He isn't admonished for this. The story praises this as if this is some incredible thing. It is incredible but now there is absolutely nothing to take away from the plot. For SatAMnic to be as in character for what he was when SoA had arguably the least amount of info to work with, I myself at least. Have to look at it with the lens they had. For me, Sonic consistently ignores Sally for his own gain, only cries when it has to do with Uncle Chuck or someone really important, and actually does go on the adventures for the hell of it (Think about the Ancient Ruins in S1 for example) they just give the characters reasons to go there because of what they knew at the time.

Sonic is exactly as confident as he thinks he is. When he starts talking about how fast he is and how strong he is he's able to match up to it. At most the verbal inflection he gives in the english dubs will make him sound a bit more jovial but even if we're strictly going by the english version he's never portrayed as the quipping thrillball he is in SatAM. But that's just the characterization as a whole, if he's supposed to be the "wind" welll... no. SatAM Sonic isn't a traveler or an adventurer, he wants his home back. He's not exactly a calming force, which is where the whole "wind" term comes from. The general concept of Sally is somewhat windpilled though, since she's the real protagonist of the Show and Sonic is the catalyst for his development, but for her sake there are a number of things Sonic does and says that are not represented in any videogame from any error. To say he's in-character is a misnomer unless we're using the caveat that it's an early franchise entry that didn't have much to work with, which is a fair argument.
