Over the course of the game, through dialogue and the OST, it's more or less implied that he's realizing that while he and sonic and different, they do have similar goals. This leads him to becoming closer, whether he likes it or not, to sonic, and by the end they're pretty much what you could call friends. Ironically, knuckles' relationship with sonic almost mirrors his relationship with rouge. Like sonic gave knuckles multiple chances, knuckles gives rouge an unusual amount of grace considering she not only stole the emerald but attempted to seriously hurt, possibly even kill him. He avoids fighting her during their first encounter, and seems to attempt deescalation prior to their actual showdown. The difference though is that while sonic and knuckles are friends, it's hinted that knuckles reluctance to harm rouge might have a shades of romance. Whether or not his behavior towards rouge is due to sonic rubbing off on him or conflicting emotions is up to interpretation, but I choose to believe it's probably a bit of both.Anyways, if knuckles was meant to have any rival post-adventure it was rouge, but team dark and "team sonic" sort of precluded an ongoing rivalry from ever establishing itself seeing as how their duties now are to orbit the hedgehogs.
