I just finished Tyranny for the first time on the disfavored path with no dlc here are my somewhat collected thoughtBeware that each section will not be lined up with each postWhere to even start?The story was decent. It started out really strong with leading your campaign, act 1’s tight premise, and your backstory all being very intriguing. However the story just falls off after that. Act 2, with the civil war in the tiers and the edicts, was somewhat cool as well. However, the act blows its load early with the edict of storms. Bladegrave is the only area that feels like a proper area, gameplay and story-wise. The vellum library, and sea of stones are way too short and their edict and story just aren’t very absorbing for one reason or another. The edict of fire only affects one tiny area. The library is honestly just way too small in general and it doesn’t really live up to the hype. The scarlet horde fights I faced on the disfavored path were also a total joke and waste of time. The edict itself is also boring, breaking it is just letting the library burn down properly. The stone sea edict is a lot more interesting both visually and store-wise, but the mystery behind Cain is not really explored (from my pov) and the story in that region is instead more focused on the beasts and civil war which is just banal in comparison. The civil war between the SH and D is a foregone conclusion the second you side with someone and there are no twists at all. So the overarching civil war and «the mystery of the spires» just isn’t that interesting on its own. Thus, if the main appeal of act 2 is solving edicts then it falls flat when those edicts aren’t interesting for one reason or another. I apparently missed the content in Lethians crossing so I won’t comment about that. part 1

You don’t really feel like you are «gathering intelligence» for Tunon, finishing the conquest, or winning the civil war a lot of the time. The game sorta just tells you «okay you won» at the end imo. I presume that the rebel path is more interesting as wiping out regions of no-names doesn’t really hold weight whereas gathering allies probably feels more exciting and tense. People told me the story ends abruptly, I disagree. The game’s content feels like it ends to ends too early, but the story doesn’t. Mechanically speaking the game ends just as it feels like it’s starting, with the exception of your companions’ skill trees which you can max out around level 12. At the end of act 3 you only barely start researching artifacts, edicts, upgrade items. That was partially my «fault», but since upgrades are tied to spires, which you can unlock quite late, and which also require rings you may not have, I don’t think I am the only one who ended up in that situation. Spell creation in particular is really fucked. Since you only get the necessary lore and certain high tier sigils to craft strong spells at the very, very end of the game. It feels like the the spell system was designed NG+ more than the base game.For all my gripes with the story I don’t feel it’s rushed. It’s decently paced and doesn’t end too early. The game was always small in scope. You were only sent to re-conquer a small region. All you have left after Vendrian’s well is to take out the few remaining rebels and win the civil war within the region or alternatively kick out the useless armies of the Overlord that can’t do anything without you. It shouldn’t take long. The mystery of the spires and edicts were paced well if you talked to your companions and read everything.-Part 2

And you "know" everything ahead of time if you pay attention to your missives with the faithbinder and Lantry’s explanations. But stories are allowed to have inconclusive endings. In this case it would be more of an asspull if it was conclusive.Speaking of rebelling, it’s painfully obvious it’s what the game was written around you doing. Your companions speak of it without your input and if you make Ashe and Tunon submit to you in act 3 the game automatically decides you are a rebel (maybe I clicked a slightly wrong dialogue option somewhere). Now you can still submit to Kyros (not like much changes anyway) but I found that annoying and badly scripted.Tunon in particular is a super good example of this «rebel design». In the trial for your conduct in the Tiers your goal is merely to defend yourself. You do this by just plainly refuting, lying, or twisting the truth to answer his accusations. After you absolve yourself of guilt and he randomly throws himself down and says you changed his entire worldview. This makes no sense whatsoever if you are playing as a loyalist. Refuting my warcrimes by saying I did it for Kyros should not shatter his worldview he is literally Kyros’s biggest fan. The trial is literally composed of accusations like «did you break Kyros’ peace by killing the scarlet horde in half-gate» and replies like «no I didn’t they attacked first». While Tunon does have to submit to you or likewise in act 3 they could have written that sequence sooooo much better. The trial sequence is also bad because it pretends like my reputation with Tunon doesn’t matter until the end (where it decides your guilt lol) and it doesn’t take proper account of everything you did, there seems to be a limit.Part 3

It’s not that the story ends too early, it’s just that the story is shoddy and has some serious design issues. I literally saw a lorem ipsum placeholder in the dialogue of an npc.As for the gameplay, the UI was quite bad. It’s especially bad compared to POE which I believe was developed in parallel or before it. I am playing on a 27 inch 2k monitor so maybe it’s just the scaling of my screen, but everything was painfully small and the layout was awkward. Checking enemy resists and effects is a pain with how many characters there are each combat. And checking your own full list of effects basically requires you open the character screen and lock at the bottom. Annoyingly enough there are effects, like unnerving presence, that literally don’t even have explanations to boot.The biggest sin however is your hotbar being comedically short. You only have 10 slots for some godforsaken reason. You do have menus for your reputation abilities, magic spells, quick items, etc but it’s just such a terrible solution compared to having 20 slots on your hotbar naturally. When they are in separate cramped menus it’s very easy to forget to use them. And worst of all you probably fill those 10 slots 3 hours in so there is no way playtesters didn’t complain. You are basically encouraged to remove what you don’t use, which is a dumb system imo. It essentially streamlines combat, and does so in a bad way. Besides that I have some other gripes like navigating your loot being a pain due to a lack of sorting options besides «item type» and categories. -Part 4 (every segment is roughly 200 words too long for a post)

I had to use heals with Lantry 24/7 even when not needed to level and it made combat feel like a chore. Mages also seemed to level much faster than my martial who lagged behind permanently, presumably due to lower action speed and due to leveling fewer skills. Just give me regular exp instead. Obsidian also added a retarded level-scaling system in the game that requires that you turn off all your non-essential skills so you dont let enemies scale for free. The level system is honestly pure ass enough said.As for the combat I have some issues despite liking it overall. Firstly there is no real AI option. You can’t program your companions like DA:O and the presets are lacking. The AI is also super bad. My melees just refused to use their spells when I was not in control and everyone’s movement pathing was consistently non-functional. It was common to see enemies and allies chase each other endlessly in circles when trying to pathfind, for characters to refuse to walk forward to cast a spell out of their range, or just to get stuck on invisible geometry period. Your characters will also disobey your commands if you leave the AI on so the rtwp elements are trash.-Part 5

It’s such a horrible system and I say this as a rtwp fan. Either add at least basic party AI functionality or decent pathfinding that makes manual not be torture. Most combats were also braindead. The game could get hard dont get me wrong, but it’s still a rtwp design game with dozens of trash mob fights even in a short sub 30 hours game. So not being able to full auto feels bad man. The class balance was okay but one-handed melees and mages definitely pulled far, far ahead of the competition. Melees are fine but only your avatar gets true exciting options and a large variety of activate skills. Kills-in-shadow and Eb have some cool melee stuff but neither them nor Barik or Verse get as many melee abilities as a custom characters making their gameplay amount to standing still and attacking.But while this isn’t a class issue it belongs here, armor is fucked in this game. Armor is dr and the recovery penalties of heavy armor are a joke and essentially cripples you. Light armor is infinitely better especially due to having better deflection, i.e. a chance to downgrade attacks from crits to hits, grazes to misses etc which save you more hp and better recovery. And every companion has a light armor passive as well. You can get around recovery but it’s not worth it since it happens later anyway. The armor balance is shit, most items have no reason to exist outside of the very early game (which to be fair is the hardest part by far). Part 6 (out of 10 it seems)

Yeah your endurance, will, and magic defense do come up but you can’t and won’t get them high. You just slap on immunities, use a potion or take a talent to deal with it so 6 defences definitely wasn’t necessary. It’s just bloat, it’s not hard to keep track of I just don’t see what gameplay it realistically adds. You’ll only ever take stats for damage anyway so you won’t boost your defences with resolve for example on other characters than Sirin who benefits from the increased debuffs on enemies.Spell crafting is cool, I love the idea of it, and it does feel good to upgrade your spell effects. But many of the spells are quite boring or shit and not worth even keeping on your hotbar due to limited spell slots and UI space, not to mention action economy. Some of the sigils could be easy to miss which further reduces spell variety, but that makes it so good when you finally find a new sigil expression or main sigil. The schools of magic are unbalanced though with frost and healing for example pulling massively ahead of atrophy and vigor. I was both disappointed and impressed by it. The spell variety isn’t that high and most sigils are literally just generic stat boosts which you won’t even have the lore to use realistically speaking, but it also is customizable in dumb ways like making melee touch spells ranged or adding recovery buffs to random shit which is neat.Part 7

Wrath and favor is such a better system than just plain affinity.The game clearly wants you to side with the rebels by reminding you at every turn of how useless the disfavored and chorus are and by making you do «bad stuff» if you don’t rebel, but it does still let you do that. The army's incompetence was what annoyed me the most however to the point where I am siding with the enemy next playthrough.The worldbuilding was nice, I love the bronze age low magic setting although it would be better without the spires and oldwall. I like the smaller scope of the game and the surrounding lore. There is definitely a lot of reading (like this review) but most of it is well written. The story and production-value might be weak, but the writing is very good on average. All your companions are cool besides kills-in-shadow, but I missed some banter and reactivity. I also learnt that their companion quests are locked behind the dlc. The game teases you with removing Barik’s armor for example and then it’s paid dlc, epic. The opening campaign is awesome, even if the reactivity to your choices can feel a bit forced at times, it is a great way to start the game. I like that you actually play a character with some importance for once even if the chosen one of the spires shit is lame (it does make sense however).Part 8

It’s cool, but the gameplay is rough, and it tries to go against what makes it unique at every turn, but it’s still worth playing, if nothing else because it’s so short you might as well try it out. It’s probably the shortest crpg out there. Whereas this review is the longest «post» on 4chan.

I'm playthrough Pillars 1 and 2 after playing Avowed. I'm just now arriving in Twin Elms after going White Marsh 1 first. I still am not hooked at all on this plot. Is the payoff good or should I just look up a synopsis and move onto 2? I heard that was a bit more punchy with the story. I also don't give a fuck about half these companions.

Overall a short by RPG standards, but very fun experience. You do get your bang for buck as the game is cheap (on sale now and even cheaper on key sites)Great art and story and well executed Lovecraftian horror. Didn't post too much plot details while runposting here apart from ending stuff, it's worth experiencing blind. It nails the atmosphere by making everything feel uneasy, as if something is wrong. While it goes for a retro recreation the controls are good and it doesn't feel hazardous to navigate at all, a modern version of a classic RPG.The combat is decent, not as complex and deep as other RPGs, but not one-dimensional either. You do have perk trees that unlock various abilities and none of them felt useless. Thief has a strong nuke via backstabing mechanic either upon attacking a flanked enemy or attacking from stealth (which it can enter in combat via ability) mages can get great CC spells - they don't seem to be big dps machines with the trees I used (didn't use fire), the best use of spells is debuffs and CC, clerics good buffers & healers and the martials various sustained damage. MC was a Officer great combat buffer hybrid. There are more classes and each class gets a list of weapons and armor types they can use and each of those has it's own tree with talents. It does add some replay value as there are 5 classes not represented with official companions. Some quests do give you alternative methods to solve them and there is minor reactivity to deeds. Companions comment on quite a few things, they don't really have big personal quests, but they do have personality and make the run feel alive. Recruiting most of them is optional as it seems, you can go with a custom party of mercs if you want. Combat was fun for me, only part I didn't like was an optional quest Tower of Ash.It's Lovecraftian horror so don't expect any happy endingsIf you love soulful retro art, deep creepy atmosphere and Lovecraftian horror, I recommend this one.

Finesse is the best stat in the game so I recommend taking it first on every character besides Lantry.Heavy armor is shit besides the early game as armor is flat dr and enemies hit for 20+ anyways only use it if you are dying super hard. Leather and light armor also has more deflection which is a stat that downgrades hits to grazes etc so it saves you more hpOne handed with a shield or just one-handed are the best weapons kills but two-handed is viable as well. Unarmed is super shit early so dont bother The control illusion school that you get from the scarlet chorus camp lets you cast a spell gives you deflection and can be taken by every character due to its low lore requirement Giving every character a healing spell, you learn from Lantry, is very nice but not needed on hardPotions are good so dont forget to use themOtherwise just focus on 1-3 things since the game has skill system that levels up on useEnemies scale to your level so doing everything isnt needed but you might want to turn of the leveling of irrelevant skills so that your enemies dont scale for no reasonTrain lore early in the scarlet chorus camp and maybe take some dodge and parryVerse is a good tank if she takes the evasive talentJust ask here if you are stuck I'll help

I wasn't expecting Rogue Trader to get so boring post Act 1. I've just finished Janus and everything feels barely finished for lack of a better term. Disjointed. Writing quality is worse than WOTR, things just... happen and then never get followed up on even worse than Owlcats other games. I made a deal with the Eldar and the guy just vanishes once the governor is dead. Even the council events when you level up a world feel shitty compared to WOTR, just a random text box popup.
