So, it turns out I was mistaken. The Japanese VF channel that posts frame data matches was right under my nose this whole time. VirtuaAnalytics actually does uplaoad match videos with inputs and frame data sometimes. Maybe the uploader just thinks it's too much clutter to have that on the screen every match? Because a lot of the videos don't have it. So I was aware of it and that’s when I first saw footage of VF4, but I still had not played it at that point.Many more years passed, circa 2011. I was really into Street Fighter now. I played SF4 a good bit after my fascination with Tatsunoko vs Capcom sparked an interest in more fighting games. This in turn resulted in me researching more fighting games on Wikipedia, of all places. That is where I first saw the old VF5 cover from the initial console release with Eileen and El Blaze fighting while you see Akira’s face in the background. When I first saw that page, for some reason I thought “What is this? I don’t think I’ll ever end up playing something like this, too busy with all these other games I’m interested in like SF4 and KOFXIII.”But then a bit more time passed and something happened. I got my first arcade stick for Christmas 2013.

At this point, I was very much into fighting games and wanted to improve. I had gotten tired of trying to use the PS3 pad, as I found it frustrating to input things with. So I went with an arcade stick since that’s what I saw better players using in tournaments at that time. Of course, this was a pretty expensive thing and I didn’t want to waste it, especially since it was a gift. So I began to play even more than before. Around this time, I had begun testing out games I had never tried before. I download a dump of Arcana Heart 3 from nyaa that ran on embedded Windows, so it just worked on my computer and I liked Kamui a lot around this time for some reason. Additionally, people I knew began suggesting other games to me that I had never played or had much interest in. I generally hadn’t played much in the way of 3d fighting games. I made a Japanese PSN account and downloaded their demo version of Soulcalibur 4 out of curiosity. But that was about it. However, a crucial thing happened after this. But one guy I knew told me about the F2P game Dead or Alive 5 Core Fighters, so I tried that at this time. First I tried Christie since she was free that week, but the next week, Lisa was free and I became very interested in that character. Another guy knew said “Have you ever played Tekken? If not, Revolution is free.” And that’s when I first started playing King. Which resulted in me eventually buying and playing Tekken Tag Tournament 2 a good bit. But then one day, I looked back at a title I heard a lot about in the past and had even watched some videos of and read articles about. Yet had never purchased or played. Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown. There was no demo on PS3 (though I recall a friend telling me there was one on Xbox.) But I didn’t care. I figured I might as well go for it and see what happens. So then, on March 8th, 2014, I bought VF5. I immediately fell for Vanessa and became obsessed with everything about her.

I heavily favored the Offensive Stance at that time, though grew to appreciate Defensive Stance a bit later. I mostly played ranked mode, though I even joined VFDC back then. Didn’t post much, just learned by reading articles. This was around the time I also discovered Acebreaker and read the stuff he said to become better with Vanessa.Eventually, I hit a wall and didn’t really know what I was doing, so I began playing more off and on. So in preparation, I began playing the game again on RPCS3 and even on my PS3. I had never done any kind of formal discord matchmaking for VF up to that point, but I wanted to learn more and did it that way. When VF5US finally did come out, I got way further ahead in rank than I ever did on PS3. I hit another wall around 30th Dan, but I was kind of shocked I even got that far. I want to learn more when I have more time, but it’s a thing I’m a little too busy to focus on much these days.On a side note, I started really playing VF4 around 2022. I was interested in it because Ryan Hart described it as more complex and interesting to play than VF5, which I already found to be a very complex and interesting game. Furthermore, I had seen the Tougeki tournaments for it and really liked what I saw (other than the huge amount of Lau and Kage players in the finals. I don’t dislike those characters, I just thought that was weird with how highly represented those two were.) I had played it on PCSX2, but never really had the chance to play it much with other people. Though when the Flycast emulation improved, I found it to be a really interesting game, too.

Fewer launcher moves than VF5, combos felt a bit shorter, but it had other cool stuff like how throws worked, the stage designs, and the different moves that characters had and actually lost in 4. I think I actually prefer VF5’s throw system, but I did find VF4 to be a really interesting experience as well.Anyway, with VF, I feel like it’s something that’s been with me since I was a young boy in some ways. VF5 in particular has been with me for most of the time I’ve been playing fighting games, seeing as how no matter what other games came and went, it was always there. In the SF4 era, I was playing VF5 and watching Tougeki Super Battle Opera matches. In the SF5 era, I was playing VF5 and watching Toushinsai matches. Even now in the SF6 era, I’m still playing VF and watching Beat Tribe Cup matches. It’s crazy to think about, but I’ve been playing Vanessa since I was 19. Maybe this is why I’m so worried about how VF6 will turn out.

Does anyone have a clip or a link to a video of SNK vs Capcom like the one I remember?God Rugal has this intro where he is holding up Akuma and draining him of the Satsui no Hadou, then tosses him offscreen, and Shin Akuma has this intro where Dictator is standing in his place, then Shin Akuma does Misogi from offscreen and chops him in half. There was a video of a match that had those intros played in that order and it looked kinda funny, but every other video I find doesn't have them both, it either has one or the other. The one I remember is long gone.
