Dominions is a fantasy turn-based war game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.
The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 3400 units, 1100 spells and 400 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them. It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.
Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a war game.

Dominions is incredibly wide but actually not that deep, just very poorly explained. Sure there's a bajillion units and spells but you mostly use the same dozen tools.
Solium Infernum has a much lower floor but I'd say a higher ceiling. You're ready to play after playing the tutorial. The big difficulty comes from juggling everything at your disposal, because you only get to give like 2-5 orders per turn so you need to consider very carefully what to do.
It's got a very decent tutorial (for the most part... It's taught by Belial, Lord of Lies, and he does sneak in a couple traps because well, the fuck do you expect) and a very detailed built in wiki.
An important element is that you can't just go and murder someone straight away like in Dominions. Hell has rules. As long as you take insults and pay tribute like a champ, no one can destroy you (and even if you do fight back, the first three times they still can't fully destroy you). If you comply, the worst they can do is steal some of your shit, damage your armies, etc. with hidden rituals. At least until false flag masking abilities come online in the mid-late game.. So generally there's a lot less of a need to drink in theory before playing because you're not going to get filtered out in your first war.
In fact, the whole concept of a war doesn't quite apply. SI is all about understanding a constantly changing pecking order, knowing who you can abuse, who you should bow to, and who would probably fall for the right bluff.

tl;dr Much more approachable and tighter than Dominions. The difficulty comes from choosing what to do, not from not knowing what the fuck all this shit does.

There's a decent consensus on the discord that the LA tier list is more compressed with less gap between the levels, meanwhile both EA/MA have a group of strong A+ tier nations with a large gap between them and B tier. MA has the strongest mechanics of any era.

To put an example, here's more or less your options in the first few turns of a game:

>get tribute (resources)
>demand tribute from another player
>bid for legions, praetors (generals) or magic items at the bazaar
>assign items and praetors to legions
>move a legion
>cast a spell (I think you always start with 3 but can quickly gain some more)
>level up magic to get more spells and other abilities
>level up infernal rank (powerful, but costs prestige = victory points)
Pick 2. You unlock more order slots by leveling up your magic but it's fucking expensive so it's quite normal to finish a game at 3 if you don't go for heavy magic.

Also there's great tooltips. Here's a screencap of the magic section, which is probably the most overwhelming screen, while hovering Prophecy 3.

Diplomancy is definitely a major element, but short term. It doesn't really make sense to make long term alliances. Power imbalances can switch rapidly, and there's lots of tricky stuff like the ability to cast spells hidden (so the target doesn't know who's casting it) or even to make it seems like someone else cast the spell in the first place. There's a dice roll involved but still. It's more bluffing and manipulation than diplomacy.
Research is MASSIVELY important. There's little to research, (see >>556033817 ) but those few paths are crucial. Aside from spells, getting one to level 4 gives you an extra order. Look at that screencap: Prophecy 3 lets you see someone's goal in a Vendetta (aka a time limited war to achieve a secret objective, chosen by the aggressor), and it gives you a ritual (spell) to see the all of another player's research except his strongest path. A higher level lets you see who buys what in the bazaar (otherwise a secret). The path of Wrath lets you have more legions, gives you spells and other ways to buff them up, heal them, etc. Deceit lets you hide things from an enemy's Prophecy, steal stuff, move enemy legions...
Positioning is very important too. Maps are usually quite cramped, but most legions only move two hexes at a time, and it takes an order to tell one to move, so responding to a threat can be quite difficult if you didn't plan in advance. You can probably force a stronger player to give you tribute by throwing the demand when his legions are far away from you.

Correct. There's essentially none of the tedious micro of Dominions. Late game turns are still like 30 seconds worth of clicking. You can still easily spend half an hour in the late game squirming over hard choices, but you won't be moving 30 commanders. Should you buy another legion or level up a power? And which one? Maybe buy that great artifact instead before someone grabs it? Or you could take the initiative and capture that site of power...

Here's an example of a game I'm playing with randoms. Turn 6 from 50something.
My strategy in this game is to be a super aggressive bully. I gave my pretender the artifact that lets all my legions move +1, so usually 3 instead of 2. I'm Erzsebet, the pink one.
Beelzebub started with his legion to the right of his stronghold. Meaning he couldn't attack the Tower of Pride in a single turn. Since the Tower and the Tree are both weak sites (+1 prestige per turn), I thought it wouldn't piss people off too much if I took both. Except for Beelzebub, but fuck him.
Turn 1 I got a cheap extra legion. Both together can capture the Tree with minimal damage, and they're 2 points of damage short of the Tower. I spent the second action giving my starting legion a +2 damage stratagem.
Turn 2 I moved both legions into position. I used my extra mobility to take a tile towards the Wood of Suicides so I can threaten it, hoping it encourages both players to the left to want to keep me placated. I don't actually plan to fight for it. It's perfect there for them to fight over, and I want them to hate each other so they don't hit me. I also sent them both some diplomancy offering friendship against the other.
Turn 3 I quickly captured the Tower with a double hit, and trapped Beelzebub against the wall with nowhere to go.
Turn 4 I took the Tree.
Everyone is still expanding, starting to take down their first sites. I already have two. Shitty ones - that Wood of Suicides gives +2 to Deceit rolls... But I'll be gathering prestige passively and can now spend some time healing, gathering tribute and consolidating power. As soon as the two to my left are stuck in a fight (they're already hurling insults at each other, as expected) I'll start bullying the fuck out of Beelzebub.
Of course, I also made friends with Belial, who's the blue one to my South, North of Astaroth, who's my (and probably his) main concern. The enemy behind my enemy is my friend.

That sounds in some ways interesting, but also sounds a bit abstract, artificial and arcadey. In many war situations, giving orders to armies could presumably be done without requiring diplomatic activity. On the other hand, if the situation is like a civil war, or the participants must adhere to rules, or it's kind of like a pre-war situation or cold war situation with proxies, or something, making it "expensive" for a leader to move armies around might make sense. In some time periods, leaders might also have to convince or bribe soldiers and vassals to participate and follow orders. Also, IRL top leaders can be very involved in war planning I guess, especially when it is intertwined with diplomacy.

The whole game is a good bit more abstracted than Dominions.
The general idea is that demons, whether the basic troops or the chain of command, are lazy, bloodthirsty, dumb, or all of the above, and it takes some dedicated effort to get a horde to behave. Plus all the layers of spies, agents, and assorted liars that are in the way of shit getting done the way you want it.
There's also lots of little things that are simply odd limitations, handwaved as the rules of Hell. For example, you can't march into another Archfiend's territory unless you're in a Vendetta (limited fight) or Blood Feud (all out extermination fight), or one of you has been excommunicated by the Conclave, which is why blocking Beelzebub like that is a big deal. Or how all transactions at the bazaar must be made in 8 resource tokens or less, so a huge amount of small "1 soul" pieces won't allow you to buy something that costs 10 souls. You'll have to spend an order consolidating tribute, condensing multiple tokens into a single one.
It is artificial and arcadey, but it adds a lot of playroom. Making big tokens is dangerous if someone can spot them, or try to steal them or burn them away with a spell. It can also give you an idea of what they're for. If they're amassing hellfire, they probably want to increase their Wrath, or recruit big legions.
It doesn't aim to simulate realistic warfare, but rather to make room for politics, backroom deals, trickery, spionage and dark magic.

Sounds like an abstract board game, like what some might call European style board games, for better or worse. I do sometimes like that kind of game. In computer form, I am guessing that Gremlins, Inc. might be similar, though I never played neither game. One of the creators of that game made Eador, which is interesting, bit also a game with a lot of deep and sometimes debilitating game design and programming flaws, like AI getting stuck and requiring closing the program.

Which amphibious indies are actually good at expanding into water?
Seems like everything just kinda flops unless I can outnumber the rando tritons and crap 2:1

In my case I can pick from Ichtids and shambers (with sloops's shield shambers) or should I just wait until I got enough spells to make some thugs and send one in?

Good aquatic troops are better than any amphibious indies. If you find triton knights or something like that, you're generally shit outta luck unless you bring in mage support, dedicated thugs, or overwhelming numbers.
For the weaker variant like naked mermen with daggers or spears, ichthyids usually do pretty well.
Shamblers hit very hard and are surprisingly effective, but they're also very expensive and brittle. They're best mixed in with something else.
If you don't have national troops or a lot of luck with the indies, you're generally not going to find great success getting underwater, specially if there's a player who does have dedicated stuff.
I'd bring ichthyids and shamblers in like 8:2 proportion and aim for the weaker provinces. Once you manage to knock down one with armored tritons and can start recruiting them yourself, it speeds up a lot

I guess it was to be expected that the remake a massively janky game would still have some jank, but what the fuck.

Alright, I'm going to try something. I'm letting this round run, but I'm also creating a 4 player one on a small map. If you all join that one, then I'll start it immediately and we can play both or abandon the big one, whatever you guys want.
On retrospective, I think even for 6 players a large map is fucking huge. Looks geared for super long games where everyone ends up overloaded with stuff. I think I'd suggest medium maps instead for normal games.

It's not, if I understood correctly from the announcement the project began before blitzmin shared the code.
I guess the code shared sped up the development but I don't think it's an actual port/fork else all features would've been merged effortlessly, not to mention the announcements also hint that it's taking some effort on his side:

Makes it sound like he's worried of his code breaking, blitzserver's code overall hasn't really broken for anybody besides weird issues with port assignment. vine men and lumber constructs can go underwater. nature-death manikins can go underwater

glamour:
might be as bad as astral for going underwater early. at least illusions and phantasm-uw-variants are amphibious

blood:
some nature crossbreeding results are amphibious, but otherwise poor options

You're probably right, Gremlins, Inc. is also not asynchronous from what I can tell. Solium Infernum does have the board game tag on Steam, though it's down the list, not the most popular tag for it.

I feel like for most situations I'd rather just kill the enemy. Maybe a dozen spamming at monster pretender being blind thrown into a province alone? But even if it does hit (a miracle in real-time combat) they still get an MR check to completely resist it.

I mean, its better than nothing, but you're still trying to get past the MR to secure the effects, meanwhile getting through the MR once with soul slay/enslave mind/charm will secure the kill. Instead I think its just better to summon a handful of sprites in battle, which can make 50+ effective attacks with a single casting. Sprites can be especially good in army battles if the enemy elites don't have shields.

I vaguely recall that air shield blocks elf shot too, but that's something I'd want to confirm.

However, I'd say being in a gamestate with a single primary blood nation remaining who has put blood moon up already is an existential threat. Machaka's cap only spider assassins are actually pretty good. Slap a Dreamspool and Acorns on them, then script (Warrior Illusion)x5 ATTACK is strong enough to kill just about anything outside of giants and pretenders

So the poorly ported over version of Oeridia in dom6 has inspired me to get into modding, if for nothing else to fix the map.

I am permanently banned from the Steam forum by Sombre for telling troons to fuck off and make their own game, when a few were crying about seduction tags and the representation of women in Dominions, if anyone is interested I will try and upload the map here if I'm successful at fixing it.

On that note, I really don't know a ton about the Greyhawk setting, if anyone would like to see some things added or has any reference materials to share, feel free to let me know.

All nations are broken as fuck compared to vanilla. Hard to say compared with each other, since we haven't played it nearly as much as vanilla.
Skaven are annoying as fuck. They get assassins, recruitable bane fire throwers and disease spreaders, and any provinces neighboring a Skaven province has a significant chance of getting a nasty site that rapidly raises unrest unless you set PD 26, which can eat a good chunk of gold if he's a neighbor. And it fucking spreads.
Their troops are rather weak, but the buffing potential and little tools are insane. All in all pretty fun

You can get a lot more tribute by buying a higher nobility title (Sanctum > Rank tab). The higher your rank, the more and the better tribute your offered, and you get to keep more of it. You also get to demand more tribute from other players.
Increasing one of your powers to 4 also helps a lot due to the extra order. Then you can regularly spend one on tribute and still have two order slots left to get shit done.
And if you think someone has been very passive and is probably gathering money, a bit of thievery might be in order. You could get lucky and snatch a big piece of consolidated tribute.
Also consider whether you've got a use or purpose for all the shit you're buying, and whether your magic is strong enough to prevent everyone else from yoinking them right out of your vault as soon as you actually need them.

I have so far fixed some of the graphical errors somewhat, if you've played on the one ported to 6 you probably came across the odd lines across the map that would make your dominion look wonky, and some provinces that didn't match their borders on the map. I think I've gotten all those, and I filled in names for some provinces that didn't have names. I have spotted a few pixels here and there that I missed in playtesting, but it's considerably improved so far.

I tried running the command that auto fills isolated pixels or whatever before I tried doing it by hand, but it crashed the editor.

I've added forts back to a few of the provinces I remember having them as well, though I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Currently in the process of going through the .map file and looking over the custom entries for provinces and fixing some stuff, which ballooned into me wanting to create themed starts for a custom game of my own. But, I'll remove that stuff from the map when I upload here, as it's likely to be unwanted edits.

Have you noticed that Regency (who goes first in the round) is rotating, and whenever it gets to you, you get an event that you can play (from your Sanctum)? One of the events is that God is getting tired of our shit and sends that thing down to hunt for sport. It wrecks the strongest legion of each player (although it doesn't shy away from annihilating anything else that gets in the way) and then fucks off.
Still better than the one where an order of paladins on a mission sneaks into hell and start killing your praetors and breaking artifacts in your vault.
Notice that it doesn't have any particular resistance to misdirection magic.

If we're giving feedback here, the plagues felt really underwhelming. Very small amounts of gems, and the only plague that gives decent freespawn is the one gated behind one of the unique heroes. There are also worse things out there and some can be bought in the bazaar if you've got enough cash. But generally you're just going to have to take the loss. Specially because I'd be surprised if you set up a fucking monster capable of beating this thing single handedly and you don't get at least 2 or 3 rituals sabotaging it for shits and giggles.
It's also possible to win by capturing Pandemonium, which by late game has all stats in the high 20s. You can make some really broken combinations with high level legions and a good choice of praetor and artifacts

I went with an awake F1N2 golden lion with sloth 2 growth 2 luck 2 magic 2. You might be able to get away with some type of diversity pretender that's dormant, but without the benefits of a bless I think its impractical to depend on your imprisoned pretender for value in the lategame, especially if its breaking into several new paths. I broke into glamour just before getting throne based glamour mages, and brute forced blood similarly. The key is to empower a W random cyclops into G to summon water kobolds, and then into B twice for blood stones.

You can also go bronze colossus as Phlegra, but I personally dislike going BC so I never do. A Bronze Colossus MA Phlegra won their round 1 Lucid's tournament game.

Shit you own gives you prestige every turn. Not sure if legions too, but praetors, sites, and I think artifacts do. Some things increase how much.
Charisma has a few options, like a nice ritual where you get some prestige whenever people throw demands around. At the highest level there's also one that directly gives you some prestige.
Constantly insulting people provides a nice supply, but you risk a vendetta of their choice. Demanding tribute gives you less prestige, but you still get some tribute and if they refuse, you're the one who gets to choose whether to challenge them to battle or to a duel.
And in general, all the damage you can cause gives you prestige. Successfully hitting people with rituals, winning battles, etc.
Prophecy also has a nice couple rituals where you get extra resistance against Deceit or Destruction, and some extra prestige when you resist a spell from these paths. It pairs well with an aggressive strategy: piss people off stealing or burning their stuff and shield up before they hit you back.

Singleplayer?
A different nation, like awake regeneration bless on Niefelheim or Muspelheim, with at least 6 candles, might be easier to play with if you're new. Basically, turn a commander into a prophet, gather at least like 12 sacred giants, script your prophet to cast divine blessing, and send your army into any easy-looking provinces and hope for the best.

There are also some streamers and video makers playing the game that you can learn from, and old battle reports. The Steam forums has a pinned topic with links.

I saw one game for EA Berytos where the player took a dormant unbearable splendour bless to deter hellblesses and to help in a first war. But EA Berytos also have blood summon sacreds, and an expensive bless probably does not make sense for MA Phaeacia.

In another game, a MA Phaeacia player had a lot of storm captains being used as battle mages and doing well at one point in the game, but the player might have overextended or ended up careless, and ended up losing as I recall.
Storm captains with storm up and summon storm power can probably cast thunder strike once. They have significant encumbrance, so they can't cast it frequently given its high fatigue cost. The storm captains are not sacred.

If you want to use the sacreds, a bit of shock resistance might be helpful.

There are also some national rituals that might be of interest. The paths might be awkward, so it might or might not make sense to consider that regarding the pretender.

Taking an awake or a dormant pretender that can forge dwarven hammers, maybe without boots (E4+ for monsters , E3+ for human mages and titans), should enable early on your colossi weavers to monthly forge (there is an automatic command) owl quills at construction 3 for 2 air gems. That might boost your research a lot.

Also some national items.

Fortune is peculiar and wonky, it probably won't change much.
One specific combination might give you a lot of gems over time, though, but not all nations can even get it, and it might not be worth getting. Especially in EA, one should probably not take turmoil scales unless one is playing as Yomi, Lanka or Pangaea.
Some events also depend on the age.
Some events have turn requirements.
Most players seem to mostly ignore fortune or take it as a nice, added bonus.

Ideally, the dwarves would play with a few megastacks that they just can't afford to lose

So they struggle against raiding (now that I mention it they should have more anti-assassin stuff) but their innate siege strength bonuses make them adept at just marching towards your cap and taking it without much you can do.

Obviously, these things have to be tempered by other considerations like balance and fun lol

What you do is blood hunt with your Tendie until you get enough Blood slaves to Empower a different unit into Blood. If you are at Cons5 then you give it a dowsing rod. You can then further empower that unit, or empower another one, and snowball from there. Remember to ALWAYS keep 5 units to Guard Commander on every blood hunter, and a rough rule of thumb is that you need about 20 units patrolling to neutralize one blood hunter's Unrest.

I was just playing around in singleplayer again, with a dormant Golden Idol, 4E/4B. With him I was able to get extremely good scales which made the expansion phase insanely easy using the camels. My idea was to blood hunt enough after he woke up to get a Ghulah, researching Blood 5 after my initial sprint to Evo4. I may try it again with a different guy - great sage maybe? - going for F3/E4/B4, the F3 giving me the paths to cast Summon Shaytan.
The camels are just so good, recruit anywhere and the Sheikhs too mean reinforcing is super easy.

They look a lot like burning ones from EA Abysia, except they might fit 2 in a square, have 3 attacks instead of 2, have more HP, are much faster, and have higher base damage before berserk. And then missing out on stuff like fire resistance and fire shield, and have 11 MR instead of 13.

I don't think they will be worth the cost if they don't have a powerful and fitting bless, though. And the 11 MR needs to be handled somehow by the player.

Lots more protection, greater attack skill, reinvigoration, and two more attacks at the cost of a few points of strength, bigger size for no HP benefit, and no recuperation.
WH in general tends to give monster races less strength than their vanilla dom equivalents. Orcs in particular feel like they should be able to reach the threshold to use Bow of Titans with experience as standard, but are usually just a couple points above their human counterparts. Maybe if a promotion system was added to them so boys could eventually become nobs with a higher base strength?

The combination of super-high protection after berserk, high combat speed, berserk, trample, and sacred, might be rather powerful against vulnerable types of enemies, especially many types of indies.
If that is not desired, lowering their protection substantially might work, for instance by something like replacing their "chain mail cuirass", 12 protection, with "looted pieces of armor", 5 protection. That also fits their sprite better. I don't believe any vanilla units wearing "chain mail cuirass" have naked torsos. There might be the issue that they are sacred. That means that they can be given some resists and MR, making it significantly harder to counter them for some nations. They are already very fast with 15 combat speed, and trample, so mages raining down evocations will not have many turns to target them.

Vanilla grove guards are also fast, 11 combat speed, with high protection, but they aren't sacred, so vanilla grove guards cannot easily be given resistances.

Apart from vanilla grove guards, there aren't many units that are close to fitting the bill.
Some elephants have high protection apart from great size, but they are not sacred, have low morale, and do not go berserk.
Some chariot mounts have high protection, but often low MR and not sacred, or have weaknesses like the "stupid" tag and recruitment limit 1 such as the mushussu mount.

Maybe lizard heirs are closest, since they are sacred. But they are also expensive cap-only commanders.

As a note, I brute forced into blood this game with barb chieftain and managed to get to get my first blood stone in about 15 turns, which for Phlegra takes about 100 slaves because of the master smith +1 on elder cyclops. Use barb chieftain because they are cheap, they tend to survive blood hunting assassinations without bodyguards, and having a pile of barb chieftain is useful for light thugs or anti-assassin commander spam. Try to hunt in provinces with your dominion around 10,000 population; the limit for 100% effectiveness is 7500 but patrolling tends to kill population so its best to setup somewhere a little higher. I go to a max of 10 barbs in a province based on patrollers available. Periodically if I get an unrest spike I stop hunting and patrol with everyone there.

There were a ton of things that were screwy about that battle, but that was some cool kit + fluffing. My MR is high enough that I'm unsure if damage reversal would have been enough, although in some sense I'm somewhat glad I didn't have my masters on advance and cast because they'd have likely died. The trampling makes it quite hard to deal with ... which is one of the reasons I needed an actual wightan for my own trampling bullshit.

I've experienced something a bit similar playing against impossible-level AI in singleplayer in some versions of Dominions, though I didn't mind it that much and don't remember it taking a very long time, just somewhat long time.
It's kind of difficult, for Illwinter has also had criticism about the AI not being difficult. Other strategy games also often face such criticism. I think personally that Illwinter is doing a decent enough job, though I don't have a lot of experience with the AI in Dominions 6.

Well Xib, I checked that storm and I have some disappointing news. If you had cast iron wills on your god (AOE 1 MR+4) then they would have survived the battle. To be candid, bringing your god into heavy enemy dominion against a blood vengeance bless is always asking for trouble unless you have phoenix pyre available; the dominion reduction to pretender/prophet max hp can be devastating during long battles with regen ... as you just saw. But getting your god fluffed with iron wills is an essential for you, and might be worth bringing along one of your rare E indies to do that, saving a spell slot for your god.

If you can find a way to get a few higher MR W2+ casters I'd start bringing them for cleansing water spam at the frontgate; I'd probably want an MR of 18 at minimum. If your method of fort storming is beating your way through the gate, you need to bring a little more boom.

For a more refined game I'd recommend one of the ai spell casting mods such as Lucid's, this helps make the lategame more than just SCs running around by enabling mage teams to be more useful. There's a gem longevity mod that really helps in higher skill lobbies where people are willing to sell magic phase gem burns. Worthy Heroes is a solid mod.

Sloops and Dominions Enhanced do, on the whole, allow more tactical expression, but each has some issues that are broken; DE is significantly more broken than sloops IMHO. But that seems to be what DE is going for so that works.

A small AOE buff for trampling makes it more challenging and balanced, even if the targeted units are undisciplined. Trampling is in vanilla one of those special abilities that are more tightly controlled, there is no buff for it in vanilla, only items and some existing units. I'm playing a human communion nation while blood hunting and commander spamming to deal with Abysia. I'm also nearly 100 provinces, with about 270 gem income, 90 blood income, and almost 30 dwarven hammers.

It doesn't help that my style doesn't involve building out specific armies, but maximizing efficiency of force recruitment and then figuring out how to deploy the forces I have in some cohesive fashion. This tends to give me more resources than my opponents at the cost of operational complexity. After several runs with a nation I do fall into certain patterns, but I decided that I had to up my aggression before Abysia wins the game off lategame blood bullshit. If Abysia gets up astral corruption I need to be close to killing them ... although I am setting up a few anti-horror provinces to continue using magic it will screw my army forces. Abysia is clearly stocking blood slaves instead of spending them in war on me.

Barb chieftain, but afterwards I got both circle masters and arch wizards of the dark arts. I was fully into blood and had my first bloodstone by turn 40. What's nice is I have 60 barb chiefs that I'm throwing into the Abysian front, with any that get 2 stars getting a shiny new sword and antimagic amulet.

Its far easier to break into blood with barb chieftain than you might think. With 30 of them blood hunting, and with solid patrol chaff you should be getting more than 10 slaves a turn, with occasional crazy spikes. Barb chieftain are cheap, and tend to survive blood hunting event battles without needing bodyguards due to berserk, as a large number of hunter deaths occur due to hp routing. For instance, Ghulah without bodyguards will lose around 1/4 of their blood hunting event battles even having the second form and regen, nearly always due to running away.

Well good news, I found the assassins! Even killed one in a really funny assassination battle ... glad I brought the bag of winds for backup. A mixture of things. Ermor got large enough that it was starting to warp the gamestate slightly, where everyone had the decision to fight Ermor or risk more of their potential future lands going to shit. I invested a decent bit of resources preaching on our border with telestic animates and temples and I still have half a dozen dead provinces. The large map doesn't help either, combined with me running a strong pace has made my neighbors less prepared to fight me right now, beyond just the inertia from setting up for another war then needing to transition to fighting elsewhere.

To be candid, I have a crazy assortment of stuff this game which is somewhat outrageous. Definitely a top 3 game in terms of my resources and overall war capability.

Spells like wind of death, especially with MR penetration boosters, might work well, even though the knights are long-lived. MA Man does not have astral mages, so even though they have national chorus communion spells, they probably can't cast antimagic, unless their pretender can summon golems or ether lords or they have independent mages with astral or broke into blood with one of the astral devils, etc.

For regular evocations, remember that to protect against shock, a very high resistance level is needed for some spells, due to armor-negation. While their crones of avalon have air randoms, and they thus can get shock resistance buffs into their chorus communions, only about 1/5 crones have an air random. As an example, if a knight of avalon has 5 SR from the bless, the AOE1 part of thunder strike will still generally kill him, and the AOE10 part might randomly damage him. Also, some remote damage rituals, like murdering winter, won't give the units a chance to bless up, I believe.

Besides that, knights have great defenses and protection, but they are also expensive and do not have that much hp, so certain kinds of units with very high damage, combined with some spells, might trade efficiently against them.

Second the idea of a communion, with gifts from heaven amongst the best option. The TLDR of the situation is your troops lack the damage to kill Ashdod's troops in any meaningful fashion, although unless Ashdod has a regen bless then in theory you can beat them with enough garbage. If you wanted to fight with your troops being the killing element, casting things like strength of giants + steel slice warriors + quickening + gift of the furies on a pile of infantry, even shitty infantry, will let them kill shit. You could also take a crazy offensive bless, but MA Arco is the "mindhunt + human communions" nation so ...

Early on if I were desperate I'd rush thaum 4 for paralyze, and probably try to get to const 3 for Great Swords of Sharpness. Putting them on your mounted commanders and enlarging them will allow them to wade, which is probably necessary to kill the earth snek without soul slay or incinerate. You can also possibly attrition them, because trading 150 troops for 6 sacreds is actually unsustainable for Ashdod but is just gold for Arco.

Gifts from heaven is evocations 5, and soul slay is thaumaturgy 5. Enslave mind is thaumaturgy 6. You are right about timing when you hit research targets regarding plans and starting wars, but Dominions 6 is also a complex game, and making plans without experience and game mechanic knowledge can be difficult. You can watch videos and other media regarding Dominions, the Steam forums have a pinned thread regarding some options. Dominions 6 is also the kind of game where reading some of the manual can be helpful.

How many sacreds is the AI using absolutely as well as relative to other troops, and what bless does it have?

Normally, body ethereal is a good spell for MA Arcoscephale, since it is available at alteration 3, and you have easy access to astral magic. But MA Ashdod's sacred cap-only troops have a magic weapon apart from their horn attack, ignoring ethereal.

I would have liked glamour on your pretender, just a few path levels. Glamour has some neat options, for instance, some glamour-nature summons are good, and outside enemy evocations, they would have been able to hold the line for some time against giants due to the giants having few attacks per square, making it more difficult to overcome the high defense skill and mirror image from the glamour ability of some troops.

The giants are going to easily punch through your troops' armor, so outside something like repelling, you should probably just recruit hordes of cheap troops, to act as a meatshield and give your mages time to communion up and cast spells.

If you have any water gems, at conjuration 3, you can summon yetis, which you can set to fire missiles. Some other summons that you can throw gems at as well.

But yeah, trying to gather a large army, a good number of mages, set up a communion that will not fatigue your mages to death (try to have many more communion slaves than communion masters), and then get either evocation 5 or thaumaturgy 5, may be the most direct way. Conjuration 3 has power of the spheres, and conjuration 4 has light of the northern star, both great for astral communions. Cast power on the spheres on one of your masters after communion is up, since it will propagate to your slaves and lessen fatigue from astral spells, and cast northern star a single time with one commander.

You could basically go for thaumaturgy 5 and conjuration 4, have your god ritual summon whatever you think could be good, mass a lot of cheap troops, and then try to take a fight with lots of troops, and lots of mystics and some astrologers.

Some other poster suggested greatsword of sharpness thugs, but your mounted commanders are rather fragile against giants and can easily get killed randomly in a battle. It's something you can try, but with soul slay at thaumaturgy 5, especially if the enemy pretender is in your dominion and gets reduced MR and you have a good and large communion with power of the spheres and light of the northern star, I doubt it will be necessary. The main danger I see is the mages dying from arrow fire or communion slaves dying from fatigue, or you running out of chaff or them running due to morale. Use strategos to lead, maybe cast a protective buff or two after communion up, and have significantly more slaves than masters. Maybe try a ratio of 1:6 masters to slaves, and have at least 30 astral mages before taking a battle. In later stages of the game, getting army regeneration and relief up is helpful to let your communion slaves survive.

Once you have reached thaumaturgy 5 and conjuration 3, if you have nothing better to do with your pretender, you could forge shaman's staffs and equip them to your communion masters for a tiny boost. You can also consider forging a few protective items for your communion masters, but putting all your mages in the back with a good number of bodyguards against any random flying summons or attack-rear units, might be sufficient.
