Story setting wise they are very close, obviously they are not exactly the same but no story is but I feel more inspiration from KC in the setting than any other game that I know of. If there are similar modern games that have that setting it's because they actually did copy Kancolle as well. I'm not sure if Kancolle is the first to use this setting but they are definitely one who popularized it.
