Thread for the discussion of game console emulation, emulators, or your experiences in a game you're emulating

Tranny Clown edition

https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Main_Page

Read the General problems FAQ before asking questions. If you still need help, post your specs (HWiNFO screenshot), OS, emulator version number and details of what's wrong.

Please contribute to the wiki if you discover any inaccuracies or have relevant information to append.

READ THE WIKI BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS LIKE:
>Where do I get games
OR
>What is the best emulator for...

Check out the wiki for the emulator you're using if you run into trouble, there may be a solution there too, often including recommendations for optimal game settings.

With pre gen 5 consoles(+ n64 and most handhelds) it's easy to just grab literally everything but when it comes to games that start taking up significant storage capacity, how selective are you guys? Do you just download 1 by 1 something you wanna play in the moment? Do you have a best of selection to go through? How do you curate your collection?
>>
Its kind of comforting that videogames went to shit in the ps3/360 era so if emulation never catches up it's not like you're missing much

>>
>>552938950
yay for when exiting the game before reaching a save point. equivalent to leaving the console on till you resume
>>
>>552942362
You have to make sure you actually save as well though. I never have because I don't really use save states but I've always heard stories of people losing theirs saves because their save states got corrupted or whatever.
But honestly a lot of emulators have making a savestate when you quit built in as a feature so its not really something you consciously do while playing anyway.
>>
Gentlemen im looking to play Fight Night Round 3 and apparently the game just mutes itself after 30 seconds after opening. im playing it through xenia, so the x360 version. Does anyone know how to fix this or should I attempt playing the ps3 version?
>>
You know the "enable deinterlacing/widescreen patches" options PCSX2 has? Every emulator should have options like that but for bloom (makes the bloom run at internal res and if the patch for that doesn't exist it looks for one that outright disables it)z all this fucking ghosting is disgusting
>>
First new thread of the new year!

What are your hopes and dreams for the emulation scene for this year?

Completely justified for games with unskippable cutscenes IMO, especially certain RPGs. I fucking wish I had them when I played Kingdom Hearts on the PS2 back in the day. There's dialogue in that game I'm certain never to forget because I kept dying on certain bosses and had to repeat a minutes-long cutscene every time.

literally unusable

What's the point of bloating the wiki with these useless "enhancement" that no one ever asked for and no serious emulator will ever accept outside of meme forks made by fatbeards.

What's next?
Power outage simulation where the emulator randomly closes without saving your progress, by design?
Counterfeit controller simulation where you need to press a button 3 times for it to register?
Mom simulation where the the emulator ask you pause the game and eat your tendies, then she takes your emulator and hide it in her room?

Most games were cover shooters or fps. The few rpg's minus demon souls were dumbed down versions of their prequels. Plus, patches and dlc become standardized during this gen.

no authentic 1986 living room ambiance pack without variable CRT flyback transformer whine , how am I supposed to immerse myself in the true nostalgic suffering? My ears aren't bleeding from 15kHz tinnitus yet, literally unplayable. And don't get me started on the rest:
Random power supply hum and capacitor aging crackle
Authentic RF interference static when "mom" walks past with the vacuum cleaner
Yellowed plastic bezel simulation with progressive browning over playtime
Controller cord tangle physics where inputs randomly drop if you "move" too far from the TV
Cigarette smoke haze overlay (optional chain-smoking aunt variant)

Next update: emulator crashes randomly to simulate power outages, complete with unsaved progress loss for that genuine childhood ragequit experience.

Yeah, but mid-7th gen (around ’09) was also the first big indie boom. XBLA/PSN/XBLIG gave us stuff like Braid, Limbo, Shadow Complex, Splosion Man etc.
>>
>>552985014
I know it’s a common take, but I think the late 7th gen is where the decline actually started. Early-to-mid 7th gen felt like a peak; after that, things slowly went downhill.
>>
>>552985359
(cont.) at least for 3D AAA games, not indies or 2D/sprite stuff. it’s also around when Flash/Shockwave stuff started dying off.
>>
>>552981101
>Most games were cover shooters or fps.
No. Most games YOU NOTICED were cover shooters or FPS. Just counting my physical PS3 games I have nearly 50 and other than two resident evil games and a front mission game, there aren't almost any shooters.
It's true that the generation started with a heavy focus on sports and shooters in the first six months, but that was followed by nearly a decade of some really peak JPRGs, action games, experimental games, and adventure games. You limited yourself to a single segment of a generation and blame it instead of your own inability to broaden your scope, but that's not on the games, that's on you being a bitch. You literally had 20 fucking years so you no longer get amicability or benefit of a doubt, you're a faggot and a piece of shit now.

This ties into the broader “slow decline” argument people have made about Western culture in general:

https://wastelandandsky.blogspot.com/2020/12/cultural-ground-zero.html

Gaming didn’t exist in a vacuum, the industry changes mirror wider cultural and economic shifts.

And blogs like hg101, videogameden, gaminghell, vgjunk, lunaticobscurity, v's recommended wiki.
And also old magazine scans which are all on retroCDN and archive.org.

There's an endless amount of resources online to find """hidden gems""" and i'm always finding something new to get excited about. I fucking love video games and emulation so much it's unreal.

Gen 7 was an absolute disaster. It was the generation that Japan was barely involved with, because the switch from SD to HD nearly destroyed them.
And we suffered as a result because the west took over and filled the gaps in the market with their cinematic story focused tripe, and licensed slop.
Christ, what a depressing era it was.

Useful for certain situations like as anon mentioned - unskippable cut scenes. Save stating past that crap is an absolute godsend.

They're also excellent to use instead of password systems.

Trouble is most people abuse them in order to get past sections of games that they don't have the skill to be able to get past. Then they complain and wonder why games were so hard back then.... because they're literally skipping the skill building process which is crucial for the enjoyment of gaming.
>>
>>552946507
I hope someone finally ads an option to dreamcast emulators that enables GD-Rom seek and CPU fan noises.
I want to hear that fan fire up when i turn on the emulator, and i want to hear that disc seek noise every time i'm about to get into a battle in skies of arcadia.

I know this shit is possible because C64/Amiga emulators have disc access noises built in, and they're absolutely kino.

>New more advanced CRT shaders.

The sooner we get out of this hell, the better - my plasma isn't going to last forever and when it dies i'm going to have to get an OLED which will actually be a massive fucking downgrade in terms of motion clarity.

Sorry, I should explain myself. I think those were the best years for gaming because 2D gaming was at its most refined. From Sonic, to SMW, to Rayman. The most effort 2D games get nowadays is in the AA department if you're lucky.

Yeah, like I said in >>552985520, I’m not talking about indies or 2D/sprite games. That’s a different discussion. I’m specifically talking about 3D AAA games (not AA). With a reasonably objective view, most people would agree that roughly 2000–2011 was the golden era for that space. Since then it’s been a slow downhill slide -> >>552986695

1996-2000 was still very strong, but mainly for platformers and pre-rendered/isometric stuff (RTS, RPGs, etc.). 3D was largely experimental at that point: devs were still figuring out camera control, movement, and basic gameplay readability in full 3D, while hardware limitations forced a lot of compromises. You got innovation, but also jank and inconsistency. The real refinement came a bit later once engines, controls, and hardware caught up.

Byuu was brilliant, but his autism hampered him in so many ways, most notably in always feeling the need to reinvent the wheel when perfectly serviceable solutions already existed. And he would commit to his new solution for maybe a couple of years before discarding it for another one. I'm not surprised, then, that ares is doing away with all the byuuware.

Where can I download the last duckstation build before the license fuckery without having to build it myself https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/commit/6d3b177714eb0c58c6b8538f0175edb95be80536
>>
>>553133368
Why would you care? The whole license thing is a joke... But anyway, must be some old roilling release somewhere down on the github... Maybe.
>>
>>553133906
I refuse to acknowledge anything that's been done afterward, in my eyes that's the final version of duckstation. It's not available on github, even github.com/duckstation/old-releases doesn't go that far back
>>
>>553134824
Then, build it yourself, that's the only solution.
>>
>>553133368
>>553134824
Good luck building it yourself. It depend on a precompiled archive that it overwritten weekly : https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation-ext-qt-minimal/releases/tag/latest because apparently using submodules is too much for his little brain. The submodules are piracy.

It's running Retroarch, if it matters.

Mesen via Retroarch is the gold standard for NES.
Underscan needs to be set up on a case by case basis for NES games coz there was no industry standard at the time.

And the best CRT shader/filter for SNES emulation?
>>
>>553169093
Some form of guest advanced or crt royale or sonkun shader. Something with ntsc composite preferably. This is of course assuming you're not using an autistic 240 hz oled in which case use one of those beam shaders. None are perfect though, remember that. Shaders are inherently a compromise.
>>
>>553169486
Fine, I'll rephrase. The most recommended all around CRT filter/shader for SNES emulation via Retroarch on the Nintendo Switch (assuming it still isn't CRT Royale). Docked of course, but the TV is the non-smart kind. 1080p but not an OLED obviously.

Any way to make the gyro pointer NOT disappear constantly in Mario Galaxy on Dolphin?
It usually works fine for a while, but then it fucks off and doesn't come back even when the controller is level. Pressing re-center also does nothing.

Only way I've got it to work is by just unbinding all the accelerometer shit and emulating the motion controls, including the pointer, but the issue with that is I need to go back and change the control scheme each time there's a level that actually uses the motion controls like the ball balancing. Also I can't waggle.
>>
>>
>>553184590
>fsr
lol, why? FSR1 sucks dick
>>
Case in point.
I need to find the pointer to enter the level, but it's fucked off again.
Rolling the controller in every possible direction you occasionally catch a glimpse of it running across the screen, but almost instantly you get the small rumble afterwards indicating galaxy thinks your wiimote is upwards and it disabled the pointer (despite the controller not actually being upwards)

Rolling the controller around long enough I'll probably find the cursor, but this is really becoming a pain in the ass.
>>
>>553188558
ok use the dlss4 one then
>>
>>553188207
>>553189424
Fixed it.
Issue was I had accelerometer influence set to 0%
Dunno why it prevented re-centering working too though.

I'm hoping hunterk's able to port mainline Mesen to libretro. I remember seeing a screenshot a few threads back, and it looks promising.
>>
>>553192345
Or rather just don't use something that only works at 1080p or bigger (well, that's DLSS, FSR1 sucks in every resolution) in a CRT shader?
>>
>>553196786
Why?
>>
>>553188558
If you’re using a CRT shader preset, you want native/internal resolution anyway.
Bilinear, frontend upscaling, or FSR1 is only useful for basic auto-box fullscreen scaling.
There’s no point in running an advanced upscaler before a CRT shader, it just messes with scanlines and masks.

SSF is excellent though and has features mednafen doesn't have like proper transparency support, and de-interlacing.
It also runs on a toaster where mednafens CPU requirements are 10 times higher.
SSF is also more accurate overall.

I still prefer Mednafen coz it has shader support but SSF is and has been excellent since about 2008. You should lurk more coz everyone was raving about mednafen saturn for years.

Trying to play Unsharted 3 on RPCS3, and I'm getting these graphical glitches randomly over the screen, I have 4090/7800x3D/32,6000mhz

Are there any decent local/offline alternatives to those web-based readers that actually have decent page-turn animations, smooth vertical/horizontal scrolling, or other immersion shit (sound effects, guided view, etc.)? Stuff like SumatraPDF, CDisplayEx, and ACBR are great for lightweight reading but they feel super basic, no real animation, no fancy transitions, just static pages. The wiki mentions web viewers do all the immersion tricks, but I'm looking for something that runs locally without needing a browser tab open 24/7.

Gee, what a wonderful update. Redream still the best as usual.
>>
>>553432854
Bro your GPU is screaming in pain from all that upscaling and internal res bullshit.
Turn it off and just slap on a CRT shader + stock FSR (with reshade or shaderglass) at native res.

Texture* upscaling with shit like xBRZ which looks like ass (pic related)
They didn't remove the ability to increase the internal res

i dont understand what the fuck are redump, no-intro, tosec, etc
>>
>>553439923
Basically verified dumps of ROMs and disc images that are known to be good, without errors and other extra shit added by scene groups.
>>
>>553439923
They're groups who make the most autistically perfect dumps of games possible then provide checksums and shit so you can verify if your dump is perfect
In the case of rom downloading sites like Myrient for example, it means the games you're downloading have the checksums provided by these groups so they're perfect dumps
Different groups specialize in different stuff. For example No-Intro is for cartridge or digital console games / DLC. Redump is for optical media (CD/DVD/Bluray games)

https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2025/06/final-fantasy-tactics-remaster-controversially-cuts-war-of-the-lions-content
Basically they remastered the original Final Fantasy Tactics PS1 game. There was a PSP remaster with added content called Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions. The Switch remaster is NOT Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions remaster.
If you want the bonus content from Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions then you gotta play the PSP version. The Switch version is fine, but I'm not going to pretend it's the best version of the game.

im on linux how can i make pcsx2 enable the pressure sensitive buttons on the ps3 controller, it says it works by default but thats a lie
>>
>>553446618
lol
you dont. that shit is outdated information
It's better to remap it instead. There's a remap option for pressure buttons, but I think you can only do one at a time? I forget, but basically you set up a % for pressure and the button you want for it.

The codes on that site used to be included in Dolphin by default when you used the "Download Gecko Codes" option but most of them were recently removed for some damn reason. I was testing all of them to see how many actually worked (most did) and i asked about these two in particular simply because despite doing the same thing one worked and the other didn't. >>553475591
Input is likely polled and blocked sometime before/after the frame rendering. So if it takes longer to render, then it will poll your input synchronously to that. It's a programming issue where ideally the input is always being polled at 60hz with your latest input regardless of how fast or slow it takes to render.
>>
>>553475591
Is this really input latency or the system just lag because putting the res too high put some strain on your system?
>>
Rcps3 gets iso support.
Good.
Compiling ppu modules takes double the amount of time of when i tested it in 2022.
How?
>>
>>553476843
Good answer, thank you!
>>553476882
It's 100% Input latency, no stuttering or FPS drops, I tried both wired and wireless and the latency is brutal but mainly on PS2/PSP UNLESS I put the scaling down to the CRT's resolution

The weird thing is, if I render let's say Gamecube at 4k internal resolution, 60 FPS, No stuttering, no input lag, it's fine

But if I render anything PS2/PSP Related at anything other than native, the input lag is really bad, even with latency fixes enabled

I'm so sorry if this is a retarded question, I'm pretty new to emulation but...

My CRT maxes out at 720p, does it even do anything to set the rendering resolution higher than that?

Thanks, sorry again for the stupid questions, still learning, in case you're wondering it's an old gaming PC hooked up to a HD-CRT From 2006.

So I'm trying to install Retro Arch on my Nintendo Switch. From what I've read I don't need a CFW just Atmosphere and RetroArch. The thing is, whenever I try to install Retro Arch onto the Switch it always fails or gets corrupted. I've tried extracting Retro Arch directly onto the SD card. I've tried extracting it first onto my PC and then moving the files to my SD card. I've tried getting rid of the bundled version, and just choosing the cores I want manually instead of all of them. No matter what, the extraction always hangs for like an hour or gets corrupted. I'm downloading from the official RetroArch site and everything, any tips on what I'm doing wrong here?

>>
>>553500810
The Ryujinx fork is hosted by a kid that only ever really did minor UI changes and cleanups. It doesn't have any real contributors working on actual emulation and has actually regressed many things compared to Ryujinx from what I remember.

Eden is being developed but it's a constant state of one or two steps forward, one step back.

It's really unfortunate what the emulation scene has become. Rather than combining their efforts into one project they would rather split off due to their ego.
It's why I stopped following emulation news after PS3. I know it's dead and it's not coming back. I just bought a PS3, 4 and Switch so I can jailbreak it. The homebrew scene isn't that much better either. But at least their all working towards one goal of jailbreaking the console.

so if i want playstation 2 and psp games for example i should get the redump dumps?
>>
>>553513697
Yes, because that's your only option. There's no such thing as a no-into dump of PS2 or PSP games because all those games are physical.
Think of it this way
redump = physical dump
no-intro = digital dump
>>
>>553436642
I thought it would be able to handle 1440p just fine but boy was I wrong.
>>
>>553513483
They're written in different languages and had completely different goals. Yuzu was a cashgrab focused on just getting things to run and be performant even if it costed something. Ryujinx focused on accuracy and correctness, and every change was carefully reviewed by the project lead and at least one other.

is there any way to fix fucked up text in FFX on the LRPS2 core when the resolution is increased? present with both dx12 and vulkan regardless of filtering settings

setting it to that parralel or whatever compute renderer fixes it, but that has other graphical glitches, seems to be limited to 2x resolution, and is way slower (also I've had crashing issues with it in a lot of games...)
>>
>>553526372
LRPS2 is a who know old version of Standalone PCSX2 with parrallelGS straped on top of it. So, try standalone PCSX2 and see if you have the same issue.
>>
>>553526372
LRPS2 is behind PCSX2 outside of official parallel-GS support
If you don't want to use parallel-GS it's generally a better idea to emulate with PCSX2 instead

>Grid-like pattern on screen
>Usually this is due to upscaling, which can cause sprites and 2D textures to misalign. Any fixes will be found in the GSdx Advanced Settings and Hacks: Settings > Graphics First try the two Round Sprite modes, Half and Full. Then try Align Sprite or Merge Sprite. Then try the Half Pixel Offset modes. If all else fails, consider using the Texture Offsets.

This should already be automatically applied though. I would backup your saves and reinstall PCSX2. Make sure you're using the latest stable that just came out or the nightly build.
