"Merging" the timelines or at least finding a better middle ground always seemed like the best thing to me.. The thing Max would actually do because at that point she's already well deep into the 'I'm psychologically fucked no matter how this plays out' rabbit hole The original game forces the choice like it's now or never, and Max is going to lose the power for good.
