If you want to prevent a canon event you have to keep traveling back and retconning things until you end up on a different timeline. A group of friends kept having fun changing the timeline by sending text messages back to the past, until it ended with CIA shooting their friend. The one guy kept going back in time to save her but it always kept ending up the same, she keeps dying at the same time each timeline, it didn't matter how it occurred, the fact it occurred couldn't change. The only way to prevent it was to go back and retcon every time they fucked up and changed the timeline, undoing everything they did to muck things up. Until they're left with a hard choice because of what the original thing they did to change the timeline was, they have to save their friend or save their other friend because one of them dies in each timeline as an absolute event.
