Indie games use the same tired old tropes endlessly. I can't even differentiate half the side scroller games people make anymore. There's even a indie game on gamepass that almost completely rips off nuclear throne but makes it a half-assed ARPG..

The cool looking games always end up just being experimental projects that never turn into games either..

Another problem is the games usually don't have a "vision". They don't feel like there is passion behind them, it feels like they create the game mechanics first out of an experimental stage and then they have to be assed to create a world and levels behind it. Every indie game ends up being completely unmemorable and soulless compared to their retro counterparts for this reason..

Devs need to learn how make games from the ground up with every aspect already down on paper, with a cohesion between all aspects of the game to form a "whole". Instead I feel like im just playing someones hobby project that they fucked around with until they got it working..

Very little Progress today, but I visualized the BSP Tree of a sample Level a bit, in order to find some more Issues to fix up, Triangles that lie coplanar to the splitting Plane are now properly pushed into their Children, and Tree generation stops earlier then before, resulting in a lot less Leafs, with a lot less singular Triangles in them.
Now I just need some more cleanup, a few Triangles are flipped the wrong Way around, and some Vertices and triangles are doubled up and need to be removed. And the BSP Tree needs to be expanded on generation so I can utilize the same algorithm to export the rendering BSP and Collision BSP.
After that I can finally move on to PVS calculations and pushing this into the Engine I think.
Pic related, all the currently still existing Geometry, the splitting Planes and the "connected" Level, and the Level split into Leafs for visualization purposes.

This. I'm still surprised anons think 10 reviews = get noticed. It's not, it's more like 10 reviews worth of sales wherein 10 reviews equates to 400 sales. Yesterday I was planning on doing art, but I first wanted to check whether some important feature I was planning was even viable and I ended up implementing half of it. That's how it often is, something that looks complex turns out to be easy while some seemingly tiny bug eats up weeks of your time.

Yep. Those pushing AI are probably funded by AI companies trying to addict people so as to push their own metrics up for more financing. And of course cult like mentality type people who attach themselves to it because "I need to be a part of something bigger than myself anything except religion tho!"

AI can be useful but it is nowhere near as useful as those with the cult like mentality over it. There is just no way it can make me consistent usable art for a full game. If I tried making a game of that size there would just be too many issues with the game's art consistency onoy to get worse when it comes to animating every single thing needing an animation. And then there's code, anything too complex and it just doesn't quite get it done right only for it lead you in a pointless trail of failing to fix the issue. Nah no thanks I can just pay an artist to make my art for me rather than get duped into spending thousands on AI art and only have a few pieces because I wasted $200 trying to gen one piece of art over and over with random issues in it. As for code I'd probably have better luck taking anything too complex from someone posting their code online or just paying someone to do that one specific set of code I can't. Much easier this way. But yeah I've seen the AI art general before, it can be neat. But for actual gamedev, it's too limited and just looks like a gamification of how it works in an attempt to get people to just keep trying cause it looks so close to getting what you want out of it.

I used to be really against AI but a good friend of mine showed me that you can use AI coding assistants to get quite far, if you then know to fix things by hand. That said, I absolutely do think that making yourself a company's slave for life is a bad idea. If you can't stand on your on two feet, when everyone is like you, the company will just soak up all the profit it can and you will be left effectively making minimum wage. Even if AI does everything promised, if you don't control the model, you're signing up to be cattle!

I'm less certain about art, since there are local models. That said, I've chosen to draw myself, because for whatever reason, I feel like the results feel better. Call it a cope if you want, but I really do feel like there's something there. Maybe it's how I try and fail to draw things, and through that process, accidentally stumble upon new ways to draw them. Maybe it's the line-level control, or being able to tune color intelligently across sprites to make sure that enemies that show up in a particular environment complement it. Maybe it's the symbolism in character design.

I'm sure you can use an AI for all of that to some degree, but it's actually hard work! So much so that just drawing the thing might be easier. That said, I could be wrong.

As the guy who is making a VN with strictly AI art, I CAN vouch for this statement. There will always be a tiny bit of inconsistency with the art. Doubly so for minor features like piercings or emblem designs (pic rel). The only way for me to avoid that is to either simplify a character's design, or to manually edit my art.

look at the capsule for any successful indie. Stardew is just the logo over some nicely arranged game assets. Same for Factorio. Undertale's is literally just the word "Undertale" on a black background.
The average dev is spending 800 bucks on a capsule for a couple hundred reviews, just to get mogged by some ugly shit like this. If your game is good, people will search for it. If the theme is interesting, it can be easily conveyed with a name and some basic background art. If you're relying on people being impressed by the quality of the capsule art to sell your game, you've already lost.

Yeah that's a big gripe I have with it. I've seen neat AI art before but for a game it is simply way too big of a hassle. I like designing characters, writing and composing music and I want to put what it all somewhere so I bought the RPG Maker MV/MZ bundle, probably going to use MZ. But I’ve got little knowledge of and am shit at game design or what makes a game ‘good’, little dev experience and don’t understand coding at all despite repeated attempts, is it worth even attempting to make a proper RPG or just keep it as walk-and-talk story slop like Yume Nikki or the incest game?
I want it to more of an actual game than a VN and have some kind of action so I can make intense battle themes that wouldn’t fit in a VN/game like Yume Nikki but if it’s going to be shit then I won’t bother. It’s just me working on it too. I could try to make it a different genre but I don’t know what genre and if it can be accomplished in the RPG Maker engine.

This video explains a core ingredient to fun.

A good game is subjective, but to me it has to be more a team effort between the music, the story, the characters, the graphics, the gameplay.

One thing to remember, is don't try to make non violent, non combat games.

While is fun to think that combat is something you want to get rid, the end result is boring, unless you use a timer or other tricks.

In the end a game, is nothing but an obstacle race from the starting position, where the heroe is new to the world, and learn skills and tricks, get newer friends and unlock secrets that allow him to become stronger up to a point where he can defeat the big evil.

To me combat vs no combat is like having salad, rice and a good steak.
In the end both the steak is necesary, but also a steak without salad and veggies, is a much poorer dish.

As for what combat to have, a good rule is to follow arcade combat design, like metal slug or classic shmups.

In the end, your player shouldn't win at first try, but have a fair change to overcome the dangers by trying multiple times, until you can succeed because you have mastered the rules of the game.

Too easy is boring, but also too dificult is not good, so is good to have a main easy path, but also alternative more dificult endings.

To be fair I am focusing more on the music, story and characters than gameplay, the graphics will probably just be pixelart but I’ll try to make it look pretty at least. It's demoralizing, because real gamedevs have to scroll through pages of nonsense that they know no real gamedev has the time to sit around typing.

No gamedev sits around typing ideas for games into a thread, so when you realize the thread is basically full of nodevs you realize you're in the wrong place.

RPGs are a multi-decade old genre, so if you're going to do one you either need to do it insanely clean to the point of being remarkable (hard even for some industry veterans), revive a lost style of them that at this point will feel new and fresh (see Undertale to Mother 3), or do something novel which is both hard to come up with and hard to balance because you have no path to follow. That isn't me saying you shouldn't try it, but that's the path you have to walk if you do want to do it. Otherwise, you may as well just treat it more like a VN. That will require you be a good writer but that was probably the case for making a remarkable RPG anyway.

Betz here. Believe me I'm going to give it my all this year. I have a strategy in mind to try and get an audience off board and I've already talked about this with a couple of the production team but this year's going to be very different in terms of presentation. Not to go into a wall of text here but I do have this feeling that we're sort of hitting a ceiling with 4chan being our primary audience But on the flip side it's very hard to gain an audience that isn't 4chan due to the stigma with the site. I understand that the stigma is not as bad as it used to be but it is still there and you cannot convince me that it doesn't negatively affect people's perception of anything relating to it.

Hell I even asked someone who works with a publisher If they would be interested in helping promote the game and I was told no because they don't want to have a connection to the site. So part of what I'm trying to do this year is to find the balance between the two to where I don't alienate the 4chan audience but I don't push away the rest of the internet. Genuinely might be an impossible task but I'm still going to attempt it. We'll see if it pays off.

I'm welcome to feedback that anybody else has regarding this. As to why we're doing the game jam I'm not the one directly running it I'm just helping out.

There's a huge portion of the userbase and culture on other sites especially twitter and reddit and especially after the hack. So there's no real stigma anymore except for people who literally refuse to go anywhere else on the internet. aka uncs

He will never do that. In fact he won't even raise it because the low cost benefits him. He won't set the price TOO low because you risk flooding Steam with even more slop, which would start to seriously damage Valve's reputation, and they're VERY careful with their reputation.
$100 is the sweetspot where the floodgates are open so you can make millions on shovelware every year whilst at the same time it's not too much that gamers start realising there's a problem.
Gaben doesn't give a shit about the quality of the offerings on his store. All he gives a shit about is money.
