I have some thoughts on the development of the lore between TES III and TES V regarding how the thu'um changed from being a unique thing about the Nords to becoming the language of the dragons and somehow also associated with the emperors of Cyrodiil.PGE 1ed Skyrim doesn't mention dragons at all. The thu'um is wind magic come from Kynareth.PGE 1ed Cyrodiil mentions dragons a lot, however it is very clearly implied that the dragons and dragon-motifs including the dragon in the Septim empire's banner all came from the Akaviri. The Blades are mentioned as "Septim's shock troops" who use akaviri banners, however as far as I can see it is not explicitly implied that the Blades are of akaviri origin or that they were the emperor's bodyguard.PGE 1ed Cyrodiil does say that Akaviri armies surrendered to Reman at Pale Pass and became the nucleus of his legions, but there's no mention of Reman: 1. Using the thu'um 2. Having any association with dragons or being called dragonborn PGE 1ed Cyrodiil also does mention that Tiber Septim used the thu'um (which he learned in Skyrim it says, but Tiber's origin is a huge can of worms in-universe), that Nords surrendered to him after listening to his voice and that he was known as Ysmir, dragon of the North, the Nordic name of kings.Varieties of Faith by Kirkbride in TES III also mentions that Tiber Septim was known as Talos, the Dragonborn (!) and Ysmir dragon of the North and that Nords saw him as a dragon. It also says that Akatosh was the “Dragon God of Time” but there’s otherwise no connection between Akatosh and Tiber Septim or the title of dragonborn.The same source also mentions that Kyne’s daughters taught the thu’um to the Nords and also that Morihaus is associated with “the Nordic powers of thu'um, and therefore with Kynareth”. This creates a very early source for a -rather indirect- connection between Alessia and the thu’um. Still no Akatosh, only Kynareth/Kyne.(1/4)

One huge doubt I have is whether Tiber Septim was referred to as “dragonborn” in Varieties of Faith because he was “the dragon of the North” or because he was an emperor of the dragon lands of post-Akaviri invasion Cyrodiil.It seems to me, from the way it is written, that he was “dragonborn” because he was “the dragon of the North”. If so, then there’s already a TES III connection between the term dragonborn and the thu’um (!), since the great Nordic kings named as “Ysmir, dragon of the North” were tongues and Talos adopted the names Tiber Septim and Ysmir after the death of Emperor Zeno, which followed the surrender of the Nords after hearing his thu’um.(2/4)
However, even this doesn’t imply at all that in Redguard/TES III lore there was anything resembling the description of the dragonborn in TES V, as a hero blessed by Akatosh capable of instantly mastering the thu’um by absorbing dragon souls. There does seem to be seeds for that eventual lore development already present, however.Tiber Septim is the most likely link of all these lore pieces, since he: 1. Used thu’um, like the Nordic kings known as “dragon of the North”. 2. Was known as the dragonborn (unclear why). 3. Was emperor of Cyrodiil, the dragon lands, with soldiers using Akaviri dragon-motifs.It seems to me like TES IV retroactively applied the association of dragons with Cyrodiil, which in previous lore only became a thing after the Akaviri invasion, to the earlier Alessian empire. As far as I know there’s no connection between Alessian-era Cyrodiil and dragons to be found in Redguard/TES III lore, but I might be wrong.My hypothesis is that, because Tiber was a dragonborn and an emperor of Cyrodiil, TES IV made Alessia -the origin of the Cyrodiilic empire- have the “blood of the dragon” too, now coming from Akatosh. I can only imagine that it seemed fitting for the dev team that the blood of the dragon came from the dragon god. In any case, now the connection between dragons and Cyrodiil comes from Akatosh’s pact with Alessia and not from the Akaviri invasion.(3/4)

Later in TES V, because both Alessia and Tiber were dragonborns, it must have seemed necessary to make Reman a dragonborn too, solidifying the connection between being dragonborn and being emperor of Cyrodiil.Furthermore, while in earlier lore Tiber Septim was known as dragonborn most likely because he used the thu’um, with the new lore concept of dragonborn emperors this relationship is inverted. In TES V, Tiber Septim was a dragonborn because he had the blood of the dragon from Akatosh and therefore he could use the thu’um. Once the connection between dragonborn and the thu’um is made, Reman -and one would imagine Alessia too- being capable of using the thu’um and the thu’um becoming the language of the dragons seem like very straightforward developments.This displaces the origin of the thu’um, which in the Varieties of Faith comes from Kynareth/Kyne, to now coming from Akatosh via his creation of the dragons. The role of Kynareth is reduced to merely having persuaded the dragon Paarthurnax to teach his language to the first tongues.These changes introduced in TES V also heavily alter the meaning of the Akaviri invasion. While in Redguard/TES III lore Cyrodiil was only associated with dragons after the Akaviri invasion, now the Akaviri invaded Cyrodiil searching for the dragonborn. The connection between Cyrodiils and dragons which originally was caused by the Akaviri invasion is now the cause of the Akaviri invasion.(4/4)

Seeing Tiber Septim called the dragonborn in a book from that game surprised me a lot.It's also very interesting to me that the Nords called their kings "Dragon of the North" at a time in which there was no clear connection between Skyrim and the dragons.This makes me believe that Kirkbride and/or Kuhlmann might have already had some preliminary ideas for what eventually became the dragon cult back during Morrowind's development. In their old posts in forums around the time of Skyrim's release they were both very invested in the lore of ancient Skyrim, with them debating whether Ysgramor was a dragon or a high ranking dragon priest.It'd be interesting to find a TES III (or earlier) source on the Nords or Atmorans having a cult around animal worship. Varieties of Faith mentions they have their own pantheon but it just seems like a local variation of the 8+1 divines. The Skaal of Bloodmoon talk about the All-maker too. Eventually Kirkbride parted ways with Bethesda once and for all but even after that he continued writing about TES. Are these writings, from the same person with the same ideas, suddenly not "canon" just because his contract expired and wasn't renewed?Kirkbride's own opinion, which he explained through his story c0da, was that the concept of canon doesn't really matter and that you should just pick and choose whatever you like the most and ignore what you don't like, essentially just making your own take on TES (or any other story).Personally I think there's a lot of sense in establishing ground truths and which sources are valid for the sake of conversation. Having said that, I'd much rather hold to the lore written by the people who actually are passionate about TES, such as Kirkbride, than the hacks who'd rather turn it into simplified generic fantasyslop.The one thing I will clarify is that a lot of people who get into TES lore tend to idolize Kirkbride and think that he alone made up all the cool lore, when in reality it was a big team effort. Coven of Crones takes you to a foggy marshy island and was okay at best. Arquebus is a cool dwemer dungeon that gives you a "gun". But you can easily replace that with lore-friendly rifles and my arquebus mesh replace in the /tesg/ mods OP. Truth In Legends gives you a neat set of armor and a big dungeon and boss fight. The Taste of Iron gives you a simple but cool set of Oblivion styled iron armor. I got Echoes of the Vale installed but have yet to actually been to the Forgotten Vale to check it out, it's mostly just extra fluff and dungeons I think. I got backdoors to the past one and two installed but have yet to explore the dungeons, they seem meh at best. Bards College I didn't like but others did, you may want to check that one out if you are playing as the dragonborn. And those are all the VC mods I've tested and installed, hope that helps.
