In practice, the deadzone, which is set around a 0 m/s closure rate, goes quite a bit further into in the negatives (so that means flying away) that it does in the positives (so flying towards the missile), so instead of trying to get in a perfect 90-degree angle and likely getting picked up after exceeding the much smaller positive deadzone boundary, you're better off going for a 91-93 degree angle, so perpendicular and very slightly away.
