Zukowski already talked about this, this isn't a thing that happens. He gives advice and maybe 2% of gamedevs actually follow it, but everyone else imagines that there is suddenly a thousand games released on some genre because they heard it was a hot genre and it doesn't happen. There is no great conjunction wave right now because those kind of trends never happen. Devs stick to what they are already working on and by the time they finish, the conjunction will already be over.

In the past AAA put out games in 2-3 years tops, and then a sequel (often better than the first) within 2 years. This trend of games taking 5+ years was never normal. It's ridiculous. And indies are supposed to be making games with faster turnaround it's a huge bonus to being indies and yet we have 12 year projects like Bokube who actually enjoys telling people he's been working on the game forever and has less than 1,000 wishlists.

I think more common was they taught an in-house 2d artist to make models in milkshape 3d or maya.
They got good fast because they already had good art fundamentals and the complexity of the 3d models was low in those days, most of the craft was in creating textures for them
I've literally never heard of any professional 3d artist using anim8or for anything or learning on it, but maybe it's happened.

It did. Everything pre the MV/MZ used Ruby and would have you write in custom scripts to do things outside of the base game system. Now it's moved to javascript and utilized plug-ins. Honestly, if you're working in RPG Maker to make a game, you can pick whatever version you'd prefer work in. They aren't so much strict upgrades as just flavors of engine.

Losing my mind a bit here, so I thought I would take a chance and ask the other inpatients in the madhouse.

I'm trying to get Unreal 5.4 to render the game at 4:3 with black bars on the side, somewhat like the posted picture.
This helps with rendering, but also because I think 4:3 with some side-art is a touch more immersive.
I'll be giving my players the option to play as they prefer, of course, with 16:9 and 10 being available too.

However, this little fucker REFUSES to render at a constrained 4:3 view with black bars.
-The main camera actor this is being tested against is set to 1.33 ratio with the option for 'constrain aspect ratio' set to true.
-Running the game in a standalone window, and have used the following commands with no results:
1. Set r.fullscreen mode to 2 (which should be windowed fullscreen) also tried the others (0,1) but no joy there either.
2. Ser r.SetRes to 800x600, tesed with F, FW, and W flags as well.

All roads seems to lead to a shitty stretched image at the indicated resolution, with no black bars. Found a few spots online that recommend stupider solutions like adding ui black bars over already rendered pixels or piping the camera onto a render target with it's own scaling and slap that on a UI.

I would very much like to be able to do this from inside the game, and not have players have to fiddle with monitor settings (because that just won't happen).

Anyone else wrestle with this, or have a handy solution?

That would be the solution in both Unity and Godot. You're just going to have to eat the performance hit, but the lower resolution will more than make up for it. Depending on the UE version, you should have access to SMAA, which should be enough to clean up any scaling artifacts.

Indie games are determined by how a company operates but if you guys are talking in terms of how a game feels then as someone who has played Child of Light i say it doesn't feel like an indie game, really feels like something bigger that can only come from a bigger team that's apart of an even bigger studio.

FINALLY figured this one out after beating on it like an early hominid for hours.
Turns out I had everything correctly set, it's just that Unreal, for whatever fucking arcane reason, decided to not use my main camera when the game started, despite being told explicitly to do so. Naughty engine.

Now that I've confirmed the aspect constraints are working as desired, it's just some UI work to make sure it scales correctly and adding a few buttons in the options for it.

Send me christmas cards with big fukken anime titties, and a little bit of rye whiskey if you're feeling generous.
