So looking back in Canto 9, I think it's the Canto you need to reread the most to really appreciate it. It has so many moments that make much more sense once you've read the story. I guess it's why Ryoshu appreciates the negative space.

The bad ending was his destiny per the law of the City. But, he escaped that cycle. And he escaped the City, meaning he is no longer beholden to the circle of Karmic Consequence.The God of the Index foresaw this, so it created someone to bear that Karma in Roland's stead. Rien was made into a replica of Roland so that somebody would be forced to pay the misery that Roland owes.The Index is the lesson Roland learned in LoR made manifest - This is that, and that is this. Everything is connected, and everything will be paid for.

Now that it took some time to ruminate in my mind I think canto 9 was overall pretty good. Despite the *hype* and *aura farming* moments, the story bits about Ryoshu, Araya and Rien gave me a much better lasting impressions of this canto and will be the things that I remember fondly of them. Unfortunately I wish I could say the same about canto 8.
