It's HEADON pulse doppler, so it's tuned to be very sensitive towards detecting targets that are approaching you but it is absolute ass at detecting anything flying away from you. The headon PD on the F-14s and F-4S is bad enough at locking opponents from behind that you don't even need to carefully notch them. Instead you basically just need to turn around and go cold and the HDN PD filter will drop its spaghetti.The F-15E has a better PD filter that is more capable of detecting targets that are flying away from you. It's been a while since I've flown the tomcat. I think if you cycle radar modes, that it should have an ordinary SRC mode that will detect those targets just fine. However SRC doesn't have the bells and whistles of a TWS mode, and it is vulnerable to chaff and ground clutter.

What matters is the rate that the TARGET is moving. It doesn't matter if you're standing still or traveling at mach-9000. What matters is if the target is approaching you or not. Because it's the radar filter that is looking at all of the returns, taking note of your own airspeed, and using the doppler effect to filter out returns that aren't approaching you.Yes you're flying at that Su-25 really fast. You're also flying at that mountain really fast. But neither the mountain or the notching Su-25 is approaching you, so the computer filters them both out.
