand right now, she might find an answer if she finishes all 100 laps.

It can be a bit confusing at first, but it is very rewarding once you understand what it’s trying to say about who Toru really is. The way the story uses sea life to link different elements together while using slice of life to solidify Toru’s character is beautiful. Toru lives in her own rhythm and by her own philosophy, but people often miss that she also has an ego. She cares about what she does, which is why she isn't satisfied with just breathing.Think about what happens to Toru. Every cameraman says she steals their soul, every host praises how interesting she is, and she goes viral just by wearing a tracksuit. She finds it too easy. That is why she admires the sea life. They can survive just by breathing, but she needs something more. She also looks at her classmate, who works incredibly hard yet just to be number two. She secretly admires that because he has a goal and a benchmark for hard work. Toru is looking for her own yardstick. When the instructor tells her to run 100 laps, she is actually pleased because it gives her a clear metric for effort. If she completes them, it means she is truly climbing.

At some point, she may be the one to destroy her own oasis, just like what she does right now, as she realises that the urban project will demolish the movie theatre she loves.During her internal conflict, she overhears that a fellow talent has to pay a hefty fine due to a dating scandal. This gives her an idea. Instead of simply saying yes or no to the urban project, she decides to create a scandal as a way out. She tells the Producer that some random guy is her boyfriend. While this is certainly a joke, it also reflects her desperation. She needs the Producer to help her navigate their future together, or worse, she needs to know what will happen if she eventually can’t take it anymore and “explodes”.The story ends with Toru accepting the offer. The movie theatre has been demolished, with Toru’s poster plastered all over the demolition site. Toru has changed, with a glimpse of sadness on her face. Life will go on, but can Toru do that as well? It depends on you, Producer.

But that just oversimplifies the problem. Anyway, LP is a fantastic piece to kickstart the second chapter of Toru.By the way, the movie that Toru watches is The Man Who Stole the Sun. I am not asking you to watch it. I just want to write this trivia somewhere.

This system literally only exists to kill rerolling.I'm not saying Hoyo-style gachas are objectively 100% game-ruining all the time, either. They can actually feel good IF the game provides enough freemium currency that a power player can reasonably expect to get enough to roll most of the cast comfortably (the money comes from whales who are incentivized to roll dupes, which tend to be very impactful in these games).But the single stingiest gacha I've ever played is Genshin Impact...which is a Hoyo game.
