Sometimes sinners just lose out on screentime during parts of the story. It's not that big a deal really just unfortunate that it happened right after Hong Lu's Canto. It's possible that the collab took even more away from him and Ryoshu as far as development goes too since Canto 9 just kinda HAPPENED instantly with no real buildup. KJH sucks at character balance which is why he has to make Meursault and Outis start getting some character development now since he refused to do it every other canto. The downside of having a 13 character roster I suppose.

Story wise we finished buffing Xichun, went to fantasy land for the collab that was all a dream and then Canto 9 starts and its instantly like "hey go here now now now" which is fine enough but an abnormal start for a Canto. It didn't have a "smooth" transition like most of them have had so far since there wasn't an intervallo leading into it like usual.My only real gripe with the Canto, aside from the IDs we've gotten so far, is that part 2 felt like part 1.5 and part 3 feels unironically like potential capeslop. They're gonna have to put in a lot of legwork to make our sinners actually matter in the next part since we're bringing along so many heavy hitters and they still have to flesh out Ryoshu too since she didn't get a whole lot of substance in the first two parts really. So looking at the leaks for Rien's fight, I noticed he doesn't have the usual locks for his own weapon that the Index usually has. He also doesn't have a cloak. And going by some of the comments in Sora's profile, both the cloak and weapon are powered by the Prescripts. Even Sora's ego is locked and only unlocked once she fulfills Prescripts in battle. Something is seriously off with him as an Index member.

I just had a passing thought. What if Shiomi wanted Ryoshu to hate her from the start, which is why she had that triumphant laugh when she cut off her tongue? She wasn't being a meanie cause she was a spiteful asshole, but because she hoped Ryoshu would run away one day, and so she never relented on the mental abuse to give her not reason to hesitate against her. Ryoshu was even weirded out when she saw her laughing so happily after getting her tongue sliced.Maybe it could be an Ayin type situation where she didn't really want to do that, but she saw no better option, hence why she asked Ryoshu to look away and not see her face, cause she was trying not to show hesitation when she talked down on her.
