I think I've understood the overarching story now

The series is essentially an alchemical "Great Work" guided by GM, structured around triadic symbolism (think triquetra) and executed by three pacts (Orpheus Final Plan)
Three pacts that parallel the divine attributes of omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience and end in apotheosis for the GM

The first pact is in Sky through the Aureole, a Sept-Terrion that effectively grants omnipotence

The second pact is from Crossbell to Cold Steel

In Crossbell we get a red-herring through pleroma grass and gnosis, since they offer a false omniscience (no wisdom, only knowledge)
KeA compounds this by enforcing outcomes retroactively, simulating omniscience through control but lacking true wisdom
But then in Cold Steel, the curse (while limited) has functional omnipresence
Once the arc is over and the pact complete it explains the Grandmaster becoming more directly involved and present

The third pact, I don't think we've been introduced to directly yet so I won't speculate

This also mirrors the three alchemical principles:

Salt (body) is teased with the Salt Pale, a failed experiment as you can't reach apotheosis without the other two principles

Mercury (spirit) I believe is Professor Epstein, his impact is felt everywhere and is instrumental to everything yet he is not seen, he essentially provided the framework and interface and then became boundless

Sulfur (soul) which I also don't think has been introduced yet but pleroma/gnosis are its imitation

Aidios is essentially a grand alchemist who made Zemuria through Ars Magna but gave up after Nigredo (the collapse)
GM is her disciple/successor seeking through Albedo (Sept-Terrion removal) to complete the Work and reach Rubedo (sublimation of Zemuria)

Like Orpheus the GM seeks to lead Zemuria back from hell, but under a condition: she must not look back
If the heroes force GM to doubt and "turn back" just as Orpheus did, Zemuria will be erased by Aidios

Not him. Only Hajimari is substantially challenging, and even that only at the beginning. The others are piss easy with a few moderately challenging fights here and there.

I'll add to this that the very final fight of CS1 is a straight up level check though and completely impossible on Nightmare without an adequate level. Probably the hardest fight in CS1-CS4, yet really not all that hard as long as your level is adequate.

also, it's not 100h for every game AFAIK, more like 60h on average
there is a lot of fluff in the dialogue that you'll subconsciously speedread, especially in the later games
also don't forget /fg/ is a cesspool of nolife autists that use kiseki as a substitute for the real life, so they exhaust all NPC dialogue and 100% the games on nightmare with grinds and all that

Sky - Crossbell doing all sidequests and talking with most NPCs = 380 ish hours (200 in Sky, 180 in Crossbell).
Cold Steel (Reverie is CS5, shut up) is easily like 550+ hours.

The thing with CS is that the games are *on paper* hard but they give you so much bullshit that they're easy to break.
Daybreak is the first game I'd say is just easy no matter what.
