Since auto-defense is the most important part of TD right now (it turns income buffs into permanent buffs), it's missing things like fast forward and tower promotion. I didn't play OG AK but afaik it also has a resource management system you interact with to deploy more units as the battle goes on. Right now, the only gameplay portion of TD is the preparation phase and then you just get to watch and need to rewatch it again until you find the puzzle solution.

It's carried by the sheer delivery of lines by the actors. At least they didn't localize the names in Endfield, so hearing Artyom in Japanese always puts a smile on my face. Unlike in ZZZ, where Anton is called Andou in JP.
