The Halo redpill

>Eric Nylund and Joe Staten came up with most of Halo lore that was actually interesting
>Bungie was mad at Eric Nylund for changing Chief’s origins in the book. They originally wanted him to be a Mjolnir Cyborg like the player character in Marathon
>Halo was always intended to be a self-contained passion project
>Halo 2 was the most ambitious Halo game and most of the concepts and ideas from Halo 2 made their way to later games
>Max Hoberman was responsible for everything you like about H2/H3 multiplayer. Xbox Live, matchmaking, playlists, custom games, gametypes, Lockout and Zanzibar
>Halo 3 was mostly just finishing what Bungie started with Halo 2
>Halo 3 ODST was always intended to be a short and sweet expansion pack to Halo 3 that added ODST campaign and Firefight. Don Mattrick wanted it to be a standalone, and Bungie fought to include the Halo 3 multiplayer disc with all maps on disc for LAN parties
>Jaime Griesemer leaving Reach's gameplay to Sage Merrill is what gave us armor abilities, sprint in Halo, reticle bloom
>Halo Reach was the true Alpha to Destiny's gameplay mechanics
>Reach is the most balanced Halo game since CE and had the most content that was ready day-1

>Frank O'Connor inserted Forerunner retcons into Halo 3's terminals behind Bungie's back
>Frank O’Conner was too chuffed to work with Greg Bear. All that nonsense wasn’t even originally written for Halo. It was leftovers from some other project that he used for the Forerunner Saga and establishing the Didact and Librarian
>Bonnie Ross wanted Halo to be Microsoft's Star Wars transmedia franchise and for Halo 4/5 to rely on the Glasslands books as a foundation
>Halo 4 was chasing COD instead of improving on what Jaime Griesemer and Max Hoberman designed in H2/H3
>Brian Reed is responsible for crashing Halo's lore into a ditch. Spartan Ops, Janus Key, Spartan Locke, Halo 5
>Halo 5 had the most balanced and polished gameplay since Halo CE thanks to Tom French

I hate how eric made the idea of a prequel halo game impossible in his canon by stating that only grunts and kiggers had been deployed as ground forces until the battle of reach. They changed the book to imply elites were known about in 2010 lol. Fucking retard can't even do corporate mandated slop correctly.

It makes remarkably little sense to use elites here considering it was BRVTEs that attacked earth on a large scale. 343 are so fucking retarded. And it's a pre-rendered cutscene. It's not like they didn't have BRVTE models available from promotional material. They did a bad job on purpose.

OG XBOX? SOUL

Ed Fries (Xbox)
>Ed was in college in 1984 when the game industry famously melted down. All these game companies went out of business, including the one I worked for. I had to get a real job, so I went to work at Microsoft. They put me on the first version of Excel for Windows. I was the youngest of seven programmers. We had a really difficult task to fight Lotus. Lotus 1-2-3 was the biggest PC software product in the world, and Lotus was the biggest PC software company
>The head of the games group was leaving. They were looking for someone to run it. To me that was perfect. I was super excited about taking that job. I talked to my bosses and they said–multiple VPs called me into their offices. One said I was committing career suicide. Another told me, “Why would you leave Office, one of the most important parts of this company, to go work on something no one cares about?” That’s what they said about the games business in the mid-’90s
>Seamus Blackley, Kevin Bachus, Otto Berkes, and Ted Hase. [The original Xbox instigators] were from the DirectX group, and so of course they wanted to make this thing called the DirectX Box, or Xbox for short. It was very different from what we shipped. It was a Windows PC that was in a box that made it look more like a console, and then pretended to be a console. You would stick a PC game in it and it would quietly install it in the background then it would run. It would behave like putting in a disc to play a game. That was the original proposal
>They proposed something very much like–completely custom hardware, custom software, effectively a PlayStation. We proposed something that was very much like a Windows PC

>The reality was that we were PC developers, PC game developers for the most part, trying to understand the console business. And the console business, you have to remember, was ruled by the Japanese at that time. They’d controlled the console business since the mid-’80s. All the biggest companies were Japanese. The biggest franchises were Japanese. And yet in the PC world, where we came from, there were incredibly exciting things happening with multiplayer games, first-person shooters, that kind of thing
>When we talked to the press, especially the console press, they would say, “Who’s your Mario? Your games look dark and gritty, not bright and colorful like console games.” And what that meant was they didn’t look Japanese.
>For one thing, we had a hard drive. Hard drives don’t get cheaper. They just get bigger. They still cost, at that time, 50 bucks. It’s just how much space you get for that. Worse, we had an Intel part and an Nvidia part. We didn’t own the IP for the CPU or the GPU. There was no way we could integrate those parts together to shrink the machine. So definitely on the hardware side, we were losing money
>Ed Fries is probably one of a handful of people still alive who can program the Atari 2600
>Bungie’s going broke—not an unusual call at the time, since developers and publishers were often going out of business—and they needed to be acquired. Ed Fries suggests buying Bungie and Halo in 2000 because he liked Myth. Bungie considered it a leap of faith because they liked Ed Fries.
>Steve Jobs was mad that Ed Fries bought Bungie, and he had to call him to calm him down, and suggested a Mac port
>Bungie built Halo in 9 months, copy pasted hallways were due to having to make it to the Xbox launch
>Ed Fries insisted on making networked multiplayer—LAN work on Xbox
>>
>>557991309
>Mjolnir Cyborg
Is there any reason that wouldn't have worked with what was written in FoR? I'm assuming it wouldn't mean both IP were in the same setting.

>Halo—it was going to show what the platform could do, what no other platform could do. You can't name anything else that used similar lighting effects (such as the flashlight) with specular highlights and bumpmapping before Halo in 2002
>Microsoft wanted to force Bungie to ship Halo 2 a year before it's ready, and Ed Fries threatened to walk out unless they gave Bungie an extra year
>Max Hoberman helps design Xbox Live and matchmaking lobbies
>Marty "Halo 2 was so successful that we hit our profit cap for the initial deal we had worked out with Microsoft on day one"
>Todd Howard loved Xbox, but didn't know how to translate the controls to controller. tricks to combat 64mb memory on the original Xbox was to reboot the entire console without us noticing
>Doom 3 had co-op campaign, they even went as far as make alternate levels specifically to accommodate a second player
>The Xbox API was similar to DirectX version 8.1, developed jointly between Microsoft and Nvidia
>Nvidia owned the chipset which meant Microsoft couldn't shrink it to reduce the price of the console. They also got a royalty fee when the 360 emulated it
>On the hardware side, everything is coming together. The factory in Mexico is all ramped up, and the one in Hungary is coming up to speed now
>Ed Fries: If they really wanted me to make my business profitable, I’d put out a PlayStation version of Halo and be profitable tomorrow. That would be my response. But they didn’t like to hear that.
>Peter Moore: "The hard drive in every Xbox killed us; we we're still selling it at $199 and the hard drive was like $70," Moore told UK newspaper The Guardian. "That's why we prematurely left the original Xbox, because the more we were selling – there was still great demand – it was killing us, and there was no way to bring the price down... To this day, people still believe we left the Xbox too early, but it was purely for financial purposes."

Peter Moore (Xbox 360)

>When asked about Xbox 2, Moore stated "It is, simply put, an awesome machine."
>"Microsoft was afraid Sony was going to own the living room."
>Peter Moore used Dreamcast as a career stepping stone to go to Microsoft
>ATI made the GPU for the much cheaper GameCube which was just as graphically impressive as the Xbox. So MS went with them and owned the chip design allowing the 360 to cost reduce
>Xbox 360 actually BEAT both AMD and Intel to the punch with creating a heterogenous CPU/GPU combination. "APU". CPU+GPU on a single die. 360, PS3 and Wii didn't use x86 either, they all use some variation of IBM's Power architecture
>Xbox 360 API uses an API similar to DX9, with only few extensions from DX10/11, like texture arrays or hardware tessellation
>Microsoft doubled the Xbox 360's RAM, after Tim Sweeney showcased the difference between Gears of War builds on 256MB and 512MB. Costing Microsoft approximately $1bn
>Xbox 360 gives developers a full 512MB to do with as they will. PlayStation 3 on the other hand divides its internal RAM into two 256MB portions, with one section dedicated entirely to the NVIDIA-derived graphics technology
>Xbox 360 launch - Project Gotham Racing 3, Geometry Wars, Perfect Dark Zero, Condemned
>It's hard to understate the power of Halo during that period, and then of course Gears of War, which became the tip of the spear for the Unreal Engine 3. So you had Halo, you had Gears of War
>Peter Moore wanted Japanese devs to work on Xbox 360. NAMCO, CAPCOM, SEGA, SQUARE-ENIX, FROMSOFTWARE. PS3 being harder to develop for was a major factor

>Kameo had some rough times during development. Originally starting as a GameCube title, it moved to Xbox, then Xbox 360
>Sakaguchi chose to make Blue Dragon and Lost Oddysey because he trusted Xbox 360 Japanese chief Yoshihiro Maruyama
>Halo 3 was aiming to showcase the technical prowess of the Xbox 360. The lighting, shadows and depth of field are immaculate.
>The first CoD game on Xbox was 2004's Call of Duty: Finest Hour, which was a stripped-down side-story version of the power-hungrier series debut on PC in 2003. CoD2, on the other hand, simultaneously launched on PC and Xbox 360
>Quake II included on the bonus disc with Quake 4 was the first 360 game to inherently support 1080p resolution before support for 1080p output was even added to the 360
>Gabe Newell said getting The Orange Box and Left 4 Dead up on the 360 was like a day's worth of work
>Moore credits Ballmer with green-lighting the huge amount of money $1.15bn required to repair the damage the RRoD furore had caused
>E3 2009: Microsoft Announces Games on Demand. Full retail games will be downloadable when the service goes live this August. A feature that SEGA planned with Dreamcast.
>XInput - Xbox 360 Controller API introduced in 2006 that allows you to use Xbox controllers on Windows PC

Don Mattrick (Xbox 360)

>Microsoft felt pressure from the Wii
>Israeli company PrimeSense develop the "next big thing" for video games, incorporating cameras that were capable of mapping a human body in front of them and sensing hand motion
>Microsoft's Alex Kipman, the general manager of hardware incubation, saw the potential in PrimeSense's technology for the Xbox system
>The project was greenlit by late 2008 with work started in 2009
>Marty: In July of 2007 Bungie had finally negotiated our way out of Microsoft. It was supposed to have been simple. We give them Halo 3, and they give us Bungie. It turned out they wanted us to make more Halo so we agreed to make Halo 4 (which became Reach) and we would help with the Peter Jackson Halo game (which became ODST). Don Mattrick came in (replacing Shane Kim) and started playing hardball with Bungie. Then it turned out the top management at MGS decided that the holiday 2009 season had no major titles for Xbox and delayed the release of ODST and also upped the price to $60
>Ensemble Studios started to work on Halo (having been acquired by Microsoft in 2001), first with a Halo MMO, and then Halo Wars. Bungie says Halo Wars was 'whoring out the franchise,'
>Don Mattrick killed Ensemble Studios and its Halo MMO to protect his personal stock bonus
>"Halo: Reach is NOT a Natal title and is being developed expressly with the traditional Xbox 360 controller in mind," Bungie said
>At some point during Reach, Microsoft started building 343 to be the people to take over Halo. Frank O’Connor and Bonnie Ross are hired to create 343 Industries
>Bonnie Ross who wanted Halo to have a Star Wars EU and even stated that "Halo is OUR Star Wars"

>"It was exciting to think about what a single purpose, dedicated entertainment console could be. So we picked that as a path with Xbox One. We wanted a broad device that touched all parts of gaming and entertainment."
>The XBone runs a 1750mhz AMD Octo-core APU specifically designed for it, which is x86_64
>The Xbox One API is similar to DirectX 11.2
>AMD Jaguar (8 cores at 1.75GHz)
>Xbox One was underpowered due to a DDR3/ESRAM memory system with less bandwidth overal than the GDDR5-equipped PS4
>MATTRICK: "Some of the advantages that you get, of having, a box that is designed to use an online state, so, that, uh, to me is the future-proof choice, and I think people, could've arguably gone the other way if we didn't do it and fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity, it's called Xbox 360."
>MATTRICK: "Well, if you have zero access to the internet, that is an offline device, I mean, seriously, when I read the blogs, and thought about who's really the most impacted, there was a person who said 'hey, I'm on a nuclear sub,' and I don't even know what it means to be on a nuclear sub but I've gotta imagine it's not easy to get an internet connection."
>This also revealed Adam Sessler to be the only "journalists" who was fully on board with everything Microsoft was offering
>Xbox One Price $499 in America. PS4 Price $399 in America
>After the horrible launch of the Xbox One in 2013 Don Mattrick left Microsoft to work as a CEO for Zynga
>Studios working with the next-gen Xbox are currently being forced to work with only approved development libraries, while Sony is encouraging coders to get closer to the metal of its box
>Ryse, Dead Rising 3, Quantum Break, State of Decay, and Sunset Overdrive are just part of where Microsoft was MOSTLY pushing third-party
>Halo MCC was broken in so many ways... it was quite literally unplayable, and the worst launch for the franchise by far

Don Mattrick (Xbox One)

>"We had people who we hired who hated Halo because of 'X,'" says O'Connor. "But what that really meant was, 'I feel like this game could be awesome because of 'Y input' that I'm going to bring into it. I want to prove it, and I'm passionate about proving it.' So we ended up with a bunch of people who were genuinely passionate about the product. That is a huge advantage, and that helped in hiring and forming our team."
>"It's during that time you're questioning yourself: 'How is this going to work, will it be as I envision it in my head?" says Holmes. For Halo 4, he says there were a few epiphany moments that helped boost the morale of the team. One of the earlier ones that Holmes recalls was when the team completed a small piece of the Halo experience that he described as a "very traditional" Halo. User research showed that people thought it was a lot of fun, and it showed that the team was capable of making a Halo game that was true to what the series was about
>343 scrapped it, Holmes says, as it was too traditional. But that first build showed the new team that this amalgamation of different studio cultures could work together and achieve a common goal.
>Frankie promised a full, detail explanation on what happened with MCC that he gave FOUR YEARS later and only after being conrtantly reminded of it. He told us that the story for Spartan Ops was planned long, long in advance but then it was revealed that the big conclusion of Requiem being hurled into the sun was something he thought of on the spot then and there. He told us during the backlash from Black Team's deaths in Halo:Escalation that this wasn't something done on a whim or lightly but had been planned as part of the story for a long time. The Halo Escalation Volume 1 commentary from Brian Reed and others says completely otherwise
>Halo 5 tends to hover around 800p-900p, and rarely hits 1080p

>GameCube supports texture compression, has hardware support for a lot of different texture effects (via TEV shaders), has a decently large dedicated texture cache and actually has proper support for mipmaps / trilinear filtering
>Xbox had a high end PC-level GPU coupled with a low-tier Pentium III 733 CPU with a crippled cache. The system has Direct X 8.1, shader model 1.1, vertex shader 1.1 and two Vertex Shader units, while the Geforce 3's only had one

Xbox One is equivalent to a GTX 750 (not Ti...that's the base PS4) and Infinite barely ran on it lol

There was another CE campaign mod that added more NPCs and vehicle encounters, I forget what it was called, but it's a popular one so it shouldn't be hard to find. Some anon posted a webm of the intro to The Silent Cartographer mission, and it starts out with the pelicans getting chased and shot down by a covenant dropship which also gets shot down and then when you land on the beach there's a bunch of NPCs, turrets, Covenant vehicles, and even scorpion tanks rolling through. It looked kino. I gotta try it.
>>
What was that Halo Reach firefight mod with the sort of Spartan Ops-esque intro cutscene of Covies just hanging out on 'Unearthed' and then you drop in an ODST drop pod?

Also, I remember a Brute voice line in that intro sounding like he mentioned "Jiralhanae", which made me really wonder what are they talking about, since it might imply they aren't just speaking gibberish. I couldn't find anything on the Covenant voicelines in Reach

Imagine if we got Bungie's original vision for Halo 2, instead of the rushed version that was released. Would have been insane, considering the version we got was already revolutionary in terms of multiplayer. If only the campaign and graphics matched up to it. The campaign itself is no slouch either, but imagine if we got the full thing that was originally planned from the start. Just pure, untampered/unfiltered Bungie vision.

I can't remember. I just remember being so fascinated by them that I tried to keep them alive. I'm pretty sure I ended up killing them with a fuel rod or rocket launcher, so not sure how much extra health they would have had. Only tried the mod once. Been trying to look for it on the workshop so I can post it here but I can't seem to find it.

It's on a small canyon/cliff map with a dry/desert theme, really high up so if you fall off the narrow ledges you'll die. There's caves and multiple levels to the map too, and some of the interior sections have Covenant themed designs with some mancannon elevators. There's different weapons and AI enemies/allies scattered around the map, think they just kept respawning. There are turrets/vehicles you can use too.

I remember thinking one day about the immense failure that is the 343-era and how all the impressive resumes and technical talent really amounted to nothing without a Halo-focused vision.
Still, not the first series to have a great run and then a lengthy bad streak before starting to get a good installment here and there. Or maybe Halo will just get shelved. We'll see.
>>
>>558112149
>before starting to get a good installment here and there
Halo has not had a good installment since Reach, and I use the term good very loosely.
>>
>>558112328
I agree. I've just seen it happen with far older series and don't think it's impossible for Halo's future, but sometimes the IP practically or officially being shelved has to happen first. If a good Halo launch ever happens again I might be a grizzled ancient already.

True enough. It's part of why I refer to 343-era rather than 343 itself, because the higher-ups above them also proved their resumes and technical talent didn't mean much without the right priorities.

Execs and other senior positions in almost all companies are occupied pretty much entirely by a managerial class. They have no technical expertise in the fields their companies are responsible for, their only marketable skill is management. You don't get programmers in charge of IT companies for example, or engineers running the show in aerospace manufacturing anymore, just fags with business degrees at every single decision making level. It's half the reason the economy is eating shit at the moment.

There's tons of little changes like that, the shots are framed differently and transitions such as the ring on Truth's crown fading into the moon didn't make it.
Also it's very "high budget 2010's" where it's all sleek, lens flares out the ass and everything makes techno noises.
>>
>>558119059
It's just so weird for part of your job to be selling Halo and despite all the people looking at it the end result is selling a product stripped of Halo's elements. For a side-game? Alright, maybe. For your next mainline Chief-centric game? So weird.
>>
>>558121006
That's because they typically read the market as a whole, they see a trend and they think "we need to do that, that's what people want." The idea is to capitalize squarely on the middle of the bell curve. Will it work? Probably not, but that doesn't cross their mind because again, they have no expertise in this field. Doesn't matter to them, they have six figure salaries and just fail sideways in a game of corporate musical chairs, if they lose out? They pop their golden parachute.

On a side note, I expect Phil will soon find himself in a position of equal or higher status either in microsoft or another corp. Maybe a cushy consultancy.
