Either I don't get hurt at all or I get hit once and knocked down and killed on the ground from full health, there is no in in between with the big mutants in this fucking game.
If a knockdown attack puts me on the ground long enough that they just keep attacking me until I die it might as well have just did enough damage to kill me instantly and skipped that stupid song and dance in the first place.

Replying to the stalker in the last thread who asked about LFO and Dead Air.

>>552987940
Playing LFO now. Can think of it as an "extension" to base CS with extra maps + expanded and redecorated vanilla maps (for example, Cordon is about 50% bigger and has new buildings and points of interest). Tons of settings you can toggle on and off including weather presets which add things like frostbite, ice, aurora borealis, etc. Gun customization is a bit more deep. Shotguns are now viable. New and reworked artifacts. Enemies are insanely accurate and deadly which make some parts very unfun. It does crash a lot and the translations for new dialogue are bad. Freeplay is now available at the end of the story but the a-life is a bit one-dimensional compared to dedicated freeplay mods. Still, they put a lot of effort into this mod and it's some of the most fun I've had playing CS.

Dead air is what I would recommend to people who are looking for their first freeplay mod, or for people who want a very polished "unpack and play" freeplay experience. It has a unique flavor - you just have to try it and see for yourself. I found it to be very tasteful compared to things like Anomaly which need a bit of tweaking and addons. Highly immersive right from the start, and good for ironman runs due to the build stability and difficulty level (hard but not unfair).
>>
>>553059646
Does LFO solve the issue of CS taking for fucking ever to run around and you run out of stamina in like 10 seconds?
>>
>>553060602
you could solve this in 3 minutes with notepad

>>553060602
Your stamina bar lasts longer (maybe 2-3x) but it refills about the same rate and you will need to sleep every once in a while or else you will be unable to run at all. So kind of but not really. You can't sprint 100% of the time if that's what you want, but there are artifacts that will get you close to that.
>>
>>553055175
Cancer takes years to develop even when exposed to a ton of radiation. Bullets and mutants kill you in seconds.
For reference, a dosage of radiation that will give you burns and make you sick as a dog will only increase your lifetime risk of fatal cancer by ~10%. Distribute that among say 40 years and that's only a ~.25% increased chance of terminal cancer a year (all assuming linearity).
With ~1000 people in the Zone, that's 2 or 3 people a year dying of cancer they contracted from the Zone. There's probably more that shit themselves to death because they ate raw mutant flesh.

It's more that this is at the end of the SIRCAA facility.
Someone randomly set up like 10 shotgun and grenade tripwires in an actively used science facility warehouse.
>>
>>553069974
Isn't that after shit already went wrong and Monolithians started assaulting the facility? Like, you see a firefight between them and some Bapta in the very room you go through to get to that area. Wouldn't be strange to assume either of those parties set them up.
>>
>>553073279
Whoever did that had like 10 minutes to climb over shit and hang off ledges to set up all the tripwires and attach shotguns to the underside of walkways 15 feet off the ground, probably less because they would have had to do it before the warehouse flooded and the water became electrified.
At most one or two grenade tripwires would have made sense, don't know where they even got sawn off double barrel shotguns in SIRCAA in the first place.
>>
>>553052939
I’ve never played any stalker games but why does that dog have so much health?
>>
>>553077836
1. It's stalker 2, all the mutants are super tanky.
2. That's not a dog, it's a chimera, one of the mutant apex predators of the zone. It's about the size of a bear and arguably the second most dangerous thing you can encounter.
>>
Ended up trying Oblivion Lost remake; not super impressed, feels very much like an early access stalker (which, I guess it is); very sparse and open areas with absolutely nothing going on in them.
>>
>>553088557
For me it was an unforgettable experience, the "what could have been" of what we got, but still it's very flawed, being done by a small russian dev group and the balance is all over the place, the reason there's very little things or stalkers is that otherwise would cause a million crashes ( like OLR 3.0).
Once you know how to get rich is a true power fantasy, the M-134 and gauss rifle will make you feel unstoppable.

I got really lucky and am really glad I went with the slugs instead of buckshot. I know the buckshot might have been better for blasting a bloodsucker as it's about to pounce on you, but I just had a feeling I'd need the slugs for some reason.

Considering it's an abandoned, unused section of the facility, Ward probably set up some traps to deal with anyone who somehow gets past the rusty questlocked entrance and tries to sneak in. Remember, SIRCAA is canonically built on top of some abandoned X project facility.
>>
>>553115786
It's been a while since I played misery but iirc the only real bullshit mechanic to me was the psy-fields generated by poltergeists, controllers etc. They will sometimes lead to unavoidable deaths because they will kill you very quickly through walls. One time I was underground in a tunnel early game and a poltergeist passed over me and kept killing me every time I reloaded the save. At that point I couldn't afford psy-block or a better suit so it felt like a severe balance issue. Other than that I'd say the difficulty is manageable if you are extremely careful 100% of the time.

I doubt that, the start of CS is an absolute slog compared to STALKER 2 and I was one of the few that unironically enjoyed CS and the faction war system.
>>
>>553175776
NTA but I think I agree with him. CS still has that fun core STALKER gameplay even though it has several parts that are awful to play through. 2 has issues that aren't a problem in any of the x-ray games that will bother you the whole game, and I'm not just talking about engine issues.

>unironically enjoyed CS and the faction war system
So did I. It was my least favorite, I didn't dislike it.
>>
>>553176163
Yeah it's my least favorite of the games, but I still like it. It still feels pretty rushed and fast though, so I can see why some people say it's more like a SoC DLC than a full game.

>not unfinished
Nigger I beat STALKER when it was 1.0 on release and that shit was buggy and unfinished. You had to use console commands to noclip through shit when doors wouldn't open when they were supposed to. I still have my physical CD around here somewhere. These games became popular IN SPITE of the jank. STALKER SOC was considered vaporware, bro. It had been in development for like 9 years or something. I remember tracking it from Filefront in like 2004 and got hyped when THQ finally announced a release date. The game really didn't reach a stable state until 1.004, and even now the game can still be finicky.

Were they still releasing big box versions of games when Shadow of Chernobyl came out? Or was that already long over with? I would love to have a nice physical copy some day, but would prefer big box if it exists.

Mine is in a standard DVD case, so I think that was around the time they moved away from big box, as I have some other games from the same time period like GTA IV and Crysis that are also in standard DVD cases.

FEAR is big box though and is really nice and tat was 2005, so I guess 2006 or 2007 is when big box was mostly gone.

Yes. Some mods restore it. Most of it was never dubbed, but some elements, the ones that still technically run, did. The anomaly pit north of the rookie village? The rookies are meant to not allow you into the village because they don't trust you, having come off the death truck with a mark and all.
So as part of the cut tutorial, you're meant to go into that artifact pit and get a Jellyfish artifact, then bring it back to the village. The part of this that still exists and runs is the scripted flesh running into a whirlygig and Sidorovich calling you on the radio to warn you about anomalies.

There's also saving Tolik. Most of his part of the tutorial is still in the game, but the actual effects of it were cut. The bit where he says he'll tell everyone at the camp that you're alright, it was supposed to trigger a part of a script that made the rookies in the village consider you trustworthy and thus able to enter the village and mingle with the others. Instead he just runs back and hangs out, never says anything, and you're free to enter the camp the second you leave Sid's bunker.

>>

Did we ever find out why they decided to switch to UE5 after working on it using UE4? I would like to know the reasoning for that decision.
>>
>>553288058
I think UE5 probably had a better dev kit which meant less time spent doing shit themselves, and Microsoft probably pushed them to move to a new engine since they were publishing it and wanted it to at least "look" like a AAA game using the latest engine. I'm sad their X-ray 2 engine died in 2012. I think it was also a missed opportunity, granted GSC would never be humble enough to do this, to ask 4A to use their metro engine which totally wasn't based off of x-ray engine by former GSC devs.

All of the open-ended maps had a nesting Demon and most of the map location enemies and mutant encounters varied wildly between night and day cycles. I doubt it would be impossible to implement because 4A is proprietary and isn't basically cobbled together from UE5 pre-fabs and engine architecture. My biggest gripe with Exodus is combining a little too much of the narrative maps to the more open-ended maps. The latter half of the game is egregious in that sense, while the first 1/3rd with Volga and the Caspian really steal the show.
>>
>>553327991
The lever is on a control panel next to some kind of core. On the opposite side there's a second core, and if you look down, you'll see something that looks like lava at the bottom. I believe it's supposed to show that the Scorcher's operating system is already damaged because one of the cores melted, and Strelok actually turned off the other core's cooling system, which caused irreversible damage and disabled the Scorcher for good.

Forget everything positive I said about LFO. It has the worst gunplay I've ever seen in a STALKER mod - worse than A.R.E.A. I had to give up at the CNPP because reloading a save causes Strelok to despawn permanently. You couldn't beat that section in one go with an aimbot. If someone could take the reworked maps and put them into an actually decent mod, there would be no reason for anyone to play LFO.

>>553333482

The easiest abuse is turning down the difficulty level to novice, you deal way more damage to Strelok's psi protection then, to the point that you don't even have to move from the spawn point because it's possible to deplete it before he gets to the first teleport, and you can avoid all the combat with Monolith. Is it still possible to do in LFO?

>if you magdump it takes 40 bullets instead

>>
>>553351258
From the major areas, it's mostly just Wild Island (and successive maps), Cordon and Pripyat that are completely walled off in a nonsense way from normal player progression. The rest of the major areas are pretty much accessible once you ditch the Lesser Zone. I'm more livid that in terms of world population and progression, so much is gated behind SIRCAA, which makes everything up until that point just a complete tourist theme park of unlocking locations in terms of the of the first half of the game.

>world population and progression
Could you please elaborate? I remember some guy talking about Monolith being added to the spawn pool, but there must be something more.
>>
>>553352696
Mainstay is the Monolith and generally the world state just changing, like there being certain events in specific areas of the map that enables Zombie spawns (Lesser Zone) and most of the lair behaviour for mutants changing across the board. This is most visible through your last hours in the game and generally a save that's pretty much just shy of completing "Let No One Leave Unsatisfied" has most of the map enabled in ways where you're likely to see more conflict on maps or run into more conflict in areas you've visited previously. When you practically trip around the Zone before you've visited the Swamps, there isn't any kind of curve in terms of difficulty and although there are some mods that fix it by introducing higher difficulty spawns in certain areas, generally tripping through something like Red Forest or Duga is similar to strolling around the Lesser Zone for most of the first half of the game.
>>
>>553353671
I see, gating story progression by introducing what essentially is level scaling definitely isn't the best solution for everyone. That said, I don't think the problem with sequence breaking the game is really possible to solve perfectly in open world games. It's either level scaling or gating content away. Even Kingdom Come that generally does not have level scaling introduced stronger enemies to the spawn pool.

This is an FPS, not a JRPG, it's impossible to gate story progression by stronger enemies you can't defeat. Also, you get a free sniper rifle from Strider, so the game makes sure you get at least some weapon that can kill exos even if you do 0 exploration.

Most of the story gated content seems kind of pointlessly restricted once monolith comes back, it doesn't really seem like there's a balance justification for it even in the early game as well.
You can immediately rush some of the best weapons once you're out of the lesser zone and even with the best armors most of your damage resistance comes from artifacts, the best of which can be found at any time with luck anyway.

I regularly kill multiple bloodsuckers at once because GSC decided kiting packs of bloodsuckers, that each need six buckshot to the chest and constantly make knockdown attacks with shitty gigantic hitboxes, around an obstacle is engaging gameplay.
If I didn't have a saiga that could just immediately dump an entire mag of buckshot into my target, fighting mutants would be the most annoying part of this game, mutants are quite possibly the most botched feature of stalker 2.
>>553463571
They added some boring whimsical deer that just summons woodland creatures to nibble your ankles, it's also a bullet sponge.
>>
>>553465287
they're kind of pushovers in 2 as well, or annoyances rather. my point was that they had to make them bullet sponges because you're going to be shooting them throughout the entire game, with an AK in the tutorial and a Saiga in Pripyat. they could actually make them even more threatening if they didn't have to include a bloodsucker fight in the tutorial.

They should just give them proper invisibility, and only make them visible briefly right before they attack. But you can maybe spot them by watching out of movements in foliage or sound, or by tactically positioning yourself so it can only come at you from one direction
>>
>>553466069
for me poltergeists are the worst because you can't instanuke them with the saiga or dodge their projectiles
the only mutant encounters i really enjoy in 2 are the scripted controller fights
>>
>>553466434
Well you can dodge their projectiles but doing so within a confined space that doesn't allow you room to sprint laterally relative to the projectile can make it really hard.
Is it even a bug that poltergeist and burer telekinesis sends objects through walls? It seems stupid and annoying enough to be intentional.
>scripted controller fights
Psi damage almost instantly spawning multiple "hallucinations" that immediately shoot you and do actual physical damage to you and your armor is fucking horrible.

>>
>>553466134
Made me realize how much I want to be able to fuck around with computers in the zone. Not even sure what you'd use them for though
>>
>>553467038
my last controller encounter was in the bunker in red forest where you have to shoot through hordes of zombies while trying to avoid getting seen by the controller and then at the end you can just magdump it. that was fun, but yeah there are some horrible encounters too

those anomalies that spawn hallucinations are far worse imo because there's no clear indication that you're even hallucinating. the game spawns enemies on top of you all the time normally so it doesn't stand out that the enemies are coming out of nowhere, and like you said they do real damage
>>
>>553467459
Shouldn't PDAs be practically unusable due to the extremely radioactive areas stalkers constantly pass through? I feel like they'd need a lead shell as a case to not have their components permanently destroyed by gamma radiation constantly.
>>
>>553467979

The projectile objects going through walls is definitely a bug but obviously one they're not too bothered about because it's been there for months now I think.

>>553466093
There's nothing inherently wrong with the mutants in general. The problem is that some savant genius in GSC thought it would be absolutely amazing to have them work as the flushing toilet for the ammo economy, which is still useless because every ape even in this thread will just equip a Saiga and magically solve the issue with rapid fire buckshot to the face. I think most of the mutant rework mods solve the issue just fine as you'll end up with mutants that have specifically more dangerous damage and tweaked behaviour so you die real quick, but the mutants also have lower health so the only thing that matters isn't which weapon can spit the most pellets per minute. I think the most egregious reason some mutants can take so much punishment is also the split between armored health and normal health which is completely fucked on certain mutants (Burer and Marsh Bloodsuckers in general)

Squint is kind of unique. After the factory (or if you side with Ward) he basically populates groups and roams the whole Zone as an NPC and he can meet his end in many places during firefights until Sawmill. He is one of the zombified stalkers in Scar's cutscene. If you let him be, he'll eventually also wind up back in the Lesser Zone and the area with the Windmill and can be among one of the many groups of zombies there.

The experiment had nothing to do with Monolith object. They were not "reactivating Monolith", and I have no idea why you continue repeating it.
It was Caribbean experiment, the exactly same experiment that had been conducted twice in the past. Once it was completely successful, the second time it failed, but it didn't have any major negative effects. The in-game experiment failed only because of Faust's interference they couldn't predict.

did the experiment cause it or did whatever faust did cause it? i wasn't clear on this while i was playing.
>>
>>553526817

The experiment and faust caused it, the former because the experiment was necessary for that to be a possibility, the latter because he manipulated outside circumstances in such a way that the signal could be used by "The Monolith" to start doing monolith things again.
SIRCAA effectively opened a door for monolith because they were bad at gathering intel around the zone and because the scientists working in that particular program weren't smart enough to figure the possible consequences of their actions and safeguard against them. SIRCAA enabled faust's plan.
>>
Am I crazy or does IWP have different vertical sensitivity than horizontal?
>>
>>553518876
That wasn't caused by SIRCAA. Faust and his men changed the route of the experiment, which reactivated the X-Network rather than the generators. You can see the change at Azimuth and you can note in on the screen during the signal cutscene. It routes to the Duga. Faust also uploaded something to the alpha at Clear Sky. Plus the psi-amplifiers at specific locations helped spread the signal, The Sphere, Wild Island, etc.

In SoC mutants can drop pretty much any item on death, it doesn't have to be a mutant part. So, you could create an artifact that uses a mutant part icon/model, have the mutant drop it on death, and thus the player gets an equippable mutant part.
>>
>>553573674
That's not in vanilla SoC fren, sounds like you're referring to a mod. Which one?

The Wish Granter isn't what turned stalkers into Monolithians, it was the last ace up C-Con's sleeve if anyone managed to get past the Monolithians. Psi-emitters like the Brain Scorcher were responsible for taking control over people.

Throwing in random side characters from the trilogy just for the "do you remember this guy?" effect and without explaining what they're even still doing in the Zone after 10 years is cheap nostalgia baiting and not an acknowledgement of the series canon. There's only a few characters that appear both in SoC and CS, even though even though the events of these games are a year apart. That's because the Zone is fucking dangerous and people die there everyday, so only a few manage to survive for a long time there. And many of those who survive, sooner or later leave.
Some of the more important characters have also become caricatures of themselves.
>remember Sidorovich, the greedy old bastard?
>he's still in the bunker, eating chicken and listening to the same song since 2012!
Great character development. Besides, S2 shits on the series canon anyway if we're talking about lore. So yeah, I don't like it.

Lore in the original trilogy was practically nonexistent so I don't really understand that complaint.

>>
>>553583648
>Lore in the original trilogy was practically nonexistent
So you are saying that the hundreds of dialogues and descriptions didn't form any kind of lore? There are several inconsistencies and retcons in the trilogy, that's undeniable, but overall the series had an established lore. S2 fucked it up in many ways.
>>
>>553584561
Yes, but I want agro mode not assassin mode.
>>
>>553583875
The number of Monolithians was always more of a gameplay gimmick rather than something with a logical justification, but yeah, they were already weakened in CoP so there shouldn't be that many of them a decade later.
>>
Where did the monolithians all get matching camo outfits?
>>
>>553585561

>>
>>553585090
Most of the dialogue was chitchat which created a cozy atmosphere with the way stalkers talked abut random things, but as far as the Zone's backstory is concerned it's practically never touched upon. It took three games to have a foundation laid down for the Zone's emergence with Lab X8 as before that it was just a hologram run by hippies telling you that they dun goofed.
Funnily enough SoC's official website has plenty of background lore, like how the first stalkers appeared, but it's never brought up in the actual game for some reason.

I agree that the background behind the Zone itself and the noosphere weren't really fleshed out in the trilogy, but I'm talking about things like the factions, established events, legends, PDA entries, all that jazz. That was lore and it wasn't completely random or unimportant.
>SoC's official website has plenty of background lore, like how the first stalkers appeared, but it's never brought up in the actual game for some reason.
That's because this background lore was taken from desgin documents written all the way back in 2002/2003, some of it contradicted the in-game lore of SoC itself, and then CS and CoP made it completely non-canon.
>>
>>553582229
>every returning character returns for a reason
>DURR IT'S JUST NOSTALGIABAIT
Yeah I guess not killing off everyone like what happened to the Yantar lab comes off that way when you're intentionally being a reductionist twat hell bent on finding shit to cry about.
>>
>>553587429
It was still largely minimal, Duty's backstory is just hinted at in the first two games before CoP tell you it was born out of a disgruntled soldier who got most of his comrades killed or how Freedom was just some hippies who decided to gather and become one of the Zone's strongest factions just like that.
Anyways, I'm not saying S2 was perfectly flawless in its lore developments, but acting like it completely retroactively shat on the originals is dumb. My biggest gripe with it is the new Zone layout.
>>
i was confident for about 3/4 of the game that richter was supposed to be a hallucination or like a physical representative of the spirit of the zone or something like that

There's one thing I'm confused about with it though. If someone has had the STALKER programming, being exposed to the programming again kills them (which happened to Dark in that scene) so why didn't it happen to Strelok too? He'd been through the same programming.
>>
>>553619828
During my initial playthroughs I always ended up with the fakeout endings or joining C-Consciousness, as I had no idea about seeing Doctor and getting the door decoder to get to Monolith HQ. I knew about the door but could never figure out how to get it open or didn't know what the door even lead to.
>>
>>553627872
He definitely broke his programming and made himself immune through main character fuckery. Please do not consider the possibility that he's a C-Con triple agent designed to trick Skifs who think they're too smart to fall for Scar's bullshit.
>>
>>553628573
I don't know if that could work if the programming zaps you if you try a second time. But I think Strelok is the one who says it, so maybe it was bullshit and he programmed something for Dark specifically.
Though at the same time random exposure caused Scar to freeze and sperg for a few moments, but not die, so I'm not sure what to think.
>>
>>553628928
If you think about the programming thing for a bit it stops making any sense. If you get programmed for the first time by watching the TVs then how come Skif never gets programmed? If that isn't sufficient for programming then why does Dark lose his shit?
My gut tells me GSC just didn't think any of this through. But it's definitely more fun to think that Strelok was lying and is some kind of special agent without a will of his own.
>random exposure caused Scar to freeze and sperg for a few moments, but not die, so I'm not sure what to think
Scar is also a special kind of agent since he isn't even Scar, he's a husk with Marshal's personality
>>
>>553629847
>My gut tells me GSC just didn't think any of this through
I get that feeling too. My best guess is the screens were specific to Dark or that to be affected by the screens, you have to be put into a certain sedated state first (as seen by people in the hallways sitting and watching the screens without any restraints).

>Scar is also a special kind of agent since he isn't even Scar, he's a husk with Marshal's personality
That too. Would that have been the usual agent programming or did he have something very different happen? I realize he had the screen treatment but an entire personality being replaced seems like something more.
>>
>>553629847
Strelok's messages (to himself) indicate something happened to him in the time since CoP and working at the institute, and fucked him up.
>>
>>553641734
Considering Strelok always had a thing for exploring dangerous areas and going where he shouldn't, it's possible he got affected by something in a bad area he found and got brainwashed again or Faust may have done something to him with old Monolith tech. I think the secret ending where not killing Doctor like Strelok asks reveals that Doctor is Faust might allude to something like that. There's some kind of Strelok and Faust connection I think.

NTA but in s2 Strelok says that Dark was killed by the tv screens because the tv screens program you and you can't survive being programmed twice. Strelok himself is standing right nearby when this happens and it's a mystery why the second programming doesn't affect him.

Ah, now I get it.
Well, probably the simplest explanation is that Strelok simply didn't look at TV screens. Alternatively it's because there was an error during his initial programming (it's mentioned in Strelok's c-con agent files).
>>
>>553629847
Look at the ending cutscene of CS. The programming doesn't happen just from casually viewing the screen for a few seconds. It's one step removed from full Clockwork Orange. Skif is safe not really, if you get the Ward ending because he just saw bits and pieces on the side. He wasn't strapped in and exposed long-term.

>>
>>553690031
It's not a PSU issue (as it's only just upgraded a few weeks ago and works just fine), neither a graphical one at that. It's likely related to the area in question already being bugged formerly with some weird ass duplication and loot bug on the NPC's and the game just shits up your CPU/GPU pipeline completely and instead of crashing to desktop, it just decides it's safer to boot then risk component damage when the game spawns six million energy drinks into a stash or corpse. It's only ever been fish farm too, honestly. The place is cursed.

Anything's possible with a large enough magazine, but that magazine definitely isn't actually physically large enough to fit 500 rounds of 7.62x54.
The ammunition alone would also make that magazine at least 12 pounds, then there's the weight of the magazine itself and the belt, and it would be about five times larger by volume than the pictured magazine.

Fish farm and ladders are the only places where the game crashes in any decent measure and ladder UE crash reports are always about the repeating input key bug that happens when holding shift during descents as it still continues to be counted as a series of repeating inputs, but that's about it. If it was a PSU issues and you could replicate in cases of different games or if the S2 crashes were more frequent, that would be the case but it's always been fish farm on every single occasion and only that specific quest and corpses across all versions i've played of the game. For S2, Veteran+ is just fine unless you're deliberately looking to play either hardcore or want the limited Expedition saves. Veteran+ is just triggered from enabling saves on Master and from a gameplay perspective, it's identical to Master with the exception of just losing the Master rank. It feels kind of pointless in S2 in that sense, because it's actually just a honorific on the dificulty level you carry for having Expedition around.
