Floyd and Idia are naturally gifted and so is Leona probably since he was noted to be bright even as a child. I feel like Riddle and Azul are in the same category as they're both obviously smart and talented but still have to work hard in order to achieve their goals. I think Riddle works hard so it can get chalked up to a situation similar to Azul's, but his ability to lock in during book 7 to pick up on Idia's coding with close to no prior experience seems like it goes beyond what can be achieved through hard work and diligence. New Years and Anni helped a bit on EN but once I blew threw about half of what had been backed up because I didn't have thaumarks, I was already out of thaumarks. Just got to book 7 in my EN playthrough and seriously considering jumping ship to JP or at least starting a new playthrough based on some posts in the last thread. I haven’t brushed up on my JP in like a decade but this tl is so bad it’s making me dust off the old genki books and as former anime industry I can tell you that these major companies do not care about the translation. I know a lot of you know this just by virtue of having brains like it’s not a fucking secret but so many times fans would send in fixes and requests for TLs and the corporate people above me (lowly entry level employee) would tell me no one actually gives a shit and forbid us from changing the TL. I didn’t work at Aniplex so I can’t say what their protocol is but having known a lot of translators they’re also super defensive about their work and the company usually doesn’t treat them very well either, it’s all a fucking mess which sucks because these companies tend to put a ton of money into stupid shit like billboards and ugly ass ads made by some third party editor who hates anime but don’t usually care about the source material. I had to delete my twitter after fighting with NIS America translators about the dangan ronpa dub after joining the industry and I’m considering going back to my roots and doing the same for TWST, can’t stand this shit and mostly left the industry anyway. It’s a bunch of underpaid, self important dweebs who barely watch anime most of the people who had passion have left by now. I feel very source: trust me bro so don’t take my word for it but just wanted to make a post saying you’re all right, the tl will not get any better and in my experience jumping ship from EN is the way if you can unless of course you have the resources and would like to keep funding it for Yana’s works to have wider global reach. I may keep both accounts for that reason.

They get irritated just at the casual mention of differences in OG works compared to their localizations when the discussion isn't even over titles they've worked on. Like, I get it, translators are overworked and underpaid/underappreciated and they want to defend the work that's being done. But what happened to artistic integrity? The recent drama I saw was what I think was the uma musume anime? Something like that. They changed "Merry Christmas" to "Happy Holidays" in subs for Americans and it blew UP. It reminded me of the twst people who go on about the VDC > SDC thing in Twst. The “Cater isn’t even IN that scene” mistake is actually something I understand. The official EN game and even fan translators will make that same mistake. You know how the English novel has “Riddle nodded and said,” “Ace agreed,” “Trey declared” etc all the time to tell you who is talking?
The original novel doesn’t have that. It does sometimes, but only like 30% of the time I’d say. So all of that “don’t forget reader, this is the character who is talking now” stuff is added by the localizer. And if they’re not paying attention enough they might just make shit up, like adding Cater to a scene he isn’t in, or having Yuuya say something he not only didn’t say but would NEVER say because they assigned him a line by Deuce. Yuuya’s characterization is all over the place in the English novel. I’m so pissed about it I want to share screenshots of the whole damn ebook on here so that no one buys it in English but we can still all make fun of it together.
But the “Azul is a third year” thing? That wasn’t an add-on. That was literally written as “Azul is a second year” and they rewrote it. No excuses for that.
Anyway it’s not a hard read. There isn’t as much furigana as the manga but I’d put it at late-elementary school level of reading. Maybe early junior high.

That explains a lot. I'd heard some from the voice-acting side of it, like you can't get an audition unless you meet a certain follower quota, but it is absolutely bizarre that it is extending to translators/localizers. I do translation stuff myself and my job is to hunch behind my computer like a little gremlin and for no one to know who ask who I am. If they start getting interested in the person behind the curtain then I am doing my job wrong.
I remember having a similar conversation when the dub team for the anime was released and I can't even remember what character we were talking about, but the person I was talking to was like "I'll have you know that guy is very popular on YouTube and Twitter."
And I was like "great, one of those kinds," and wrote a huge paragraph about how being loud on the internet does not automatically make someone good at their job, state of the industry, blah blah blah" and they were like "Oh no, totally, I agree."

Ding ding ding, I think that might be it. Maybe part of the problem is so many localizers/dub script writers are a bunch of failed writers with shit ideas that wouldn't sell, so now they're taking that bitterness out on the projects that they've been hired onto after their own tanked. They don't actually want to localize, they want to create their own stories. So they compromise by distorting art by other creatives into what they think it should be instead of leaving it as it is.
Which is bizarre, because you know that can't be an american phenomenon. There is guaranteed the same thing in JP too, failed mangaka or writers or whatnot who want to be doing their own thing but are instead forced to work as assistants on projects they don't care about to pay the bills. Majico wouldn't be drawing the Scarabia arc for Yana if her own stuff was selling.
But JP has discovered this magical thing called "proofreading," which seems to be a completely foreign concept to the US market. Or at least to Twst EN. And the english manga. And the dubed anime. And absolutely the poor english novels.

All this localizing talk reminds me of that time I got blocked by someone for pointing out that EN content isn't canon. They got big mad.

Once it's out for translation, the writer never sees it again. Licensing, oversight, management etc., it all becomes the responsibility of the overseas affiliate. But they are the ones holding themselves responsible. There is no one to call them out for doing a bad job.
Can you imagine how long the process would take if Yana actually approved all that they're doing to Twst? JP -> translator -> Aniplex USA. Aniplex USA makes its changes in English, then sends it back to the translator to be put into Japanese, along with notes explaining why they want to make the changes they have suggested so that Yana has the cultural context, because she is going to have no idea why "catch the tail" has to be changed to "bead brawl" and will veto it if she thinks it's unnecessary, so they will need to justify themselves. If their justification isn't good enough it gets vetoed. If it conflicts with the story (like Trey's dorm vignette) it gets vetoed. If it's out of character it gets vetoed.
Then Yana's decisions go back to the translator who put her corrections into English for Aniplex USA, who then either have to further argue why it is EXTREMELY important that they are removing the word "cute" from Cater's dialogue, or the have to come up with an alternative option. They do that for the entire script, then send it back to the translator to put into Japanese for Yana to approve or reject, back and forth until finally both parties are happy.
And there are people who think that's actually going on behind the scenes of manga/anime/gacha game localization? That is insane. It would never happen.

So this is crazy because this is actually the process marketing graphics/video/ and even some screenshots go through for approval but not usually to the creator themselves. Weirdly with some creators (A certain vampire manga that spans decades and names characters after musicians) they insist on having more creative control which production committees in JP (some with major American corporations sitting on them especially with co-productions being a bigger thing since Netflix started funding more anime this way) find very irritating. My knowledge is primarily in anime which is way more expensive to make so more at stake but manga approvals also tend to take a very long time as they’re sent overseas but it’s always been vague to me who oversees them. Is it editor-san? Creator-san? Maybe just JP licensor-san? Posting manga screenshots with heavy copyright usually comes with some very strict regulations ex) only first 10 pages, maybe a spread if you’re lucky and you can get it approved in a month. I’m not actually sure how the source material is QC’d for larger IP. I worked at an indie manga pub and we did all QC in-house by some terminally online American who had no grasp of JP and fought with the translator a lot but I’m sure the bigger presses have different workflow.

The thing is every production committee, JP licensor, EN licensor, mangaka, editor-san is different and it’s all relationship based so a lot of companies who have shown their worth or existed longer/ Japan feels it has oversight of get away with more and need less approvals so that is what I suspect is happening over at Aniplex USA with TWST specifically but Aniplex is one place where I’ve never known anyone so grain of salt.

Have you been around long enough to remember the English banner they sent out with Jade on it? Saying something like "My dear, I failed my contract with Azul, and you are to blame..." I've heard that Aniplex USA was hired for marketing and local distribution and they suck ass at both things, I wish they were held to some sort of regulations like what you're talking about. But we know they're not. Yana has said straight out that she has no control over what happens to projects like Twst where she is not the copyright holder and sometimes the don't even bother to tell her what is happening, which is absolutely the case here.
It feels like Aniplex USA is the only one overseeing Aniplex USA, possibly because of the weird chimera that Twst is, being made by Yana but not being held to her standards overseas because HQ is american and treats her like any other contractor, cause that's what she is. But even with Aniplex USA dropping the ball this bad, what can HQ even do? Aniplex main is also on copyright for this thing, It's not like Disney can just take it away from them and hire a better company, or threaten to reduce their SOW and outsource elements or anything, Mama-aniplex would never allow it no matter how shit their US branch is. Can Aniplex USA just do whatever they want with zero consequences because HQ has their back? Is that another reason why they're such shit?

That shouldn't really be in doubt after today. I don't think they can make it any more obvious than including the snow white footage at the beginning. Now, the "raverne=Crowley" theory (unfortunately) isn't dead in the water yet, but I reckon that one JP twitter user was right in saying Vil will play a large part in book 8 (hopefully), since Crowley is based off the Evil Queen's raven, Pomefiore is the oldest dorm (A reference to snow white's age, obviously, but a potential story element nonetheless) and since RSA plays a part in book 8 meaning it's possible that Neige (RSA's most prominent character so far) may make an appearance.

...But that's just me hoping my favourite character is important again.

Can't say anything on their Twitter account about any of their products or anything until they give the okay, except they're Americans who don't know JP. Do you think there is a chance that the implementation side of EN server is being overseen by f4samurai, just like JP server?
I ask because of the strange typos/typesetting mistakes that a native English speaker surely would have caught upon implementation. And because there seems to be zero proofreading happening. And the odd English used in last-minute announcements, like apologies for server crashes.
I am trying to put together a possible workflow, and this is what I have started to suspect:
Completed Japanese script (after approval by Disney HQ of content via basic EN translations) > Translation Agency 8-4 > Aniplex USA (localization) > f4samurai > EN server upload
Something like that would explain a lot, like the sheer amount of issues that EN has. It seems not impossible that Aniplex USA discovers how their localizations are implemented, the typos they themselves made but didn't catch (and f4 didn't catch because they don't know English), etc., at the same time as the players. Assuming that anyone on the team is actually playing the game at all. It's possible they send the script to f4 and then just move on to doing localization for Resident Evil and don't think about Twst again until the next script shows up for Americanization. They never respond to complaints about the server on their socials because it's not their fault and they have no idea what's happening. It wouldn't explain why JP server has so few server issues compared to EN, though, if the same people are doing the implementing. Hm.

This is a great q regarding the third party game devs, it’s always highly situational depending on relationships, how much who paid for what, and the contract itself. I like your theory but having taken a cursory glance at solely the EN websites, everything I’m seeing just says Aniplex of America regarding support, announcements, who runs the socials, etc so I dove a little further and found a press release

Aniplex is the official “publisher” which means they oversee QC and I wouldn’t be surprised if their JP arm just posts shitty typos and foregoes the EN team sometimes. I remember hearing the Aniplex of America employees didn’t have much pull over the JP side of the company and were usually subject to their whims but I’ve only heard that of the business side. Regarding why they don’t respond to complaints on socials, JP SNS rarely interacts with fans it’s just protocol. If enough complaints arise they’ll probably have some hush hush discussions amongst each other based on sheer volume and will bring it to third party American licensors if they eventually agree it’s an issue and swing the hammer down which doesn’t seem as likely to happen if it’s their own EN branch that’s embarrassing themselves.

As much as I want to blame EN I think it’s a scaling issue. JP wants as many royalties as possible, doesn’t know how to oversee EN, fucks it up in both directions, then we get the clusterfuck that is weird bad localization bullshit.

I’ve seen anti-EN vs pro-EN arguments (a lot less these days, the pro- people basically have no leg to stand on anymore) and an argument the pro- people give is often “Hey don’t blame the translators!” Their reasoning will vary. They will insist we point the finger at Aniplex USA for changing accurate translations into crap localizations, or blame some project manager who must be lording over the poor localizers, or that we blame Disney for giving them such a piddly budget for such a huge project, or even JP for presumably not getting scripts to them fast enough and forcing the poor EN team of apparently one overworked person to meet impossible deadlines.
Personally I don’t think any of it matters and they’re just deflecting. When we say “EN is terrible” it is a blanket statement, I don’t need to know the culprit’s full name and address.

If Aniplex USA is just doing marketing then what is happening inside the game itself is basically irrelevant to them, but reading through your explanations (thank you by the way; it’s all fascinating) it sounds like Aniplex USA actually is probably in control of the whole thing and really does just suck that bad.

i’m really glad this was helpful to you! my industry knowledge is no longer at all relevant to anything i’m doing career wise and if it can help people figure out how they want to push back against how broken things are, i’m happy to chime in. Unfortunately for these things, many times I had been on the other end of it and knew the truth about a situation but was under NDA or wanted to keep having a job in entertainment so I couldn’t be open about that absurdities. So many times it’s just some fifty year old man with like four kids who oversees a department but like hates the subject matter and has been checked out for years who just trusts his annoying staff to make decisions but they’re also understaffed and under resourced and there’s a high turnover rate intentionally because the work is so demanding, thankless, and doesn’t pay as much as other jobs in similar industries. It’s a work of passion but the higher you go, there’s always going to be some old dude at the top who is the worst or some random collection of boring influencer wannabes who band together to demand changes on something, or even just some basic nerd who only watches shonen calling the shots who wears spirit halloween harley quinn costumes to cons and calls it cosplay. It can be SO many dumb seemingly innocuous things that are just weird people relations rather than even a workflow issue. I hope you find your answer and please keep us posted on what you decide to do, i’m invested.

Yes, I would love to see Rielle and a character based on Alice, but I would also love to see characters based on the three good fairies, a young boy based on Flounder, the Kalim's cousin, a Himbo based on Hercules, another based on Megara, and a third based on Pegasus (a boy horse with wings?), and of course a professor based on the Fairy Godmother. But I didn't end up talking much about characters based on princesses.

There’s gotta be someone overseeing things that has no concept of cringe. The script reads very elder millennial to me, such a hard sell to my friends who aren’t major Yana fans already. But yeah, ding ding ding. Everyone’s always watching each other. It’s because to work at these places, you have to basically have a cult like mentality of us vs. them when it comes to fans online because of how often fan complaints arise of very different IP and a lot of them tend to have to block it out because of the volume of negativity online across the board. Not usually on this board but /co/ used to get a lot of leaks and our PR team was constantly asking me to help them investigate it because office people of a certain age like to act afraid of 4chan kek but yeah it’s a very big brother like culture in entertainment and especially with companies who work with JP who are so strict about leaks. That’s the easiest way to launch an investigation especially on a a game. My last thought is there’s also usually people who collect data for the company calling intelligent fans who are outspoken “the vocal minority” and people like us tend to be deemed the 1%. The logic is “if 99% of our customers are happy but the 1% vocal minority is unhappy, cutting our losses is fiscally beneficial” so a lot of the complaints are ignored unless they reach a certain volume. If it’s “the usual suspects” complaining, it’s unlikely changes will be made.

My experience is purely anecdotal of course so I can't speak for everything but my work was done on the JP side and what my senpai would say was "Complaints are like cockroaches. If you see one, there are actually hundreds out there."
I wonder if that's a cultural difference, since Japanese people generally don't go out of their way to complain about something unless it's really, really bad, but westerners get generalized as a louder group where people aren't going to be posting "I like this" when "I don't like this" gets them so much more attention.
That's why it drives me crazy when westerners in JP pop culture spaces are like "well this Japanese person online said they like this (weird american bastardization of an IP that doesn't belong to the US in the first place) so that legitimizes it." Not everyone has the emotional intelligence of a toddler. Place, Time, Occasion. 5ch and private feedback forms are the places you go to bitch, not Twitter. Complain on public forums and people will generally ignore you unless something has gone extremely wrong. (Obviously these are all generalizations, I'm not speaking in absolutes.)
That's why I think you're right and it might be possible that complaining about EN through JP feedback channels might actually work. If EN is ignoring everyone because they all complain so much that there is no telling what is a legitimate problem and what is engagement bait, then maybe going to their bosses will at least get someone's attention.

I feel like missing Dorm Trey is big in terms of utility, especially when you already have Riddle, Azul, and Cater (I usually throw either Dorm or Halloween Jade in as the 5th on this team) for the makings of a really solid generalist team. But he can spook you so I wouldn't sweat it too much if you really want to go for a limited.
Between Summer Floyd and Broomquet Lilia, I say Summer Floyd since you have chances to get Lilia twice a year. They're both great options in terms of buddies with the SSRs you already have.

I do, I just don't post him anymore online. He's one of the two characters that I did so much content that I can draw them with my eyes closed lol. He's special enough that he's the first character it comes to mind when I try to make new content for myself, like art trends, 3d modeling or sculpting (this one was a big fail btw lol).
I don't play the game anymore so my interest in the game itself quickly dries, this is why I don't engage with the content anymore, I only download it from time to time to read new story chapters and to ensure my Shroud collection is 100% complete and boom, deleted again, see you in some months.

I don't hear much talk about it but I love how twst uses their live2d models. Just simple things like moving the models closer and further, making them lower when a character falls down,moving them across the screen etc. helps with storytelling so much I'm surprised it isn't more common. My favourite was when they used a static png of Azul when he couldn't handle that first dream travel kek

I don't play other games so I don't know how the models are usually used in visual novels like this, but I love them, too. You're right that people don't comment on them much, and I've only seen one other person say anything, and it was complaining that "they barely even move." I always thought the models were amazing so that complaint stuck with me, but nice to know that someone else thinks they're neat. I loved Trein moving to put Lucius down in Chapter 8 with Lilia's "picking up eggleus" movement.
