I find the most annoying thing about IX to be how superfluous the routes are, they really just feel like they were thrown in at the last minute when someone pointed out the game was too linear, the plot is also way too convenient and the enemies too stupid (I get the point is that Helman is run by corrupt and incompetent nepos, but the amount of idiocy in the helman army would make russia blush) The first time you're playing you can mostly look past that but when you're rolling through the game the 3rd time you get fed up with it.

It was the other characters actually having all the cool moments and speeches to themselves. I had the same feeling with VI, (which was even worse because Rance is shat on in that game far more times than in any other game, it's like a conga line of Rance getting humiliated going for dozens of hours) but even VI changed that up near its end. The games where Rance felt most like an actual hero and not just some shitty joke that the cast was barely putting up with were 01, 03, Sengoku, etc. In IX the cast seemed to appreciate him but he sure didn't feel like the hero.
