A different way I could compare Sonic & Tails is like, through the lens of something like Ed, Edd 'n Eddy. It's easy to say that Sonic could be Ed + Eddy and Tails is just Edd, but then you have to remember that the "Eds" as a whole are a group with a shared common goal and vibe and they collectively do the same things even if -independently- they are very different. If you get too caught up in the differences between them, you'd find yourself wondering why Double D is friends with Ed/Eddy to begin with. That's why I'd say Tails is like Edd on the surface, but beneath that is the opposite, like some kind of impulsive brave idiot that excels in combat or whatever, and he needs both of those sides to actually be Sonic's sidekick. If you remove the inner "Kid-Sonic" and leave only the Double D surface, you get Forces Tails who completely crumbles at the slightest hint of danger... which is not Tails anymore.
