the current sv1 throwback rotation has 765 cards in rotation (603 if you remove blood) while sv2 before rotation (adding the next set size) will have 586. if they expanded the basic set a bit we'd be comparable with the old game, but losing an entire craft feels pretty bad no matter how you slice it.

Looking at past sets, what determines if an archetype will be viable or not strongly hinges on the strength of golds, silvers and even bronzes. If your archetype is essentially propped up by pack fillers it's not going to work even if the payoff is theoretically good.

Its why sword and rune will never be shit their entire class is built to just slot in new gimmicks with already good cards. Dragon and portal also hit that critical mass in the last set where everything they have is amazing and there is no bad card in their deck.Abyss, haven, and forest are in a perpetually fucked state because they don't have the foundation to work with when they are good its because their power is tied to a few cards being able to carry their deck full of shit ones so they will swing wildly between being top tier and being dogshit
