I've always liked this piece of art a lot in terms of "edgy serial killer Sunny" art, it balances out the edginess with sadness and the cute Headspace friends showing his delusion

It's really tough to tell you outright.
Games are such a large skill and the industry is getting rocked hard just like other software, that you gotta specialize in something, because there's programming, art & animation, sound design, game design, project management, marketing, so much crap that goes into it. Whatever you're disciplined enough to do day after day is probably the one.

From a computer science perspective I'd assume you're pretty decent at programming, so maybe play with Unity / Godot / Unreal and make small prototypes while you get used to it. Join game jams, find a community, etc etc
Videogames can mostly be boiled down to FSM state machines for most logic if you're not doing anything spectacular.

Honestly, I'm working on this as a hobby project while I try to find a job after class myself. Some really, really weird shit happened and i dropped out of a game design course at the last semester, but this ain't my story.

If it's a matter of survival you take any job you can find and cling onto it for life, or shill AI solutions at local business, make garbage AI games to flood the mobile market, whatever you can.

But if it's a matter of passion, start with small games, solve things, always try new solutions, always keep learning, and if all else fails, lock yourself away and slave at something for years even if it's a completely ineffective way of doing it, because all the tools and skillsets in the world don't replace making and shipping fucking games (Or tools & assets to make games) lmao

Any more precise questions because I feel like this wasn't a good answer lol

I have been in the industry since 2020
Omori is what inspired me to get into indies
But all ive been caught on is endless drama and unsolicited advices.
Im shit at programming too btw its been years and i cant do anything on top of my head
I cant seem to build trust and cordial relationship with anybody and no matter what i do i either get hated or ignored by the community.

Tried pixel art, didnt stick around
Tried unity, didnt stick around
Tried QA, didnt stick around

I wonder how those artist makes a living without opening commissions

>If it's a matter of survival you take any job you can find and cling onto it for life, or shill AI solutions at local business, make garbage AI games to flood the mobile market, whatever you can.
Assooooming i get hired in the first place lol. Ever since november 2024 i have sent like 250 applications already. From dishwasher, to store clerk, to IT helpdesk, to webdev, nothing works despite doing so much take home tests and taking on interviews.

I have some job experience of course and yet i have seen there are lot more people with more grit, accomplishments, and talents than me having to accept very low paying job.

I dont want to do mind numbing shit anymore like AI and what not. That sounds bitter of you. My brain is just not wired for dishonesty

Most don't.
>I have some job experience of course
Experience in what? If it's not relevant to what you're applying for, DO NOT mention it, it just makes you look desperate. Mention instead projects, interests, or something like that that you CAN fit into the role.
>I dont want to do mind numbing shit anymore like AI and what not.
You really should take whatever you can get in your situation.

Oh, yeah I always sound like a doomer that's just me

The game industry is suprisingly small and relations matter, I've met a suprising amount of "big names" I never thought I would have just by asking them and finding out they're normal people.

So the social skills and inability to make cordial relationships might sadly be an issue, sometimes it really just does feel like everybody's wearing a mask and we all pretend we don't.

If you've been working in the games industry since 2020, you've got to have some kind of shipped games or portfolio by now, yeah? I relate to using the idea of making something you love as an excuse to get up, a lot of people can.

A hard one to swallow is that it can also be the kind of people you're hanging out with, when you say 'Indies' that can mean anything from poorly socialized internet rejects causing drama to misunderstood artists making art pieces to people trying to just engineer hit games asap. Hang around people making stuff you want to make.

One of the newer trends is validating the concept of a game with a community as fast as possible. For example, the project I'm working on has some fans interested in its niche that's on the upswing, so while I'm not gonna make gangbusters, I think I found a fun niche that aligns with my passions.

And if you can never find out what your next action is, sometimes the best solution is to take action and gain info that way. Make a game, advertise it, figure out what went wrong. Shill your portfolio, learn what you need, keep grinding. And if you think I'm wrong, I'm not gonna disagree because the problem is I don't know shit either. Nobody truly does. Especially in independent games. There's always the gamble.

Cool
One one forum i get told "interviewers can tell you're using AI for your project" and in this one i get told "just use AI bro"
I want to be happy with what im good that. Is that not allowed anymore after 2025?

>shipped games
Only one. And thats not even a game. I made a terrain generator using a procgen algorithm and someone else coded it for me. I wrote the paper, someone did the actual programming.
Nowadays i just draw random shit i guess, fishing for illustrator / concept art jobs. Ive been thinking of making chat stickers and emotes.

>Hang around people making stuff you want to make.
I have been booted out of two job centric discord servers. One is workwithindies, and one is the biggest community in my country and i think my name has been black listed because everyone there is an elitist. Not only that they know my real name too on facebook.

It's fucked because my relationship with that community has been very back and forth. If i get my ass into a community i mostly rant / vent about my daily drama with my parents, and each time i post art or asking for help with my programming issues, they vaguepost me and being passive aggresive.
>>
>>553855172
>I vent about issues with my parents
It sounds like you've got an issue of work/life balance, finding close trusted friends to talk shop with is different than talking about it with coworkers, which sucks because the boundaries blur the more everybody gets shoved into group chats and business groups. Nobody wants to work with somebody if they end up as a free therapist, even if ya need it. Even /omog/ used to be free therapy for people it shouldn't have.

Anyways, this is getting incredibly off topic for /omog/ so I'm probably gonna call it here unless there's anything more specific

Just remember there's not any one size fits all way to make it in any industry, AI or not, take notes of indie devs or people you admire, the advantages and disadvantages they had compared to you (and how to close the gap), how they market themselves, implementing research papers is good for a career portfolio in technical art and tools but nothing beats shipped games, the unfun part of trying to make this a career is the business side all while trying to keep your skills developed. All while you're still trying to pretend the experience of skinnerbox videogames are what make you get up in the morning after you've dissected them to the point of science.

But I'm a doomer. Just... Make games. Ship em. Market em. Learn from it. If you're making indie games, that's all you can do.
