Everything revolved around that aspect, Hoshino sacrificing herself for Yume's legacy, while also trying to think about passing something on to her kouhai even if she was misguided, while the kouhaitachi kept trying to stop her because it was also their duty to keep Hoshino from acting stupid and making the same mistakes again. it was their duty to stop her exactly because of the relationship they had, kouhai to senpai, it had meaning. The story kept reinforcing "Shiroko you will surpass me some day" insuinuiting that it needed to be Shiroko that had to stop her, Shiroko should have been the one to fight her on the train.But instead "lol hina" which kinda broke the theme, since they had to rely on outside help in the end. Hina's inclusion here and why it hurts the theme of the story makes more sense when you're viewing everything in the story through the kouhai senpai lens.

Like it would be "poetic" for Saori to suffer and die at the end of volume 3 because she hurt people, but the entire game is about how you have infinite chances, there's no need to atone like that, we can just start over. People deep down don't like losing or discarding things. They want a story where by the end, everyone is there, and everyone found a new home/meaning. There's a reason people rejoice over Kei being saved, and it isn't just because tsundere, its because she went on a journey to be alive again, with the help of the people that wanted her to live. People wished for her to live. Its the same with other characters, people wish for them to live. Its cheesy but everyone wants the happy ending without loss, and that's what the story is.
