Shadowdancer is very powerful and super fun but drops off pretty hard against backstab immune enemies (Not entirely though, they still have a few tricks like maze). On the other hand, Bounty Hunter is solid throughout thanks to traps and special traps being so good. BG2 also has the advantage that Thief HLAs are fantastic. And of course there is Fighter/Thief which is more or less "Base thief but actually excellent and without significant weaknesses" but I presume that doesn't count.

But as strong or stronger than anything else. A personal favorite to be honest. Shadowdancer is good, but mainly it's just really fun. In combat stealth is not only good for backstabs but also makes you pretty safe in most combat and even lets you dodge spells. Bounty Hunter is a pretty rare choice, because the base combat ability of a pure thief is weak, but set special snare is really, really strong since you can throw them in combat. Tossing a maze into a group of enemies and having them trickle out to be slaughtered is powerful.
