A bit late to the party but finally finished the canto. I'm pretty disappointed with the finale, especially with how much I liked the setup. The twist that the main purpose of the spider house was to turn Ryoshu into a glorified concept incinerator was lame, I would have preferred if it was played straight and they were trying to make the perfect assassin or something.Maybe it was just me missing something since I was pretty tired by that point but Araya's characterisation felt super schizophrenic as well. She went from seething at Ryoshu enough to get killed over it to calmly sacrificing herself to bring Ryo back to her senses in the spand of like, two nodes. Really the whole drama with the time vault felt kind of contrived, which made the emotional beats fall flat.The mili song was pretty underwhelming and didn't really feel like it fit the circumstances, and I feel like there could have been a lot more done to give the final fight impact and emotional payoff. As it is Rien just monologued at us a bit and then we fought. Really Ryoshu felt incredibly passive the whole canto, especially since she didn't even get the chance to interact with half of the nursefathers.It's not all bad and I liked the nursefathers and apprentices a lot. I certainly enjoyed it more than canto 8. But it's specifically because there was a lot of stuff I liked that the feeling of wasted potential really stings.I have a lot more thoughts on the canto but my brain rebels against me whenever I try to organize them enough to write them down coherently so I'll just leave it here.Anyway thanks for reading my blog.
