A small price to pay for her to learn Magic Burst.
>>
To the anon that's struggling with Octavian.
He's heavily scripted like Knight Aberrant in DQIHD, so once you learn his script, its entirely down to resource management.

Script in spoilers

Turn 1: Cop Out
Turn 2: Attack, Self Buff
Turn 3: Attack, Attack, Defending Champion
Turn 4: Attack, Self Buff
Turn 5: Attack, Attack, Bounce
Turn 6: 3x Attack

Strategy here
All you have to do at his point is use Forbearance/Soul Asylum on the correct turns and precast Kazing when you think Midenhall will die while trying to tank. Moonbrooke will likely be your primary DPS here, by using Duplic Hat + Wild Side Kabooms and just Big Banga on turns where Bounce is up. The Cannock siblings will play support, especially mp management
>>
>>553332243
>Mummy Dearest
He's pretty vulnerable to Dazzle/Snooze, so all you have to do at that point is just use Oomph Powder + Muster Strength + Undead Undoer. If you lucked out on the Golden Claws, its a clean two shot, if you didn't then either Cannock or Moonbrooke will have to contribute to wipe him out. After that the fight is a lot more bearable.
On normal mode, you'll probably have Kabuff at that point to take off some of the heat, but the guy just hits so hard, that you're probably going to resort to the same strat anyway.

The actual shit boss you listed there are the dracozombies because those fuckers don't have any real way to handle damage mitigation beyond Insulatle which I think no one will realistically have unless they got lucky with metal slimes or play on journalist mode. I don't know of any good way beyond Coagulants for that fight.
>>
>>553342258
Is that how the patterns work, they just do a random attack but the other stuff is scripted?
That explains why I could never figure out any patterns despite people saying they're there.
>>
>>553345774
There is a "pattern". Its just not as super scripted as in other jrpgs.

They're going to do 4/5/6 in the same style because they're related. Its also laughable if you think they're going to shaft DQ4 of all games in that trilogy.

Am I just schizophrenic or does 11 have a sort of surreal feeling to it? It feels like it's both grounded and cartoony at the same time, and it's also a little weird to see a 3D game with Toriyama art style be done so well.
>>
>>553352231
>it's also a little weird to see a 3D game with Toriyama art style be done so well.
Watch the cutscenes of the original DQ7 sometime. Japan literally calls it "horror movie".
>>
>>553352231
It's definitely a little odd, but it's only the pre-rendered cutscenes that are actually off-putting.
I still don't understand why DQ8's style doesn't get used anymore. Especially with the cheaper spinoffs like Treasures or DQM3 it would look a million times better than what they've been trying.

>>
>>553446542
personally i'm of the "if i can't enjoy it then i can't be bothered with it, even if everyone else is saying it's so good" mentality, and i mean if you're reduced to feeling like you *have* to finish it then idk i would just drop it
that said, maybe it would work if you just take a break (though i imagine you already tried that), or try the upcoming remake instead
>>
>>553446542
Seconding the other post. The remake is tailored towards those who dropped the original by streamlining it so it may be better for you
>>
Its funny because the remake already has multiple endings for the events in Ballymolloy when if memory serves me correctly there was only one in the original.

What did you think of the difficulty settings? I liked everything set to Tough Going, but I'm not sure if damage dealt felt right on normal or less. Enemies early on seem to be just a little too tanky.

>keep the doll
you get the ending closest to the original game
>give the doll
you get a better ending where the villagers team up to deal with the problem. There's two variants based on you killing Maeve and you running away from the boss fight

At the grave after the fight
one answer gives you a statbooster, other one keeps the doll

>What did you think of the difficulty settings?
I'm reminded of Pokemon ROM hacks that'll just give the player a bunch of level-boosting items at the start of the game and how people will refer to that as "QoL."
Maybe it's because I've played a lot of old games, but I'm not sure how I feel about this trend where developers give players so much freedom in difficulty options to the point it feels like balance is no longer an element of the game and the developer's intent, but rather something purely bent to the player's whims. An "easy/normal/hard" option that you select at the start of a new game would've been enough, but maybe journalists and "story-enjoyers" would say otherwise these days. Not that DQ was ever all that challenging in the first place, but here we are.
>>
>>553479561
You're pretending like if most players didnt just grind their way past any issue instead of attempting to learn the game.
Tough Going in the demo was well designed with the party members having well defined rolls and item distribution was good enough for you to get by with proper money management if you didnt sell the Bowtie for 750G.

If they keep this up throughout the game, it'll be one of the better designed "hard" modes.
>>
>>553479561
Those "romhacks" or rather hardcore nuzlocke bait are not adventures. They're glorified battle simulators meant to cater to a specific crowd.
A journo will just play on easy mode and its easy to identify who's playing on baby modes when you look at their levels.
>>
If I buy DQ3HD can I make the party look exactly like them (in particular she), or just a close approximation?

I just played the original "Dragon Warrior VII" up to completing the first island, I'm already experienced with DQ7 on 3DS and so I don't need to do that one again, and now I'm trying the Reimagined demo. It's going to be an interesting personal project this year seeing how three separate versions of the same game play out.
>>
>>553481650
I don't think you can get it exact, but you should be able to match their hair colors at least.
>>
>>553479561
>>553481897
There's clearly an industry-wide trend toward optionalizing every possible aspect of gameplay to the point that the difficulty can't be thought through at all. DQ isn't that bad yet, but look at something like the newest Doom where you can micro-adjust parry timings and a million other things.
Not exactly related to the difficulty settings but "QoL" has absolutely been fetishized too, and that's already hurt DQ with stuff like letting you Zoom from anywhere.

Not really. There's plenty of modern games where the difficulty sliders are just Easy/Normal/Hard. Using Atlus for example, the only game to my memory that gives you this level of control was P4G.

It's SE don't be surprised if they're just overworking people and the producer and director switched roles for XII. Hexadrive is working on both 7R and XII so the teams probably have overlap. But also since DQ has always changed developers and they really only started having inhouse development on X and XI, it's quite possible they're trying to train up a relatively young guy to lead XII as it's supposed to be establishing the future of the series. So might be someone who was a lead on XI but not a director or anything.
>>
So in the HD remakes, is the priest of Beran/prince of Rendarak a descendant of the hero of Aliahan, too?

>after 3, hero of Aliahan leaves behind legendary equipment and vanishes mysteriously
>builds grave for his father, Ortega, at western isle where they both arrived in Alefgard. Leaves his father's helm there
>travels the land in hopes of finding a way to his home above
>ends up settling on the highest land he finds (thus the closest to the world above), the plateau of Rendarak
>remains close friends with Robbin' 'Ood, who founds Dirkandor
>descendant in DQI could be from child he had in Alefgard, or traveled there from Rendarak, since he seems to be an outlander
>tainted by the evil of Zoma, whom the hero of Aliahan destroyed, Hargon's first target is Rendarak, Aliahan's legacy, and he takes it for his own
>prince traveled with 3 guards, making a full party of four, just like in DQIII
>present day King of Dirkandor is the only person who knows Prince of Rendarak's secret identity
>game makes a big deal about the Prince having safeguarded the passage back, thus facilitating salvation as Aliahan's arrival did generations ago
>prince clings to life long enough to see a world free from evil at the end of DQII, and peacefully dies in the company of the heroes, the remaining scions of Erdrick; his family, although none of them know it

And lastly, picrel. In his youth, the guy looked an awful lot like the prince of Aliahan. Whaddya think? Too schizo? Not schizo enough?
>>
>>553532497
There's only one translation for I&II SFC that I'm aware of, but it has a couple of versions IIRC. The older one has a rare bug that can cause a game-ending softlock in II, and not too long ago a patch was made to fix that. You'll have to do your own research on that end, though. If you don't want to bother, the NES/GBC versions are fine.
>>553585646
Sounds reasonable to me, all the breadcrumbs line up best I can tell.
>>
>>553585646
>descendant in DQI traveled there from Rendarak, since he seems to be an outlander
...this would explain why Hargon targeted Rendarak, and then Moonbrooke. After the Dragonlord's failure, his first target is the home of the hero that killed him, then he starts going after the descendants.

>>553585646
>tainted by the evil of Zoma, whom the hero of Aliahan destroyed, Hargon's first target is Rendarak, Aliahan's legacy
if he knew the bloodline of the hero was in Rendarak, why wouldn't he have just destroyed it first?
>>
>>553589683
I don't think he would have cared or even known prior to the events of DQI. Hargon wasn't a direct agend of Zoma, and he didn't have a vendetta with the hero's bloodline until the Dragonlord was killed by him.
>>
The HD-2D games really leave Zoma as the odd man out in the whole saga.
>>
>>553591872
His actions are the catalyst for the entire trilogy.
>>
>>553591872
yeah, I went looking through a lot of lore to see if he had any deeper connections, but it seems like he's just the asshole who gets everything started like >>553593134 said, and then he fucks off for good.

The HD remakes imply he came up through a portal in Talontear Tunnel, not unlike how the hero of Aliahan came down from above, so I guess that's where they feel comfortable leaving it. It's possible that rift lead to the same dark/underworld that Estark is the master of in later games. They both have a third eye in the middle of their forehead as part of their design, so maybe Zoma is ultimately a subordinate of Estark? Who knows?

I'm also not sure what the connection to Calasmos might be. I haven't quite finished the DQ2 postgame yet.

There's two or three timelines by the end of DQ11.

Oh boy that's a godsend.
So I have been discussing Dragon Quest's influences on fantasy, isekai, tropes and MGQ lately so I decided to start it due to that, eventually narrowing down to DQ3 as it's the source of some of the infamous designs and basis the above that get popularized, apparently to the point when DQIII was released people were being mugged on the streets for copies.
That said, I narrowed to either 3DS or the Switch but apparently the Switch's HD Remake changes a lot of stuff including ''problematic'' designs. Does anyone know and could give me comparisons between the versions? Including the SNES rom that I plan to install. In fact it seems I don't have other options aside the SNES or the remake huh?
>>
>>553613945
The only version of DQ3 that I would actively warn you away from is the phone/3DS/PS4/original Switch port. All of those are based on the phone version, missing some content with no upsides, and the PS4/Switch version (only the Switch version got an English release) is particularly ugly.
NES, SNES, GBC and HD-2D are all fine to play, with some different upsides and downsides. If you're interested in the game as a historical artifact there's no harm in playing the NES version.
>>
>>553585646
narp, apparently I'm wrong. I always thought Erdrick's Hollow/Cave was not his grave, and just a tablet he left behind. None of the games EVER called it his grave. Until HD 1. When you see the monument, it's referred to as a "gravestone". Erdrick just diddled around in Alefgard and died. Lame.

That's the shitty one, those are all uglified ports of the phone versions. The ports of 1+2 included there are actually even worse than the version of DQ3 you get too. Just play the SNES versions if you want something similar to that but not terrible.

I mean, it's really only "problematic" in the promotional art. The sprites themselves, with the exception of Trolls, aren't terribly in-your-face or noticeable unless you're specifically trying to look for it.
But that's just like, my own opinion, man.

I believe they said it's very difficult to get the lighting to be as sophisticated as it was in the OG game. This is using the lightning mod that's a part of Project Rebuild, I don't remember how the original looked but this looks a lot better than default, even with the overdone bloom.

Might be useful for routing on Tough Going with minimal grind based on what we know from previous releases and pre-release footage

>Hero
Shortest possible path is 7 vocations via Warrior, Martial, Mage, Priest, 3x Intermediate
If you want to master everything at least once for the inevitable trophy, then you'll do
Thief, Sailor, Shepard, 2x Basic, Pirate, Monster Wrangler, 1x Intermediate.
>Druid
Mage, Priest, Warrior, Sage, Armamentalist
Mage, Priest, Dancer, Gadabout, Troubadour, Sage, Luminary
>Champion
[Warrior, Martial Artist, Priest, Gladiator

In the original you were better off going 2 Intermediate -> Champion. Biggest issue I had with the 3DS version was how hard they buffed beginner class acquisition, it felt pretty silly to be an island or two after Alltrades and be rocking Paladins and Sages and shit. Don't exactly have high hopes for the moonlighting mechanic
>>
>>553689676
That's why I never went past Beginner to round out basic skills for the party. Plus I didn't like the forced outfit changes with each job.
>>
>>553689676

Vocation abilities dont carry over, so if everyone was stuck to just one vocation, it means that your movepools would be overly restricted. Moonlighting and the reworked requirements exist so you'd get actual tools to work with. Champion/Druid apparently dont count for Hero anymore and Sages dont have to use Luminary either.

For example if you were only allowed to be a Mage, your skill list would be
Frizz, Snooze, Dazzle, Bang, Frizzle, Sap, Sizzle, Kasap, Drain Magic, Blunt, Boom, Channel Anger and Kafrizz. That's 13 skills + Let Loose with everything maxed out.
Priests on the other hand get
Heal, Squelch, Woosh, Buff, Midheal, Fizzle, Crackle, Swoosh, Multiheal, Benediction, Zing, Whack, Alma Mater. For a total of 13 + Let Loose.

A pure mage in 3HD would have like 32 spells by the end where as an 8* Mage/Priest is running 26 skills.

No interest in reopening that can of worms or derailing the thread into complaining but the situation is interesting to me because it really looks like they started development with the belief the design could stay the same, got told they couldn't if they wanted to keep a B rating (note: literally every DQ, including XI and every MMO version is CERO A so B seems like a compromise already) and concocted the shorts design to make the sprite still mostly look the same. If they committed to a full redesign it would probably look more like the DQXI Warrior model. Too bad none of the devs will ever give a clear answer on this.
>>
>>553708639
Interesting theory. It seems like they were experimenting with different options since there was also that particularly awful version that showed up in Rivals and some other stuff.
I don't get too worked up about censorship (in DQ at least) anymore because it seems like there's just no chance that they'll go up a rating no matter how old the audience actually is, but there are just a couple of designs like Maya and female Warrior that they just haven't been able to come up with decent redesigns for. HD-2D Warrior is the most tolerable of a bad bunch, and DQM3 Maya is completely revolting. If it's absolutely necessary to censor her for some future remake I hope they just put her in something like Serena's dancer's costume instead of trying to make the metal bikini somehow work.
>>
>>553709414
To me the DQ3 HD2D design looks bad and sloppy in key art and is tolerable as a sprite. I like the DQXI riff on female warrior but it's a completely different design and if they used that it would draw even more attention to itself since no other design changed. DQM3 Maya is absolutely horrendous and if they ever remake 4 or have her appear in something again I really hope they just bite the bullet on the higher rating.

I had the funniest experience just now. I'm playing DQ1 on GBC, and I got to the first town. I spend all my money on equipment and was left with only 2G. I decide to talk to the NPC and a female one ends up following me. Go the Inn to rest, the Inn costs 3GP. I figured "Oh well" and went up the stairs at which point that NPC that was following me vanishes. Looked it up and turns out she sleeps with you at the Inn and my boy kept his virginity because he was short 1G. That's incredibly funny and I wasn't expecting that at all.

i disagree with the qol complainers but reimagined doing a shared bag between all characters is really wack. And i don't mean in a "muh resource management!!!" autism way (it really doesn't take any more "management" to just put 5 herbs in each bag every once in a while), it's just a game identity thing, a "gimmick" of sorts for DQ in the jrpg space. Like this is the only true "qol but actually it's dumbing a mechanic down" i can think of so far
