>>553228030In my opinion, the joke regarding the fucked up keigo isn't something that translates to English since English doesn't use politeness registers in the same way Japanese does, so the important thing is to make something that's actually a joke and fits the context where it's used, such as him using it in serious situations when talking to guard captains. In other words, I think it's one of those things where the linguistic details are less important that the substance, which is that it's supposed to be a joke. Like if you tried to translate it in a way that's more technically accurate (I'm not even sure how you would do this), but it wasn't funny, then you'd end up translating the substance of it incorrectly because the Japanese is supposed to be a joke. Languages just don't correlate 1:1 in this way, and trying to force them to can end up missing the point of what's being said to begin with, which I think is worse than failing to communicate a technicality that an English reader can't even relate to.

It's kind of a weird game in that it's rather unappealing on a superficial level and you have to actually play it to figure it out why it's good. In context the "big X, bro" is that MC is talking to another prisoner who is telling him about how to get by in the prison, and he tells MC that if you apologize you should say it like that, and MC takes it literally and keeps using continually for the rest of the game. It doesn't seem like it's going to be a running joke at first, which ends up making it funnier once that starts happening. The MC is like 14 and some kind of hyper autismo which I didn't know about before starting it.
