Modern Sonic was ruined by overfitting every character into a Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy lattice. Most of the cast is a derivative of those 4 characters and most were created specifically to fill an empty "slot" in that lattice. Rouge has filled Knuckles, Tails, Amy for Shadow. Blaze is stuck between two irreconcilable lattices as Sonic-derivative and Silver's Amy. It's irrelevant to even discuss Cream outside of Amy's/ Blaze's Tails. Outside these lattice characters are so ill-defined and dependent on external media to supply meaning and characterization they collapse into blobslop.There is zero chance of good character-driven writing from within this fully integrated spectacle: it's a closed system. Any "good" writing was copying something else to give the appearance of meaning or a fluke from a rando with their own interpretation. The less you know about the franchise and the more you just assume how the characters are supposed to be the better your writing is.
