What makes Canto 5's struggle compelling is Ishmael not allowing herself to be overtaken by Ahab's obsession, accepting her lost friends, and rising above the challenges she faced. Could the Canto itself have been written better? Sure. It's got issues, Ahab could've been more present, but, on paper, it works. Canto 4 and 5 are troubled, but ignoring their issues and examining what the Director was going for, they're both great from a philosophical standpoint. I myself was touched deeply by both, even if I enjoyed 5 significantly more than 4. I can say with sincerity that both Yi Sang and Ishmael changed the nature of my being.
