I'm forced to admit that ENTERclair and Kaiser Greg got me good, but cramming basically all of Ryoshu's emotional moments to the end just didn't let it hit as hard as it could. Director just needs to stop with the backloading shit honestly, Canto 6 wasted no time setting the stakes and providing intrigue and it's still bare minimum considered a Top 2 Canto no matter where yo ask.

I hope by next canto either the power of enemies goes down so we can fight then properly or LCB gets a big power spike so PM feel okay with letting the sinners beat someone on the level of Valencina at least. You can't just have every big enemy get handled by someone else or a sudden powerup forever.

Part 2 was pretty bland by comparison, it honestly felt like a 1.5 more than a 2 to me and the Limvengers was corny.Part 3 was mostly hype moments and aura. Most of the fights were just watching your npc teammates kick the enemies teeth in and then you had to go back to Ryoshu's team and deal with those fuckers. Ryoshu didn't really get to do much in the grand scheme of things so a lot of narrative weight was carried through flashbacks which is pretty cheap. I liked the Nursefathers and 3/5 of the apprentices and Greg and Sinclair had pretty cool moments but they honestly overshadowed Ryoshu heavily I think. Sora and 5head served no real purpose. Ryoshu didn't get enough development with Araya. Rien was a fun fight but a poor final boss and the Mili song was lackluster. The real nail in the coffin is it looks like she's going to be back to status quo which is honestly tiresome at this point.

Man every fucking thing I learn about the Smoke War makes it seem like an even worse nightmare than I presumed it was beforehand. I remember thinking it was just a big war between two standing regular armies with some mercenaries. Then I remembered taboos of the City still apply, which means that attempts to circumvent firearms laws are punishable even during the war, any elements bleeding into the Backstreets are subject to the Sweepers AND Property Damage rules during the conflict, and these motherfuckers still need to pay their taxes. All of the while we have a conflict involving some incomprehensibly massive army of G-Corp insect-soldiers backed by multiple other corps and fixers, but the guys in the G-Corp military were apparently backed by kaiju-sized superbugs and three legendary insect abominations that were the kind of nightmare that churns horror in some grizzled and generally fearless roughneck like Valencia, and the guys AGAINST those bugs were apparently armed well enough that they could respond in kind. Seeing GreGOD transforming into Roach Emperor was another harrowing revelation, as he literally did not even tap into the full unrestricted might of what was under the hood (explicitly he was holding as much back as he physically could), and the others of his kind more than likely were dumping their maximum prowess into that arena. It honestly makes sense that every single vet of this war, to a man/woman, was traumatized and scarred to this day about how fucking awful it was. The idea of either swinging a longsword at a rapidly moving buzzing cockroach-man as he starts shredding your corporate-sponsored comrades-in-arms apart or trying to lob a grenade into a pack of them and getting flagged as a fucking taboo-violator and having some Claw rip your head off at lightspeed is fucking nutty.

The second part is a good buildup with introduction to new chars that will help us in part 3 as well as increase stakes with the reveal at the end of the part. It also give the palyers enough theories to predict who Ryoshu's child is. Part 3 is a blast with us having named NPCs fighting alongside us against adversaries that are much too strong for us to fight alone. We get to see more of the sinners' character in this canto as well. Except for Honglu who I think only had a few lines here and there for some reason. I enjoy the gimmicks, the kit of the named NPC, the new flavour text under passive and skills expanding upon their characters, and the insert songs are insanely good. I love how each nursefathers were written and how they treat Ryoshu and their apprentices. Though there are some parts that left much to be desired but all in all it's a great canto that does not fall short compared to our previous cantos.

I think Rien's story, in it's totality, is actually fairly gripping and tragic, but fuck me it was basically shoved into flavor text and a few CGs in the LAST TWO NODES of the entire fucking Canto, leaving you to pick up on mere crumbs that were scattered in Part 1 and 2 in hindsight. The one thing I'll concede is that the "Araya being Shiomi" twist was an effective (if predictable) and incredibly compelling plot development, but while it successfully helped frame her current circumstances and attitudes towards Ryoshu, for the past that built up to this moment, we only got a smattering of genuine scenes between the two in Part 3 after getting chopped up snippets before, which I feel led to some last-minute clunky expositing like with Shiomi's special blood and the Time Vault Entanglement. It just made it hard to get as invested as I could've been.

She didn't need to kill Valencina/Matthias/Callisto for her arc, she already fucked them up once and wasn't coming for revenge. She's not part of the group fighting those 3, but they all came with scenes elaborating on how they raised/abused her and in the end their characters are so tied together that development for 1 is development for the other. It feels weird to pretend that just because Greenclair killed Callisto, Vespa/Moses killed Matthias, and Roachman killed Valencina that that invalidates what they meant to Ryoshu's character. She as greg said in the arknights collab "had her shit together". She was overall a good mom and the thing which caused her to screw up with Araya was the one time we see her project herself onto Araya whether she knew it or not.She did not have to face herself in any challenging way like every other sinner before her. There was a reason her first reaction to it being her turn was excitement, she was ready to do so. I enjoyed the canto being more of a boss rush. I liked that there was a focus on the sinners being split up with help from support units. I did not find any fight particularity hard and I beat everything in either 1 or 2 tries. I think they should have kept verg's stats the same as in canto 6 but I guess something more than "roll stupid high" is more interesting.
