I much prefer Fallout's style of having skill checks outside of combat be thresholds instead of dice rolls. It doesn't actually make much sense that Cassia with 85 Awareness would just not look at someone's tattoo. People say stuff like "you're just having an off day" or whatever if you fail, but that's not really how that works, so it's an unsatisfying explanation. And it gets even worse with stuff like hacking a computer or picking a lock, because those are practiced skills, and if a person is familiar with that particular lock or that particular operating system's security measures, then it is absolutely not a matter of luck top access it, it's just a matter of time. Which is the crux of my problem with dice based skill checks in games, it's not actually a matter of luck most of the time. You either know a lock/computer operating system/whatever, or you don't. You either have the prerequisite 70 Computer skill value on your character sheet, or you don't. Hackers don't just sit at a computer and start typing random gibberish to see if they get lucky. So when I play Fallout 3/NV/etc and they have the exact system I prefer, it tells me that some game developers feel the same way. In those games speech and all skills are treated as thresholds, and it's exactly the same idea I have.Rolling dice for skill checks is a sacred cow that gamers hold on to despite the fact that it contradicts realism, and half the time it just makes you feel bad when your 85 Awareness character just misses something obvious like a tattoo, or your hacker Pasqal accidentally hits the wrong key when hacking a mundane terminal. In real life, you don't get a magic button to mind control people into killing themselves once you've put enough points in [Speech] or CHA. The "realistic" model is a hybrid where the chance of success is non-deterministic and non-linear. Players should feel rewarded for specialization, but with the caveat of diminishing returns (e.g., 10 in a skill = 70% chance of success, 20 in a skill = 90%), so they don't feel bad about distributing points elsewhere. But that is probably hard to tune, unless you're called Josh "balanced" Sawyer. Because a hybrid, "realistic" approach isn't that preferable, most games default to either [Skill X] or dice rolls. It is what it is.

You increase your skill and get fucked over with no chance of recovery.In combat, if you roll and fail and miss, you can recover. The fight isn't decided in one roll, but dialogues are. If you fail a check, it's the opportunity is gone and done. Threshold means you are consistently rewarded dor making a build specialising in that skill.

Mainly it just reduces item dependencies. 18/00 is less amazing with so many Girdles of 19+ Strength running around by then. I agree Sarevok has good S/D/C (The rest is irrelevant) but if I'm including a pure fighter I'm probably going to prefer Korgan's +5 shorty saves from being a 19 Con Dwarf. And Caster/Fighter hybrids are of course way stronger in a manner that far outways stats. Still I'd personally say Sarevok is just "good." He's certainly better than Minsc for example, but he is not optimal by any means.
