There's a cathayan faction that is guarding them, meant to be there until Miao can capture the lands immediately behind the bastion but then fall to the Chaos outside so she can step in and take them. As a player, this is incredibly easy, it's pretty much your number 1 priority, but the AI might take too long to get those lands, won't know how to prioritize once the bastions gets breached on multiple points, and will put the same priority on fighting Snikch who is on the opposite direction. And once the bastions have been breached and Chaos is pouring into Cathay, the AI just gets too confused about what it needs to do first and never actually bothers keeping the bastion sealed.This is also why Zhao Ming is often the most powerful force in the area, he arrives from the south so all the threats are in one dimension, and if he reaches the bastion area it means he already controls a ton of territory and armies and will quickly push out everything Miao couldn't deal with.

The army you build could just be countered from the word go, the game lost from the first second actually spent playing. The most important, strategic part of the game happens in a menu and ends up being just the same generalist crap because they've made up so many houserules.
