When using checkerboard, its expected that units will just go through the gaps to the gunners or am I making the gap too large? You'd need to make him very novel like little/no magic pure melee blender, land dragon rather than flying, some kind of chimerical dragon else it's just "Here's the same lords as before but fire flavored". So I see him as more FLC and monkey as DLC if the two are competing for that. I can see that competition as Li Dao could have lore for using monkey/tigermen troops and his mechanic be some kind of a balancing act - an anti-yin-yang where they actively lose morale if in proximity to eachother.

If you want a Yuan Bo clone with a different wind og magic then you go Yin-Yin. If you want a staff user you go with Monkey King. Going by the 3 it looks like Li Dao is the most unique dragon. It is also implied that Monkey King transforms into a bigger form of monkey somehow meaning he is mechanically the same as the dragons.
