And then it comes and goes so fast that I could only appreciate the animation after a rewatch (not that I'm shitting on anyone who enjoyed their first-time experience of it. Good for you, I'm honestly kind of jealous). I don't know how much of this was because I spoiled the surprise beforehand or because the writing gave it almost zero support. But in general it felt like most of the plot was just disappointingly lukewarm and unfocused without giving proper buildup for its payoffs. Like with Yuki and Asuna, the most we got was Yuki being sad back in part 1 and her looking worn the fuck out and getting pissed off at the doctor lady. Or with the scene when Yuki cried over the captain in part 1, where in isolation it's fine, but in context it felt unearned because the connection between them wasn't convincing at all, especially when the captain is so fucking lame.It's pure wasted potential. You have Yuki who at her core is a deeply passionate character, with a top tier jp VA who's fantastic at conveying her passion, and you have a dramatic setup, but the execution isn't there. It makes me think if an alternative wouldn't be better like you can make operatives who kept close enough proximity with you keep their memory or recover it fully afterwards (I'd also like to get you guys' thoughts on how an alternative could work).In that respect, I prefer how the current story doesn't lean on memory loss. But I would have liked to have preserved at least some of the focus and connection.
