The reason why it looks and feels like Sonic gets stronger as the series progresses is because Chaos is the replacement for quantum mechanics in Sonic's reality.The more Eggman tries to observe and quantify the abilities and powers of Chaos and Sonic (and by extension Shadow) the more Chaos will (seemingly intentionally too) surpass those previous quantities and diagrams.Eggman's obsession with trying to put Sonic in the Schrodinger's box and have it eventually pop out that Sonic is dead is directly causing Sonic to become stronger as Chaos energy refuses to be quantified by a single observer. Sonic's ability to tap into this power is less of his own doing and free will and more to do with Eggman.
