Let’s talk about Madoka.>WINGAfter the Producer has scouted Toru, he happens to meet a girl in front of the office who seems interested in becoming an idol. He invites her into the office to discuss it further, but she suggests talking at a nearby cafe instead. During the discussion, the Producer feels as though he is being interrogated rather than having a friendly chat. The girl reveals herself as Madoka, Toru’s childhood friend. She explains that she wants to make sure Toru isn't being scammed by his sweet words, so she intends to keep an eye on him. However, as the Producer already believes Madoka is something special, he decides to scout her as well, calling her a diamond in the rough. Madoka reluctantly accepts once she is told she can work alongside Toru.Madoka’s first job is a photoshoot. The Producer tries to motivate her, but Madoka teases him, calling him an Mr. Old Type, who is far too passionate about every little detail of the work. To help her open up, the Producer takes her to a nearby CD shop where an idol is performing to promote a latest release (let’s call her CD girl). Madoka comments on how easy it seems to be an idol, suggesting that anyone can make it as long as they smile. The Producer disagrees, saying it is actually quite difficult to smile for someone else. Madoka thinks smiling as a form of attention-seeking and finds it so embarrassing that she will never do it.One day, a fan comes across Madoka and gets very excited. Although Madoka understands it is her duty to engage, she seems puzzled by what she should do or what fans actually expect from her. The Producer tells her to simply show some kindness. Madoka retorts that if he keeps acting like Mr. Nice Guy and making small talk with her, she will start asking for financial compensation. Later, when she receives fan letters, she is baffled by how both the fans and the Producer can be so energetic about idol.

She doesn't want to be constantly judged, burdened by expectations, and eventually forced to realise her own limitations. She is terrified of that kind of life. The Producer apologises for forcing her to speak her mind. He acknowledges that while she is a diamond in the rough, and was just a stone at the beginning, she has worked very hard without telling anyone in order to shine. He tells her he is trying to give her wings. The sky might be full of thunderstorms. She might eventually fail. But aim high, and cry together if they don't make it. Madoka simply says she won't cry.Eventually, Madoka wins WING. She makes fun of the Producer, asking if he needs some tissue for his issues, which he is embarrassed to admit he might. Madoka can no longer hide that she is happy with the result, and she thanks him for everything. At the end, she says goodbye, not to Mr. Nice Guy, or Mr. Dreamer, or Mr. Old Type, but to you, her Producer.

Unlike some of her colleagues, her story gives a proper, lengthy introduction to how the Producer scouted her. Then through different scenarios, it gives us a clear view of her perspective on idol work, her way of life, and her dreams and fears. As an extra, it also takes a peek at the harsh reality of being an idol. The ending is just perfection. It is not my first time reading her WING. In fact, I have read it several times. But when I read the ending again and hear how she calls me (yes, ME) Producer, my heart just skips a beat.Anyway, WING is just a very good package. The story tells you everything you need to know about her; it is quite self-contained, yet it leaves you hungering for more. A final sidenote. I find it quite interesting how the style of writing has changed slightly throughout the years. Compared to her recent cards, which are somewhat gloomy and melancholy, WING is rather lighthearted, though still more serious than the other idols. You can even argue that Madoka is being a bit of a classic tsundere at the end, which is something you will not really find in later chapters.

Maybe Madoka was invited as an up-and-coming idol, the girl though, she was invited specifically to be made fun of. They are going to use her as a laughing stock, a role she understood and accepted. According to the script, the girl was supposed to say how pathetic she was, and everyone, including Madoka, was meant to point at her and laugh. However, Madoka stayed silent. When the MC asked why the long face, what’s wrong? She simply said she can’t do it. She couldn't bring herself to make fun of someone for just being who they are. Later, CD girl confronts Madoka about it, asking if Madoka only stayed silent because she felt pity for her.

He says it is hard to define right and wrong, but he refuses to believe her actions were just a sign of immaturity. Madoka asks him if those words are coming from the Producer, or the man behind the suit.After winning GRAD, Madoka meets CD girl again. CD girl tells her that this is the end, and she is quitting. Madoka struggles to identify her own emotions. Is it respect, admiration, or a sense of superiority? CD girl tells Madoka she is glad they met. She likes how great Madoka is, even if she hates her a little for it. Before she leaves, Madoka stops her, saying that her choices were not taken lightly. She tells her that those choices were heavy and packed with emotion, so let’s hope they both keep moving forward.

The evidence is a bit weak, as the only evidence is Madoka thinks about that idol when she comes across the CD shop again. Nonetheless, I think the story is more enjoyable if we treat the idol and the CD girl as the same person (the girl is definitely the idol who appeared in PSSR2 though), so that is what I am going to do.GRAD tackles the talent side of Madoka really well. It is not the first time the story mentions that she can handle things easily, and I really like how the writers handle the Mary Sue allegations by suggesting she feels shame for her talent. Her journey is not as bumpy as everyone else's. Other people have a much tougher life. Looking at CD girl, Madoka feels ashamed of how gifted she is and how she does not work as hard as the other girl did. That is why she cannot laugh at her. She knows the CD girl must have gone through a very difficult path that Madoka could never imagine just to make it to the show, even if only as a laughing stock.I just love the contradiction between Madoka's self-claimed how light she is and her actions, which are, in fact, heavy. The fact that she is so regretful about her actions that she needs to consult the Producer shows that her emotions are actually quite heavy. Another highlight for me is the Producer. I really like how the writer uses him and the indecisiveness he feels when conveying his true feelings while keeping his professionalism intact as a mirror to what Madoka has done. Overall, it is a really good piece of work. It showcases the reality of the business while still ending the story on a good note.

He noticed that from the seats, the stage looks sparkling, but it does not look that way from the other side. Madoka asks if that is the reason for the solo live. He wants to let the world see how dazzling she is.

The Producer lends her a hand, but Madoka says she would rather drown than hold his hand. He apologises for asking her to do the impossible, but he is determined to help her even if she says no. He refuses to let her drown. Madoka replies that she really hates him.Before the Landing Point live, Madoka tells the Producer that she finally understands. He isn't producing an idol. He is producing her. The stage is bright and the lights are twinkling. Every fan is looking at her, but she isn't standing there for approval or attention. She is there because she wants to sing. But if there are people who want to stay and listen, then so be it.

Overall, the content is less straightforward than her previous stories, but it’s a good introduction for what follows. This is what some may described as filter content. If you like this story, you will love the rest. If you don't, you probably shouldn’t proceed.A sidenote.
