>What the heck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as A Hat in Time, Animal Well, Baba Is You, Balatro, Battle Brothers, Cave Story, Celeste, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkest Dungeon, Darkwood, Dead Cells, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Hades, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Hotline Miami, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Loop Hero, Machinarium, Monster Train, Noita, Nuclear Throne, OFF, OneShot, Rain World, Shovel Knight, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, The Witness, Void Stranger, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle, roguelite, shmup, 4x / RTS / city-builders, and RPGMaker games are cool too.

Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

if I may interject for a moment, asking genuinely from someone who doesn't care about vtaters
that clip just isn't as inherently funny as you promised it would be
it's an animation of an anime dog girl looking at fire in a beaker saying "water into fire, not understand!" with a very heavy accent
I'm not aware if Is she is doing a character or if this is her regular voice
what is there to find funny in that clip
are you amused by her reaction
I can only imagine someone thought this was the epitome of modern comedy to warrant actually animating that to give it context, given that the original would just have been the vtuber avatar talking about something she was playing

this isn't even the undiagnosed autism talking, there is nothing amusing about this clip or the minecraft one

I will remain completely and utterly unable to understand what compels people to watch these things, and I think a lot of other people feel similarly about this

Yeah that's the thing I thought about, how do you even go about this and make sure you actually get a team of competent devs together and manage to focus in on a tight vision without constant scope creep.
Because according to Wikipedia a game like GTA V had an estimated (inflation adjusted) budget of 333 Million (including marketing), which would be chump change for a billionaire and I'm sure you could make some good shit on that budget.

Hard to say. I mean game development is difficult. fags with an agenda will tell you that all it takes is not to be woke, to make a good game but as you can see by "chad vs the gay nazis". there seems to be more to it than just not being a lefty.
I think shit video games are like shit movies: Nobody sets out to make something that is shit. Every shit project starts with good intentions. Everyone wants to make a good thing. But then comes the roadblocks: Publisher interference, Scope creep as you mentioned, not enough time for certain things, not enough money for certain things, good ideas that turn out to not work as well in actual gameplay, bad management, and lastly: good old "The people making it were just not as talented as they needed to be for this project".
The last one I think gets overblown all of the time. Like, The last rocksteady game not being a single player experience but rather an always online open world multiplayer looter shooter with battle passes and games as a service model gets blamed a lot on them being "woke" or whatever, which in turn means "they're leftie so they can't create something good". But if you ask me, it more clearly is a case of publishers forcing them to do that for greed reasons.
Like the Deus Ex reboot games. I doubt anyone in actually making the game thought selling skill points in an immersive sim for real money is a good Idea. That was publishers interference.
So I don't think we need a benevolent billionaire, so much as we need to fix the goal of the AAA game industry being to make "the most amount of money physically possible".
>>
>>554907524
>So I don't think we need a benevolent billionaire, so much as we need to fix the goal of the AAA game industry being to make "the most amount of money physically possible".
Well obviously the fantasy would be, that I am said benevolent billionaire and would get to make the games that I fantasize about in my head a reality.
I mean since we're already knee deep in wishful thinking land. I think if I woke up tomorrow with a couple hundred billion bucks to my name, the first challenge would be just assembling a dev team. It's not like you can just put out a job listing, saying you're paying 100 Million for a dev team and expect not to get scammed.
And the next problem, aside from what you mentioned, would just be to convey my vision to a team of creatives and have them execute it, while also being invested in it not feeling like their personal creative freedoms are being infringed on.
Probably best bet would just be to seek out indie devs I like, put a wad of cash on their table and ask if they'd be down for a brainstorming session
>>

Anon you can just ask for good idle games. You don't have to bait people to reply to you with them by saying idle games suck.
>>
>>554917735
idle games are great once you get past a certain point where you can just leave it in the background and let it do its thing, there are a couple of idle games I just leave for a year or two and then comeback, basically work on it for a month, complete the game and then find a new one. Though I'd say the idle games that cost money and try to bait you with monetization are a plague on the industry. Most if not all idle games should be free or cost very little.
>>
>>554919226
Plus I mean: There's many games that are "low effort" or "low challenge". Satisfactory has basically zero challenge, and is in essence an idle game. You set up producers, you wait for them to produce. even factorio is like this. Yeah you have bug raids, but lets be honest, you are a way bigger threat to the bugs than they are to you. From the start of the game you can just research shotguns and grenades and you'll be walking through nearby nests like fucking judge dredd. The sims is beloved, and the biggest challenge in that is to not have you sim piss themselves. So what's the difference? In the end it's just a different type of game.

I wish there were more interesting idle games. I've been going through Steam and itch.io and I think I played all the ones that may be fun for me. So I'm only left with the android games as a place I haven't looked for.
>>
>>554921757
Yeah, I'm always on the lookout for good new idle/incremental/clicker games, and sadly a lot of them are trash. It's even worse these days because the fact that they are incredibly easy to code with Ai, means the genre is hit just about the worst with vibe coded slop. (all these fags hoping for the downfall of the AAA industry thanks to vibe coders are in for the biggest fucking monkey paw of their life it happens). I've seen absolute fucking garbage. AI is great at putting the basics together, but it has no Idea what is reasonable balance. I've seen games that start out fine, and then suddenly to keep going you have to wait 20 minutes for no reason because your gain is too slow. (Imagine playing say Super Mario, but once you reach the flagpole you need to just sit there and wait 20 minutes). I've seen games where you can increase your production by +1, but the cost to do so doubles every upgrade, meaning within just a few upgraded you reach costs that you will not be able to make back up if you let the game running for YEARS. And don't get me started on the generic ass AI art. I could go on listing ways in which these games fucking suck and are unplayable.
As for games I've enjoyed: "Siegeturtle" was kinda nice but comes with a price tag. It's "okay" not too amazing, but kinda cute. "Upload Labs" is free and a pretty decent clicker, "LORED" seems promising but isn't out yet, Bloobs Adventure Idle is great if you want that skill grinding idle, The Gnorp Apologue is pretty fun and currently one of the most copied style games, Idle Colony is basically Gnorp but from a different perspective, Unnamed Space Idle is one of the best f2p's you're gonna find on steam.

Time Clickers is kinda fun, but it shits itself in the endgame. So does Time Warpers. The devs have a habit of starting games with great concepts that are incredibly fun to advance in, great pacing, great gains, and fun to watch, and then just piddle out.

I don't think the horrible balance is due to vibe coding(as some that vibe codes it simply is not possible), but intended balance to pad the fuck out of the game instead of making more content, which is a lot harder than +x^2.
I'm also sick and tired of the soft cartoony styles, warcraft was one of the worst things to happen to western games.
>>
>>554926476
No, I can tell the difference between padded balancing and ass backwards "The machine spit it out like this and I didn't use a singular fucking braincell to consider if this was playable or not" coding. Padded balance is, well, padded. You can tell that it takes a bit longer than it should, but it's still clearly something a human has created because it fits within a reasonable human time-span. The vibe code slop, you can tell because it quickly becomes "wow, this is WAY too long" and if you wait it out it becomes: "Oh this is IMPOSSIBLY long".
For instance: I recently played a game where you passively get +1 point per minute. To upgrade this to get another +1 per minute, it costs 1570 points. So if you had the points, the upgrade would pay for itself within just over 26 hours. And after you buy it, the praise for another 1+ becomes even steeper (by A LOT). No human balances this way. That's vibe coding balance. Because the machine doesn't get it. The machine doesn't know that this is unreasonable. And the lazy ass dev didn't bother to play his own god damn game without cheats to see if shit like this is in there. And you see this a lot. Games where you ask yourself: "Bro, have you even played your own game? This is absolutely unplayable". And the telltale sign is that usually the balance. Because the AI is great at making it look like a regular game, to make the UI and the getting around halfway decent, but the balancing requires that human hand that these devs lack.

That reminds me of the first and only vibecoded game I actually sat down to play. It was set up like one of those RPG battle idle games where you get items and level up and stuff, but the repeatable upgrades were like
>increase damage by 0.1%
>increase armour by 0.1%
>increase max life by 0.1%
>increase critical hit percent by 5%
>increase critical hit damage by 30%
>increase life regeneration by 10/sec (in a "game" where you start with about 30 max HP)
A mix of completely useless and completely overpowered upgrades that the "dev" couldn't even be bothered to fiddle with before putting the game up online.
>>
why is the fucking glass room brand so fucking hard to carve REEE
>>
>>554934386
apparently aside from credits changes they also tried updating the audio libraries and fucked it all up.
i can only assume that they tested the update for about 5 minutes before dumping it unto the world.

>We've had some problems with our audio library and attempted to update it to solve those problems. It seems that the updated version created its own problems, so we've reverted it back now.
is what they said on the steam discussions, I'm just the messenger.
they also said:
>As with any update we do, it'll come with some minor changes that build up over the years that haven't justified an update for their own sake. I don't have a change list of those small things, but none of it should impact gameplay in any meaningful way.
so there's a small bunch of tiny crap that is undocumented and apparently inconsequential for the end user except that it broke audio (and mods, allegedly)
frankly fucking off for 6 years and then coming back with a seemingly inconsequential zero-effort update seems worse to me than just leaving FTL in the fine, functional and feature-complete state it was before.
>>
>>554934887
Exactly what I mean anon. In vibe coded games you will get these completely outlandish balance Ideas that no human would ever come up with. No human brain would ever go: "okay if you grind this resource for 30 minutes, you get 0.01% to a stat you don't need". The only way a human would do that is if they were intentionally trying to make something unplayable. But you see it all the time in vibecoded shit.

Sound like peak chink game gameplay. Also shit like this is why I hated my entire experience with planet crafter, 90% of the time is spent waiting for the planet to improve because the ratio you get with the stuff you build is either abysmally shit or way too costly in materials for its worth for an upgrade that look good on paper but barely amount to shit.

Like by the time the planet was warm enough for all the ice to melt, I had explored the entire freaking map and had basically all the upgrades. Id have needed to basically idles for hours on end to finish the game proper, and screw that, might as well play anything else.

You seem to want to fight about it, again, you're allowed to not like something that is universally liked. I had a friend who didn't like Dark Souls, when I asked him why he said the deaths were "cheap" and I pointed out most of them are avoidable if you look for context clues and take your time. I also said that the game is teaching you that death isn't game over, giving up is as well.
He just ignored me, said the deaths were cheap, and that he didn't like the game. So then we did what normal people do and just moved on to something we both liked.
Say it with me: "It's okay to not like popular things."
>>
>>554951806
Because it's bait. Saying: "I didn't like silksong quite as much as Hollow Knight" is an opinion, opening with "Silksong is dogshit" is bait.
The game is different, you can like or dislike the difference, but saying it is "dogshit" is just objectively wrong. Hence the mocking replies.
But to be fair, /v/ and /vg/ anons in general have this annoying faggy habit of only accepting a game if it's basically flawless, and if they find anything that can be criticizes that instantly downgrades it to: "unplayable garbage slop".
10 Amazing!
9.5 great!
9. Okay
1-8: equally unplayable trash.
>>
>>554954494
>I pointed out most of them are avoidable if you look for context clues and take your time. I also said that the game is teaching you that death isn't game over, giving up is as well.
Just because a death is technically avoidable doesn't mean it's not cheap. Often even if you understand that a situation is dangerous that doesn't mean that you understand what the danger is.
Equally, just because the game is built around an underlying theme doesn't mean that the theme is well executed or enjoyable to experience. Fine, the game is teaching you that only giving up is game over - but if the way it teaches that is by being as frustrating as possible to challenge my patience and enjoyment then I'd rather not spend my free time in a lecture.

There are reasons to dislike dark souls which aren't just the 5 you've hand picked as being acceptable criticisms that still leave the game overall positive. The design choices made are inherently divisive, and in a lot of cases awkwardly executed in a way that clearly could have been less alienating to some players and improved the experience of players who stayed. The traps aren't always a reasonable example of that, but there are absolutely some that are just bullshit
>>
>>554955684
ah the IGN scale
>>
>>554955684
I'd unironically give it a 6, and even then that's not exactly a complete representation of my experience playing the game. It's not like I was constantly entertained - I spent the first 1/3 of my game bored, the next 1/3 really enjoying it, and the last 1/3 seething at the design choices. The whole game up until the citadel is a meandering waste of time. Exploration takes a million years and the end result is that the actual content the game has is just more spaced out, so even if there's more of it you spend a smaller fraction of your game engaging with it.
And people say the game is hard, but the difficulty is generally completely reasonable. I'm sure if I played it first I'd seethe, but I barely even died for until I got to the last judge. What's complete bullshit is how they try to make the game hard by making every single boss hit for 2 masks, cover 90% of the screen with hitboxes and then make the bosses vulnerable for like 2 frames after 20 seconds of floating on the upper corner of your screen. Oh, and then of course even when you can punish half the time isn't safe because there are 5 different attacks you can do which will punish you mid swing/mid pogo/mid heal. If you play with the beast crest you see the switch flip from when the bosses are reasonable to when they become bullshit around the midpoint of the citadel. Then you go back and beat the final boss in 30 seconds because she actually has to stand there rather than fucking off and hiding.

And then you have all of the bullshit around navigating the map. You go through the entire game mashing and humping every single wall just in case there's a hidden wall behind the foreground which covers 1/3 of the screen, and then it turns out you missed half a pixel so you have to do it all again. Oh, and more than a couple of times the hidden wall you know is there opens from 3 areas away via a switch. How they still don't have area based completion trackers in the game yet is completely beyond me.
>>
>>554955684
>>554957020
And I think the part that makes me the most frustrated is the cope. I watched a video from fans about groal that was like "actually no it's intentional that he's objectively, indefensibly, shit. It's because every game has a worst boss so he was picked as the worst!"
Like because the game has aspects that are fairly unique people fucking bend over backwards to pad any criticism of the game. Even if you enjoy the experience of finding secrets (and I say this as someone didn't look up anything until I got too pissed off and stopped caring in act 3) I can't imagine anyone actually enjoys the moment to moment experience of chasing 100% when there's so many fucking hidden walls and no reasonable way to find them. At least for a couple of the most bullshit ones they send you on quests which take you right to them, but how the fuck anyone is supposed to remember to go back to weavenest alta or find the wisp thicket on their first playthrough unless they're scouring the map I will never know
>>
>>554956661

>>
>>554956661
What happens when you die? Nothing, you drop your souls and that is it. You can go pick them back up, and if you passed a pain in the ass enemy only to die from an enemy ambushing you. Its on purpose to prevent the age of Japanese love of the grind, to then only sit on top of your souls and not use them. It's the game designers attempt to prevent grinding and overleveling.
>>
>>554957885
If I wanted to I could git gud at eating glass, or slapping contests, or dislocating my joints.
Or I could git gud at something which is actually enjoyable moment to moment and potentially even translates to something valuable IRL. Crazy, I know.
If the only thing enjoyable about dark souls is the fact that you can brag to losers on the internet about how good you are at dark souls, then that doesn't sound like a game that's worth anyone's time

>>554958112
>Nothing, you drop your souls and that is it.
The most valuable resource you have when you're playing a video game is your time. Saying it "just" cost you your souls is bullshit, because the actual mechanical effect that translates to in the game is either you eat shit and the game is way harder than it should be or you go back and grind to get back to the level the boss is built around.
And, regarding the game designers, if they wanted to prevent grinding then maybe don't add a level system? Maybe don't add infinitely renewable powerup resources and powerful equipment with low drop rates? Maybe actually remove grinding?

>Valve and everyone else involved with DMCA really has to fucking setup a system to confirm that the people launching the claim actually are who they say they are... And not some random fuckboi nigger trying to ruin people's days/weeks/months/years
They really don't. Submitting a false DMCA claim is already a crime, specifically: Perjury:
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/17/512
>(vi) A statement that the information in the notification is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, that the complaining party is authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.
The system in place to stop this behaviour is that it is literally a crime with a heavy fine and possible jail time. Because of this setup, companies dealing with DMCAs HAVE to honor them, or else they are putting themselves at legal risk. Essentially if they started ignoring spurrious claims, they would no longer legally protected as: "look dude, we just host this shit it's not our fault they uploaded your shit", they would then legally be responsible for distributing the material.

You know, I've started to realize I really like games that have this type of "physicality" to how they control. It does get frustrating when you want to make precise movements sometime, but having some the controls feel a little "sluggish" like the Helldivers weapon recoil or RDR2/GTA characters not snapping to a dead stop when you let go of the movement key does a lot of work in making those worlds feel more real

I reached IV tier in the Minecraft's modpack GTNH. Which was around 300 hours of playing. So I'm not really worried about it, I doubt the game even has that much content. Granted that GTNH needed 11ish years to have all that content.

50 hours in Siralim Ultimate, just entered depth 150 out of ? (probably infinite)
Still playing blind and I think the next big thing is going to be at over depth 200. I'm now at a stage where I have unlocked all of the basic base upgrade projects, most normal creatures, most spells, over half of the specializations and starting to get into prophecies/relics/masteries/cards.
This game is going to take a while.

Been trying new specializations but I keep coming back to witch doctor. It's just too good. Especially after nether boss Sarea. Its trait item (enemies attack each other before start of battle) finishes some battles before they even start.
Another great specialization I found is Shadowbringer, it focuses on Blighted debuff which turns healing into damage. But ultimately, making limited use of blighted as a witch doctor is much better than a full-on shadowbringer. Shadowbringer can end most battles during the first turn with a couple of spells that heal (damage) blighted enemies, but hard counters to blighted are relatively common. Witch doctor, on the other hand, has had only one hard counter so far: Nature Shapeshifters, which turn damage from friendly fire into healing. But that is easily countered with blighted, lol.

Also the most OP fused creature I've found so far is mimic + wisp watcher. Always acts first plus autocasts its 5(!) first spells on turn start. Enough to finish most fights on first turn start pretty much regardless of specialization, as long as your spec supports its spells.

Too bad it's mostly just backdrops and you can't really interact with any of it. It doesn't matter at all whether you're in the sewers or a spaceport or a busy spice market. Yeah, grammatical gender is fucking stupid and arbitrary to begin with. It's one of the things that takes non native speakers the longest to learn in my language (and I hang out with a lot of them). Because there is no rhyme or reason for it, you just have to learn the genders of a thousand words by heart unless you're a native and you just know the correct ones.

if your language isn't shit (it most likely is) then there are consistent, discernable rules that allow you to infer gender of the world without knowing context or anything about the word itself. it doesn't matter much for inanimate objects and just comes as an interesting side effect (that can be also used which can be cute sometimes when there are multiple different ways to refer to the same concept, you can use either female, male or neutral genders to give it a specific connotation), but then when referring to anything animate you have consistent rules, sentences flow much better and you generally pack more context into your speech increasing the information density which is always good

I'm talking about inanimate objects. I speak 3 languages that have grammatical gender and have vague knowledge of a few more and in all of them I don't know of any consistency when it comes to that.
Sure there are probably etymological reasons and you can sometimes tell by the suffix etc etc, but in my experience there is little reason why a table or a soon or food is male, female or neuter.
Do you have examples of languages where that isn't the case? I'm genuinely curious.

As a french frog, id say its more so it roll off the tongue easier and sound better to the ear, but there are a few cultural traits like how certain concepts are considered more or inherently feminine or masculine so it just come off as more proper, so ergo the specific gendered version feel more natural to use in a given context.

Ie "Le Port" aka "the port" sound good, while "La Port" make you sound like a dumbass and a listener may misunderstand what you're trying to say, thinking youre saying "la part" aka "the part (like the fraction of a thing)" but the A is pronounced as a O, or maybe you're saying "La Porc" aka "the pig(male)" which make you illiterate because it isnt the proper word for a female pig, which is "truie".

I mean imagine you're talking to someone about a a boat coming to Glasgow port and he answer "ah yes, Glasgow sow!", youd be confused as to what the hell is he even talking about.

Are you sure it's not just your bias as a native speaker? I'm aware there a languages that have specific rules for making shit sound nice (hell even English has a/an the/the), but I would guess what you describe is more of a happy side effect than anything.

Oh boy. You will hate my language, it has six genders.
>>
>>555138256
>Are you sure it's not just your bias as a native speaker?

Yesn't? Sure some words can be used in the same context without much problem, but others inherently sound off putting. Ie "la fourchette" aka the fork, sound nice to the ear, but "le fourchette" sound dumb becuase it clash with the -ette suffix.

Think of it like the Dexter meme of "Le omelette du fromage" which sound okay to someone not french, but to a french speaker its outright harrowing as it effectively translate to "the omelete of the cheese".

Anyhiw ill stop talking about it because this is far too lobg a tangent for something that has nothing to do with vydea gaems.

Anons, I'm thinking of playing witcher 3, but I'm heavily annoyed by getting an EXP penalty for doing a quest "late". The game is so huge with so many quest that it's impossible not to miss some low level quests before their rewards get reduced to 2exp.
Should I install "always full exp" mod? How much does that fuck with the general exp curve? Chance of ruining my game, or is it just gonna keep low level quests relevant?

It's been a while since I've played, but from what I recall you're pretty much gonna be on top level wise if you decide to do all (or most of) the side content you find.
I honestly wouldn't bother with it. The only time I ever felt underleveld was when I found some unique armor earlier than intended and didn't get to wear it, but those armors are a whole different gripe I have with the game.
In my experience most quests were interesting enough (at least on a first playthrough) to do them even if I only got 3XP at the end of it
>>
>>555180848
Hmm fair. my problem is that I have played the start of the game like 5 times because I always stop playing somewhere in skellige. Not because the game is bad or anything, just purely because by then I have god knows how many hours in my save and I just organically do not start the game any more because the urge to play more is gone. Then suddenly I realize: "Oh, it's been 3 months since I played my Witcher save."

Well time for another go. Deathmarch again. But not sure what build to go for.
>>
>>555133285
Russian and some Slavic and Baltic languages like Ukrainian and Belorussian do that. The gender is entirely dictated by the ending of the word.
I.e. in Russian, most nouns in the neutral form tend to end with either a consonant, -a, or -o/-e, and the only common exceptions to this are proper nouns, loanwords and occupations/jobs (but that's more of a rule about how the words around it should be treated, not the noun itself because all titles of jobs are male, so when referring to a female worker it's fine to use a male version of the word, but construct the rest of the sentence as if it would've been female)
If your noun ends with -a then it's female, if it ends with -o/-e then it's neutral, if it ends with a consonant then it's male. Verbs (and all their special forms of which there are many) also have gendered forms too.
Generally, misusing the gender and referring to something animate in a neutral gender is considered insulting because only inanimate objects have a neutral gender and it's like you're indirectly treating person you're talking about as something dead and dumb.

Very relatable man. I'm the type of person who will restart from the beginning when I haven't touched a game for long enough almost every time (unless I managed to quite at a convenient Act/Chapter ending that makes getting back int the game easier.
I'm assuming I'm almost done with Witcher 3 because when I quit around July (on account of reading the books and wanting to avoid possible spoilers) I just got the achievement for completing all Witcher Contracts, so probably not a lot of side content left and the story seems to be moving towards a conclusion. Maybe I should get back into it soon too.
Good luck with your run, buddy
>Deathmarch again. But not sure what build to go for
I was disappointed to find out that it barely matters. I went with a somewhat potion focused build for my first Deathmarch attempt (my current one) it after the earlygame it felt like I was doing it mostly for flavor, unfortunately. Half the time I don't even remember to spend my skillpoints.

If you want to try something fun (but tedious) you can break up the "intended" Velen-Novigrad-Skellige order. After finishing Skellige there is some dialogue that implies you went to the other two places first and I wanted to see what happens if you don't and that conversation actually changes and I think there even is a small quest that gets replaced depending on your order.
The only downside is that you'll spend a third of your time being underleveld and then a third of your time being overleveled for the area you're in.

Not that there are ton of sidequest that arent worth doing, but staying 20 hours at a time per region can be boring at time.

>because all titles of jobs are male
I think many other languages have the generic masculine, though it's not true that there are no feminine job titles in Russian.
I see your point, it's a lot more consistent than what I know from Romance and Germanic languages, I totally forgot about that.
But I think what feels arbitrary to me is why cтoл would be masculine, лaмпa feminine and oкнo neuter, even though they're all inanimate objects, you know?

You just made me realize something. I recently watched a video that mentioned how micro distractions (or whatever the real term is) like opening your map or checking the quest log wreck havoc on your attention span while playing a game and are very mentally exhausting over time.
And reading your post I just remembered how tedious it was in W3, to figure out which side objectives you could do on the way to wherever you are going (since I liked to play without fast travel) because you can only display one quest at a time and have to constantly flick back and forth between the map and quest tab. >it's not true that there are no feminine job titles in Russian.
Yes, there are feminine titles and they mostly come from jobs that were culturally female like швeя or пoвapихa historically, but these all are derived from their male counterparts and don't work generally as most of them sound very bad or have negative connotations attached.
>But I think what feels arbitrary to me is why cтoл would be masculine, лaмпa feminine and oкнo neuter, even though they're all inanimate objects, you know?
This adds a bit of subtle subtext to how the words were treated historically since before the rise of modern Russian (i.e. the occupation titles above), and also allows you to give your speech a specific connotation.
Like "I like my automobile (male)" and "I like my car (female in diminutive form)" practically mean the same thing, but specify speaker's disposition better. And come on, this is Russian we're talking about here, a language where every single movement-derived verb has more than 100 different forms. Is it practical? Absolutely not. Useful in casual speech and allows you to express yourself better in niche situations? Only if you use them well.
>except мiй coбaкa for some silly reason, what the fuck?
That's an Ukrainian thing. Russian has пёc (explicitly male) and coбaкa (generally female). Пёc has been used for this purpose as coбaкa just didn't flow well, and it also doesn't equal to кoбeль which is used when you want to explicitly specify dog's gender.
Forgot to add that there are actually 4 genders (male/female/neutral/common) in Russian but there are like only 100 words in total that use it and they generally refer to non-specific animate quality descriptors which are not adjectives, so you can use noun-noun pair where the second noun functions as an adjective but can also be used on it's own as the primary member of the sentence. Don't tell that to anybody, not even the native speakers care.

Oh I just remembered why I originally installed the "always full exp" mod in the first place. I was playing with enemy scaling enabled which keeps everything on your level, keeping it reasonably difficult. So I thought it was kinda bullshit to have to get a low level exp penalty, for a quest that wasn't even technically low level for me.
>I was disappointed to find out that it barely matters.
It really does early on, but once you are a bit deeper into the game, yeah you tend to destroy things again. But I do remember really struggling with some hard fights on deathmarch. Particularly just tanky enemies that need a shitton of hits to go down, while you eat it in just few.

>>555193612
Just adjust it to whatever looks good for you.
Gamma is a hard problem to solve because every gaming battlestation is different.
Even The Dark Mod has nasty gamma variety between some fan mission authors, despite a great in-game gamma adjustment room in the game's built-in tutorial map.
>>
>>555208806
Toki Pona steals Nimi from finish, its a conglomerate of random words from random languages.
Toki also means "when" in Japanese and "I'm speaking" in Tok Pison.
>>
>>555209504
Or too bright? I frequently notice that in games my friends can't see shit, I'm totally fine and don't even really need a flashlight. But in Witcher if I adjust the gamma as the game says, everything is just SO freaking dark.
>>555210158
It seems that way. I was just surprised by how dark it actually gets. But also man: as long as I have been gaming, across multiple monitors and computers, every time I got a "Adjust until the image disappears / is barely visible" no matter how low I turned the gamma, I could ALWAYS still very clearly see the image/icon. Witcher 3 is the first where if I turn it all the way down it actually disappears, (the screenshot was not all the way down, it was legit when it was still barely visible as instructed).
Shame there's no way to have a better "reference" for how bright it should be,as it obviously would also have to be displayed on your monitor.
>>
>>554829240
What are you currently playing, /indie/? For me its The King is watching. Next probably the Last Spell.
>>
>>555214383
>Shame there's no way to have a better "reference" for how bright it should be
But there is a better way to handle the whole gamma/brightness calibration... TDM does it better than any other game I've seen.
It has an IN-GAME gamma test room rather than a still image in some option menu. The advantages of this should be obvious--All of your 3D rendering settings apply to it, even if you are running reshade/enb or something that won't touch a gamma test image in a menu. It will always accurately represent how the game actually looks as you *play* it and move around because it literally is a scene you play.

Final form and data bosses unlocked. The infamous "white room" was pretty frustrating on crit. It wasn't specially hard but at level 43, everything 1 shots me. So if I got grabbed by a dancer, stood to close to a spawning dragoon or even got hit by a cube, I would instantly die since I don't have second chance yet. After 2 hours and getting very close to doing it like that, I decided to just go grind 3 ribbon to turn the 1 shots into 2 shots and did it on my second try.
No idea why I decided to do that before finishing the last world but I got a boost of confidence when I absolutely destroyed that one boss...

Yeah, that was the only time the Witcher fantasy of preparing potions in advance and using them for a big monster fight really came through. Even if 90% of the time it's just the damage up potion + some decoction + some space left for a healing potion.

Monsters are basically chestbursters that pop out of dying humans and have different properties depending on planet-adjacency. They play by the same rules generally except they usually have extreme resistance disparity so if you don't have the right weapon/ammo type on hand you're not gonna have a good time. And if the danger meter gets high enough they gain maphack and start bumrushing you. Which is generally avoided by going to an empty floor and maxing the danger bar on purpose so you just fight 1 boss that can be lured to an area with strong cover for you.

Puzzles are nice until the last part of the game where the difficulty falls off (The game dev started in 2018 so the dev prob wanted to push it out asap). NEW x CHARACTERS
You can now play as the Falconer, a new character who fires off two balls launched by a pair of birds flanking the screen, giving their attacks a wide, swooping spread. Or take on the role of the Carouser, a medieval royal troublemaker who can twist ball trajectories with a personal gravity field, pulling shots off their usual paths.

NEW x BALLS
A selection of eight powerful new balls includes Fireworks, which burst outward in bright, unpredictable patterns, scattering damage in every direction; the Stone Ball, which hits like a truck on impact but slowly crumbles as it keeps bouncing; and the Landslide, which triggers a cascading wave of debris in front of the first impact point and deals damage that lasts for a few seconds to surrounding enemies.

NEW x PASSIVES
Three new passives have been added to the game - Deadeye’s Impaler cranks up your critical hit chance, and when those crits hit, enemies that are not the boss do not get back up. Well, that’s because they instantly kill. Grotesque Artillery pulls from your own gear, firing off a random ball from your equipped lineup every time it triggers. Iron Onesie rewards chaos, boosting the damage of special balls based on how many baby balls are bouncing around the field.

NEW x MODE
You spoke, and we listened! The long-requested ENDLESS MODE is now available! Each level can now be pushed as far as you can handle, continuing indefinitely as long as you manage to stay alive once finishing the boss in that area and agree to continue deeper into the pit.

HOW TO UNLOCK NEW CONTENT
The new content will unlock as you progress in the game. If you’ve already beaten it, everything should already be unlocked (except for blueprints, which you’ll need to find in levels).

You and I are the same.

I respect the game making me do things I don't want to do, though, in a weird, masochistic sort of way. Generally I only deal with Quasimorphs when I fuck up or get really unlucky, because I always grind Mars for enough drugs to not ever have to deal with them in ideal circumstances. This makes it feel more like a punishment for misplay than an inherent game mechanic and I'm okay with it under that lens.

What is it with my faggot brain and being unable to make ANY decision in a modern AAA game without looking up possible late game repercussions? Why am I completely fucking unable to just make a decision on the spot, and not worry if me telling this runaway dude to A rather than B, might result in him dying instead of being a merchant later that sells the best armor? Why can't I just fucking pick and live with the consequences?
Fuck, it never used to be that way. Back when I was younger I never once cared about the possible long time results of making the "wrong" choice. I just played how I wanted to play. Why am I unable to do it now?

for games i care about, i specifically pick times when i will be completely unbothered, often during night, and completely cut off the communication with the rest of the worlds

Maybe. Or maybe one too many games where making the wrong decision means you get the bad ending. I remember playing Cyberpunk 2077 and I couldn't get a specific ending that I was going towards (I didn't know there was this specific ending I was working towards it organically) because I didn't talk to takemura after a bossfight. Problem is: I just didn't see him in the rubble back then. I thought he was burried and gone.

>Fomo
Fomo truly is a bitch, and maybe it's a bit of both. I will admit tho, that I rarely "cut myself off" completely, because I get frustrated when I don't find something, and tend to look it up online. (I'm not talking solutions to puzzles or anything like that, an example would more be like: I'm currently playing Witcher 3 and need Arenaria. I've run around a bunch of fields, not finding it so I end up googling and learn "Ah, it's around this guys house".
I don't know, maybe that's faggy too, maybe I should stop that. But half the time I feel just a bit annoyed when I run around for too long just searching for some bullshit, and look it up to "save time".

Why would it be wrong to play optimally? Especially for games where the game developers manipulate you? If giving the game a fair chance when not deserved, you might not only not learn something, but active mislearn, as in, losing real-life experience points. By looking up story consequences for a game, or starting to read a book by reading the last chapter first, you greatly decrease the ability of the author to manipulate you.

Also, if your main goal is to test yourself regarding story options, and not (possibly addiction-creating) time-wasting filler, looking up solutions are way more efficient.

One flipside is that you might not get tested or learn regarding some aspects. But testing yourself regarding this requires a lot of trust in a game:
- It has to be very well-designed and free of any relevant bugs.
- It has to simulate choices well, a simulation that one can learn from, or at least scripted realistically.
- It has to not manipulate you, for instance with fraudulent stories, or rigged and fake simulations.
- It has to not waste your time with filler.

Picking games carefully can help.

On the other hand, sometimes if the fomo is too bad, I will say "fuck it, fuck this, fuck your game". Like, I stopped playing games that have daily and weekly login rewards or daily and weekly quests for pretty much the reason you said: "Well I missed some so.. fuck it.".

I hammer home points that are true, the faggot (You?) parrots nonsense and lies.

>>555323390
The faggot was being a faggot, not my fault.
And there is a difference between huge consumption of video games and meager consumption of video games. The players that have 1000+ titles in their Steam libraries and go hunting for any and all (anti-)achievements, are 10000% missing out on life, family and children. The people with a few titles and reasonable consumption of video games, are not necessarily missing out on life, family and children.

If you are a Steam shill, then do remember that healthier consumption of video games overall, decreases the risk of politicians raging and just shutting Steam and other similar stores and services down out of anger and frustration.
>>
>>555324704
I have a hard time taking someone calling video games a waste of time seriously when they're telling me that in a 4chan general about video games.

Yeah, cozy is definitely the wrong word. But I just really enjoy just hanging out in the gameworld, chilling in my apartment etc. Got some mods to make the game feel a little more like a life sim.
But then after the prologue it turns out that you'll be dead in a few weeks (or however long) and that kind of puts a dampener on things
