The only thing Reverie makes better is Rean's incomplete character journey. It leaves him in a spot where he can at least start to earnestly work towards happiness and self-acceptance. Whether you think it was great or not it still did that duty well. It gave explanations and even more monologues for what they thought of Osbornes plan and crusade. Lecters was the one that was much needed. Learning Osbornes plan was good to to clarify the confusing bits from cs4 in his daydream.

Grimwood was okay in reverie but not as fleshed out as the ironbloods and Rean and ash(daydream).

Of course the real life reason is that Falcom obviously forgot such a minor NPC at the time of making CS4, but it is an odd situation in-universe to say the least. There's a whole bunch of little oddities like that that Reverie explains, or little character arcs that are concluded since Cold Steel 4 didn't have time for them in the main story.

I think having Rean, ash, and ironbloods end after the twilight and Great War makes sense. Showing Erebonia actually being able to “change” was part of the themes of the arc. Well you said my piece for me regarding the Aida thing. To me Reverie is the very clear result of the extremely bloated writing the CS arc has. You had more of a point with Lechter, if anything, as his motivations were mostly left up in the air. Sometimes I feel that mystery makes characters more interesting, and that is especially true for whimsical characters like Lechter. So even if it isn't true for me, I can concede and admit knowing Lechter's motivations can enhance IV for some people. Albeit I admit that with the caveat it is a minimal and very small enhancement.

In CS3/4 Osborne looks like a total idiot for plunging the world into war just so he can bait Ishmelga into the world to kill it. The issue was that Ishmelga was basically harmless aside from prompting one bad incident every few decades or so. The cure (world war) was worse than the disease (the curse).

In Reverie, Ishmelga's return is a far more active and present threat to Zemuria. The whole plot with the Retributive Tower and draining the spirit veins to fire off superlasers is the sort of real, practical threat that makes Osborne's planning and callous actions over decades actually justified.

Sure, I agree. These are issues it could have tackled had Rean's rescue come about quicker, but oh well. And for what it's worth I did enjoy that aspect of the game.

Again, we simply disagree on the Ishmelga Rean point. You can put whatever asterisk next to it you want but to me, he should not have come back as Ishmelga whatever. Even if his defeat was simple. I don't think it should have been called CS5 because the conflict as it pertains to Rean felt forced. A lot of Reverie's main plot did. In that sense I think 4 did a better job. The character writing and character moments is were Reverie shines. But to me Lapis, Nadia, Swin, and the SSS trying to free Crossbell are the main pieces.

And I don't think people are particularly confused on what is or isn't Erebonia's "last story." For one, I have never seen anyone in good faith or otherwise say Reverie should be skipped. Unlike Sky 3rd.

Rufus had an unneeded redemption. The main engines of that story where Swin, Nadia and Lapis. You could switch Rufus with just about anyone, and they'd make sense. Hell even Cedric would have fit the bill nicely.

My point is that the bare essentials of the story are Lapis coming to life via a Singularity, and Elysium trying to make Crossbell a superpower again via Robo Rufus. Crossbell's liberation is again the focus of the story. Don't get me wrong, I really liked the Nord section of Rean's story but his involvement in the main plot because of Ishmelga Rean was simply a vehicle for him to give his speech of having a duty to be happy. Lapis connects with Swin and Nadia more organically as they are children, and the dollhouse incident really ruins what would have been a cheesy but special moment between Lapis and Rufus, and it rubbed me the wrong this makes Lapis become 100% Rufus-brained.

Obligation doesn’t necessarily mean you’re forced to or pretending or lying. An obligation can mean you have a duty to or it’s a genuine belief of a code.

For example, If I have an obligation to take care of my mother when she’s sick, it doesn’t mean I don’t genuinely want to help her. It just means as a son and as someone who she took care of as a child I have an obligation(a duty or rule) to help her back. That obligation can come for loving that person and caring for them not being forced. An obligation is something you make for yourself.

Sky, a game I love. does all this. the problem that Cold steel had is as I repeat over and over, the stakes. Just look at renne.
