Yvonne is pretty broken, sure, but anons telling you she 'needs' Gilberta are not completely lying for petty reasons. Her succ will make Berta play much better and Bertas buffs are great for any arts character; even Laevatain. All three first banner characters are pretty good. I'd go for Laev, personally, because she still does insane damage and is AoE.

If you lose a sortie, your base gets raided and you enter the defence phase with the 2nd team and towers (literally tower defence). Boss fights might either have 2 floors for sortie and defence or be defence/sortie only. Some encounter nodes might force defence on you. The choose from 3 part might come from the encounters and pathing, kinda like in IS. I wanted to give an analogy that it'd be something like RA in IS, but there's only the "main base is your hp" part from RA. You can also go FTL route and allow player to wander around the map but there being a "timer" in the form of blight tide/aggeloi horde/etc that follows you.
