The colors correspond to changes in the direction of the triangle, so you can add this texture to the triangles facing direction to figure out how to light tiny bumps on the surface to make it look like it has rocks on it and shit, while not having to add any more geometry.It's pretty cool, but you can't paint these in photoshop really. You have to have 2 models, a detailed one, and your lower poly game model, then your 3D software (Blender) can calculate out (bake) the differences between the two and put it in a texture that goes on the game model. Meaning if you want a normal map for a character, you need to model the entire character twice.This is annoying because, if you want to make a drastic change to anything you have to rebake and I cheated a little bit to make this texture using a Blender camera trick, but I still had to 3D model it first to turn it into a texture. It's a pain in the ass.
