If you just want cool moments of spectacle and getting to learn more about the City then it's fine, but for people who go in wanting to see characters struggle to grow and introspect on their sins, Canto 5 and 8 are lacking with the former squeezing all of it in the Whale and the latter relying on contrivances like the Daiyu flashback beam. When someone says a Canto is shit they usually just mean they don't like the way its corresponding Sinner was handled rather than the events of the Canto as a whole. Fucking around on the lake and the Hierarch Evaluation dungeon crawl or Lei Heng fight were both really fun but don't really do much narratively on the whole. They're just plot beats, if entertaining and obviously well made and quality ones.
