This my go-to gear with Minsc alongside the Mental Inhibition ring and it's wonderful. Everything is tailor-made on it for a Raging, high STR Barbarian who loves to get in the faces of foes and soften them up for spells from friendly spellcasters. Did I mention you can go down both (double down on INT/WIS/CHA or add STR/DEX/CON debuff) ways there with additional equipment? So you can fine-tune the setup depending on who you're facing? Feels good and feels Minsc, man.

Protection Fighting Style is decent way to use your Reaction, you also have Concentration spells to protect, your signature Aura of Protection only works if you're conscious, so we have plenty of reason to maximize your suitability. None of these requires love as a catalyst, and entangling himself with Tav risks turning their relationship into an emotional crutch that stifles both his growth and agency. How can he separate "this is what I want for myself" and "I owe this to my dear savior" once a Tav who romances him becomes part of the equation - allows him to bite her on a nightly basis, teaches him to trust again, kills his master for him, becomes the one he owes an eternal debt? None of the other romances have this dependency angle to them. Romance enriches their characters without feeling like a burden. Both unromanced Astarion and romanced Astarion have to wrestle with difficult questions at some point, but the former is free to do so without the weight of feeling like he manipulated someone or was manipulated. Unromanced Astarion doesn't have to bat his eyelashes at Tav or start another coy request with "Darling..." He would have nothing to offer. He would have nothing to bargain, plea, or promise. He would have nothing to owe. His independence would be the first step of his liberation. The sister will argue that romance is an important part of his healing process (missionary with him over his grave), and that Tav as a lover helps him confront his trauma, and that it is beautiful and poignant that way. Maybe she's right. Or maybe his trauma is a different matter altogether, and he can only truly start to face it, on his own terms, once he has earned his freedom. That wouldn't work in the context of the video game, because the sister needs her romance just like the other players (it's only fair).

In practice, however, I'm satisfied with my pure Arcane Trickster Astarion. He carries his weight in battle, he allows me to try a different playstyle than I usually run, his spellcasting (mostly through scrolls) opens up interesting party compositions and he makes good use of my magical arrows. All in all there's no "unplayable" class in the game, even the "worst" ones might just feel underwhelming compared to others. If you build and equip your character at least decently you shouldn't hit the wall anywhere unless you play on Honor. If you have a cool Swashbuckler concept in your mind go for it!
