Team Dark really isn't a thing. Iizuka and Ian Flynn aren't just making that up to be assholes. They were never friends. The english dialogue made them sound friendlier than they are. The rest has always been projection from the fandom and people assuming that Archie was representative of what Sonic Team actually thought of the characters when that wasn't the case even in the reboot. A good comparison of this is Mimic, whose motivations and backstory wouldn't get properly fleshed out and articulated until he got his annual storyline by Gigi. IDWs Annuals are usually the highlight of the book and for some readers, Mimic as a character was salvaged by his annual story, with him dying after that was a disappointment. Meanwhile Belle wasn't given that privilege.
