It even shows you where the little things fit into the bigger picture. If you really want the full immersive experience just work your way through that. But doing a bit of some later events to get the free characters is a good idea some of them are really useful like Kroos and gladdia.A good amount of events stand on their own because there are other ones that have strong ties to the main story so you'll want to read those at least.
